It is amazing, but after I listened to the whole album for the first time I preferred the writing and music of Lover, You Should’ve Come Over, and Forget Her. Both are crazy sad but you can still rock out to them
I nearly vomit whenever I listen to a homage to Buckley like this. It never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I still remember where I was when I heard he had died. I knew he was missing and I knew it wasn't likely to end well, but I was driving down Whyralla Rd in Lismore, listening to Triple J when Richard Kingsmill came on the radio and announced that his body was found. I had to pull over and compose myself. I was a mess. I went to an event in Melbourne on the 10th anniversary of his death and his mum recorded a message specifically for the event speaking about Jeff, what he was like and his affinity with Australia. It was beautiful and gut wrenching and unforgettable. 26 years on and I still miss him terribly.
I'm surprised Matthew Bellamy (Muse) wasn't listed as one of the people inspired by Jeff Buckley! Matthew didn't think there was a place in rock n roll for his voice until he heard Jeff Buckley. I would say ''Blackout'' or ''New Born'' , they are both amazing songs. When I listen to these songs, especially Blackout, I feel every part of my body in such a unique way nothing compares to. I will never forget the first time I heard him in 1994. I was driving, and they were playing "Last Goodbye" on the radio. I could not believe what I was hearing. I literally pulled the car over and listened to the rest of the song with my jaw dropping and feeling so emotional... and then I immediately stopped at a gas station payphone (yes, a payphone LOL). I called the radio station to find out who they had just played. I immediately went to a nearby record shop and bought the CD ...and for the rest of my drive I was just blown away song after song after song. I felt like I was crying half the time as I listened. I'm new to playing an instrument, and the very first song I taught myself was (his rendition of) Lilac Wine. I miss him and wonder what all of our lives would have been like had he more time. I always feel sorry for any other singer who takes on Hallelujah (including Leonard Cohen!), because he just owns it so completely. Nobody can come close to wringing the beauty and emotion out of that song the way that he does. It’s simply sublime.

I supported Jeff Buckley at a tiny club called Bunjies in London in 1994, so small it had no PA, one of the old 'folk cellars that had been played in by everyone, Dylan, Bowie, Simon, you name 'em. It was a regular spot for me. Jeff had just signed to Sony, no-one had ever heard of him. Can you imagine the privilege of hearing him acoustically, yet still playing fingerstyle his electric? I think it's probably the most incredible gig I ever attended, the most amazing performance I've ever seen. There can have been no more than say 40 people packed in there. It's no cliche to say that it changed my life, made me change the way I thought about playing and presenting my own music, made me question and indeed completely change what myself I was doing...here at last was someone that deserved recognition, that I didn't mind being a support act to. He played everything you've covered plus 'Je Ne Connais Pas Le Fin', and made everything he covered entirely his own creation as much as were his own songs. Thank you for the analysis of his technique which has helped explain to me a little how he could do that.

I was first introduced to his work via a pretty good cover of "So Real" by Kimbra; after which I fell hook, line & sinker obsessed about him and his life & began my own songwriting on the back of it. I had the privilege of seeing Jeff play live at an old venue called Festival Hall in Brisbane Australia (capacity: 4000). It remains one of the most memorable and intimate live shows I’ve ever seen. Jeff engaged with the crowd and even bummed a few cigarettes from a few punters. The sound was perfect. An uplifting, moving and joyful experience

I saw him in a small club just before he died. His girlfriend played violin. He had a rack of pretuned guitars. Then he sang Hallaluyah without any instruments, just his pure voice. We stood a few feet away transfixed. He was a flame burning too fast❤
Lovely video. Jeff's voice could be everything: gentle, haunting, beautiful, angry and quite often wonderfully weird and avant-garde (the WAAAAHH-EEEEEE wails at the end of Grace at 17:00 is a great example of his weird side). What's so sad about his untimely passing is that he could have done anything he wanted artistically. He could have made jazz albums, folk albums or experimental albums that lean more into his world music influences. Who knows, maybe he would have dabbled in harder rock stuff or electronica as well.

An old girlfriend introduced me to Jeff Buckley. I'll never forget listening to the album Grace the first time. It was jaw-droppingly beautiful and unlike anything else I had ever heard.
I was introduced to Jeff Buckley and Grace through a guy I was talking to online. He sent me Grace, and I sat there listening. My heart started to race, my face flushed, and the hair stood up on the back of my neck. The experience was incredibly carnal and visceral.
One of my all time favorite artists, would love to see you delve into Chris Cornell, if you haven't already done so. I'm 60 now and seriously cried and when into mourning when he died. He, Jeff Buckley and Robert Plant would be my top vocalists with the way they emotionally move me, quite often literally to tears. Thank you so much for this

I feel blessed to come from Australia. Where JB was played endlessly onair and had a huge following. I cryed that I was underage and couldn't see him live at the Palace (edit: his death was so profound on my teenagehood that is still "a tear that hangs in my soul forever")
I discovered Jeff's music shortly after he died, and I had a friend from Australia who'd always brag that she got to see him play live there. I was so envious. There isn't a single voice either before or since that hits me anywhere near as emotionally as Jeff Buckley's.
There are parallels between JB’s ‘right music wrong time’ career and that of the English singer songwriter Nick Drake. Both produced unappreciated (at the time) music and died way to young under accident or suicide circumstances. Crucially both JB and ND are now recognised as huge talents ‘out of time’. If you haven’t already done so Elizabeth I’d recommend listening to Nick Drake’s album Five Leaves Left - one of the finest examples of quiet, almost whispered at times , vocal delivery. But those guitar tunings …wow.
Hi, I dont know if you will see this comment, but I was an acquaintance of Jeff Buckley. I knew him from Cafe Sine in the east village I also loved his voice. He was a sweetheart. Really nice to my kids. we used to have breakfast with him at the cafe. magical singer. a tragic story. Weirdly, my father was friends with his father.
Just wrapped up watching this. I'm not ashamed to say that I was brought to tears a couple of times at least throughout watching this video. Jeff Buckley's music is beautiful, amazing and perfect. Whenever I listen to it I'm transported to my younger years and I'm caught reflecting on those days. I loved my younger years far more than my more recent ones so that's likely why I'm so attached to his music and his sound. There isn't another Jeff Buckley and I'd have a hard time accepting one, if somehow someone appeared and perfectly performed as Jeff Buckley once did. Seriously, I'm going to thank you again Elizabeth. I needed this video to be made and to watch it. I'm feeling positive and happy after finishing it. I don't know how to thank you other than to say you're amazing and your attention to detail and music will always be appreciated. I'm very much looking forward to future videos on this channel! As for recommendations - I don't really know. I have one that nobody's familiar with - Toad The Wet Sprocket. I will be shocked if I saw you choose to do a deep dive on them. Another band that I'd down to see a deep dive on would be Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor is someone that I look up to musically. I will NEVER forget the first time I heard him. I was snorkeling on Deerfield Beach, FL. It was late afternoon and I had just come out of the water and was laying on the beach with my walkman ( remember those?) Resting." Last Goodbye" came on the radio. I LITERALLY sat up in awe. I couldn't believe the guy's voice. I'm not exaggerating when I say that as soon as the song was over, I drove right over the a local record and bought GRACE. I was 28 then. I'm now 56 and that album never leaves me. It's one of those albums that is generational. It's has a soul...and it's pretty amazing. I have a co worker who was 26 at the time and we were talking music. I told about Jeff Buckley and how incredible and influential he was. She said she'd never heard of him. I put on Last Goodbye. It was an amazing thing to watch her face go from ambivalence...to awe....to tears while she listened and read the lyrics. I thought to myself... " I know exactly what you're feeling, I felt the EXACT same thing 29 years ago..".😊

I have no idea why it took me so long to watch this video, and now I feel especially stupid for having done so. I had zero familiarity with Jeff Buckley before and was certainly unaware of his tragic death. While I do not think that Jell's music would be my cup of tea (pardon the expression), this video kept me interested all the way through, and I certainly have gained a great deal of respect for the man's musical talent. I absolutely love the slick, professional presentation of this channel. I love how even though we do not get to see Elizabeth's signature facial expressions, you can hear her smile and her enthusiasm in her voice. I love how the channel combines science, emotion, and humor seamlessly. I'm a Charismatic Voice fanboy, so take this as you will, but I really believe that, given a bit of time, The Singing Hole will become one of the premier vocal education channels (or education channels, period) on TH-cam. Keep up the good work guys.

I’d love to see one on Shannon Hoon and hear you do some Blind Melon. Not the most amazing vocally, but an incredible song writer in the higher range.

Wonderful analysis! “Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley” is another fantastic book that parallels Jeff and his father’s lives and early deaths. I know you done a reaction to Eva Cassidy, but I’d love to see a Singing Hole breakdown of her as well. Particularly her cover of Songbird now that Christine McVie has also passed on.

You simply must check out Jeff Buckley and Elizabeth Fraser sing “All Flowers In Time Bend Towards The Sun”. It’s absolutely beautiful. Elizabeth Fraser sings for Cocteau Twins which she’s a powerhouse in her own right. But they had an intense relationship for a year and wrote this song together and truly it is beautiful! ❤

You did a really good job with this video showcasing his amazing talent. It is a real shame that we never got to see where things could have gone if he wasn't taken from us. The fact he did receive a lot of postumous recognition made me think of another immense talent that never got to fully share he incredilble talent with the world. Eva Cassidy from Washington never seemed to grow beyond her local area scene and until she died she was very much a lost treasure. Her story and death is extremely said as it was from such a seemingly rare cause of death (melanoma). But after her death the recordings of this exceptional vocalist began to reach the world and I am very glad they reached the UK where she sold very well. Her live cover of Over The Rainbow being aired on Tops Of The Pops was an extremely heart warming moment given it was sitting alongside all of the usual pop radio hits of that week. I just don't know if The Charasmatic Voice Universe are aware of the name but her music and her story are worth the trouble to look. You have given so much with many great recommendations, highlighting many superb vocalists this is me hopefully sending one back to you.
I was so lucky to see him twice here in Australia, such amazing shows. Lover, You Should've Come Over, and What Will You Say were both standouts live. His ability to silence a crowd, and then bring them to their feet, was truly breathtaking to behold.

Jeff was heavily influenced by 'Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,' and even covered 'Sahib Teri Bandi' live - You can hear Jeff summoning Nusrat's vocal droning style in a lot of his vocals. Eddie Vedder/PearlJam were also fans of Nusrat and worked together on 'The Long Road.' Can only imagine what those three could have done had they jammed together.
This was such a delight to stumble upon!! Jeff Buckley is a highly underrated artist, so it's wonderful to see him getting the appreciation he richly deserves. It's funny; Jeff's biggest impact upon me came not through his own music originally, but through his father's. Tim Buckley is one of my all-time favorite vocalists, and it's kind of amazing how similar, vocally, he and Jeff are. Many of Jeff's talents that he honed so carefully (his ridiculous range, his breath control, his ability to play with vibrato and bend notes) were things that Tim also possessed, but it much rawer form, as Tim never had any formal training. It's a shame that father and son alike lost their lives so early (really, their lives have some very eerie parallels), because both were extraordinarily innovative and fearless artists who had so much talent to work with. If you want to hear something really interesting, listen to Tim Buckley's song "I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain" (a song he wrote about Mary and, to lesser extent, Jeff), and then listen to Jeff cover that same song at a tribute concert to Tim at- I believe- St. Anne's Church in NYC in 1999. Tim performed a crazy vocal ascent at the end of that song that Jeff mirrors flawlessly. The similarity in their vocals is haunting, but it's also fascinating to discern the individualities in them as well.
I too am a huge Tim Buckley fan. Saw him twice: once at Max’s Kansas City when I was 17 and again a couple years later in Central Park (Shaeffer concerts). I was fortunate to live in the hood where St Ann’s is, plus I knew a few musicians who performed at the Tim Buckley memorial. Jeffrey Scott blew us away but it was also so eerie. I got to meet him and his mom briefly afterward backstage while waiting to go to dinner with a performer. He was sweet and shy. I started to go to his shows. At the beginning he took care of his mailing list and I still have dozens of announcements saved. A handed written holiday wish is one of my favorites. I also have the program from St. Anne’s . I saw him a good 20 times including Siné and CBGB’s. He played for 2 weeks downstairs at Fez and we got to chat over a beer several times. There were very few people who stayed after his performances. He also played at St Anne’s and was selling t-shirts he designed. I could only afford one and gave it to a friend (we met because of our love for Tim.). I regret not getting one for myself. I was at Siné when lots of promo people were there, people who were about to work with him. The place is the size of a bathroom, there were about a dozen chairs and no stage. I was lucky to sit and noticed after awhile that Marianne Faithfull was standing pressed against me (I’m a huge fan). We had a chat afterward but she was inebriated. She was looking forward to working with him. It’s mind boggling to me that most of the times I went to see Jeff, I went alone because I couldn’t talk friends into coming with me. The ones who did knew the genius they had just witnessed. Jeff liked to tell stories and jokes. He was very funny. And he often would play a few Led Zep chords. What a tragedy when he decided to take a walk in a river. My favorite Tim Buckley song is Buzzing Fly. But the Greetings From LA album got the most play.

All too often, we lose them too soon.

This was awesome. I'd love if you could do Kevin Gilbert, such an incredible vocalist and musician. He died at a rather young age too and I believe he was rumored to have been the potential replacement for Phil Collins in Genesis. He also co-wrote Sheryl Crow's debut album. An album of his was released posthumously called "The Shaming of the True", which was a progressive rock album about the vapid and cruel nature of the music industry

I love documentaries about musical artists, and this was no exception. Give me more of this! I will eat it up! Steve Hogarth of Marillion would be a great subject. He's still going strong adfter 33 years with the band. He is what I call a "method singer". He becomes the protagonist of the songs. Amongst many others he does tragedy (Brave), humour (The Uninvited Guest), unbridled passionate love (You're Gone). He shares the human experience so generously. And he's best live where you can see and hear how the audience gives him that extra level.
@@thesinginghole Preferably early Marillion, when Fish was the lead singer. Or his subsequent solo album "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors". Marillion without Fish is like Pink Floyd without Roger Waters. They're still good, but they're not the real deal. Oh, and speaking of Roger Waters. You should definitely listen to his 1992 masterpiece "Amused to Death". I find the title track and "It's a Miracle" to be the best songs, but since the album is a concept album, it should be listened to in its entirety. You won't regret this. One last thing: Three Danish charismatic voices to listen to: Henriette Sennenvaldt from "Under Byen", f.x. in the song "Legesag" (Plaything). Anisette Koppel from Savage rose in f.x. "Black Angel". Savage Rose declined a huge American contract in their earlier years in the 1970. They could easily have become the next super band. And finally Allan Vegenfeldt from The Sandmen. His voice on "House in the Country" will flay your soul. Have fun y'all.
The end of Hallelujah is one of the most haunting and beautiful moments I've ever heard, musically. It is one of my favorite songs of all time. I go back to it often and it never fails to delight and astound me. And the end still haunts me.

So much emotion; pleading, ecstasy, and longing when Buckley sings, "Kiss me, please kiss me," in Last Goodbye. It's almost overwhelming.

I would say ''Blackout'' or ''New Born'' , they are both amazing songs. When I listen to these songs, especially Blackout, I feel every part of my body in such a unique way nothing compares to. You should give it a listen!

I will never forget the first time I heard him in 1994. I was driving, and they were playing "Last Goodbye" on the radio. I could not believe what I was hearing. I literally pulled the car over and listened to the rest of the song with my jaw dropping and feeling so emotional... and then I immediately stopped at a gas station payphone (yes, a payphone LOL). I called the radio station to find out who they had just played. I immediately went to a nearby record shop and bought the CD ...and for the rest of my drive I was just blown away song after song after song. I felt like I was crying half the time as I listened. I'm new to playing an instrument, and the very first song I taught myself was (his rendition of) Lilac Wine. I miss him and wonder what all of our lives would have been like had he more time. Thank you for your breakdown of his vocals!
I always feel sorry for any other singer who takes on Hallelujah (including Leonard Cohen!), because he just owns it so completely. Nobody can come close to wringing the beauty and emotion out of that song the way that he does. It’s simply sublime.

I supported Jeff Buckley at a tiny club called Bunjies in London in 1994, so small it had no PA, one of the old 'folk cellars that had been played in by everyone, Dylan, Bowie, Simon, you name 'em. It was a regular spot for me. Jeff had just signed to Sony, no-one had ever heard of him. Can you imagine the privilege of hearing him acoustically, yet still playing fingerstyle his electric? I think it's probably the most incredible gig I ever attended, the most amazing performance I've ever seen. There can have been no more than say 40 people packed in there. It's no cliche to say that it changed my life, made me change the way I thought about playing and presenting my own music, made me question and indeed completely change what myself I was doing...here at last was someone that deserved recognition, that I didn't mind being a support act to. He played everything you've covered plus 'Je Ne Connais Pas Le Fin', and made everything he covered entirely his own creation as much as were his own songs. Thank you for the analysis of his technique which has helped explain to me a little how he could do that.

I was first introduced to his work via a pretty good cover of "So Real" by Kimbra; after which I fell hook, line & sinker obsessed about him and his life & began my own songwriting on the back of it. I had the privilege of seeing Jeff play live at an old venue called Festival Hall in Brisbane Australia (capacity: 4000). It remains one of the most memorable and intimate live shows I’ve ever seen. Jeff engaged with the crowd and even bummed a few cigarettes from a few punters. The sound was perfect. An uplifting, moving and joyful experience

jeff had one of the most soulful, expressive voices and moves my soul more than any ive ever heard. i remember watching his live in nyc show when i was in high school and ive been hooked ever since!
I saw him in a small club just before he died. His girlfriend played violin. He had a rack of pretuned guitars. Then he sang Hallaluyah without any instruments, just his pure voice. We stood a few feet away transfixed. He was a flame burning too fast❤
Lovely video. Jeff's voice could be everything: gentle, haunting, beautiful, angry and quite often wonderfully weird and avant-garde (the WAAAAHH-EEEEEE wails at the end of Grace at 17:00 is a great example of his weird side).
What's so sad about his untimely passing is that he could have done anything he wanted artistically. He could have made jazz albums, folk albums or experimental albums that lean more into his world music influences. Who knows, maybe he would have dabbled in harder rock stuff or electronica as well.

An old girlfriend introduced me to Jeff Buckley. I'll never forget listening to the album Grace the first time. It was jaw-droppingly beautiful and unlike anything else I had ever heard.
I will never forget buying Grace around 1998. Popped it in and did not stop listening, was in my driveway until the end, never leaving my car.
I was introduced to Jeff Buckley and Grace through a guy I was talking to online. He sent me Grace, and I sat there listening. My heart started to race, my face flushed, and the hair stood up on the back of my neck. The experience was incredibly carnal and visceral.
One of my all time favorite artists, would love to see you delve into Chris Cornell, if you haven't already done so. I'm 60 now and seriously cried and when into mourning when he died. He, Jeff Buckley and Robert Plant would be my top vocalists with the way they emotionally move me, quite often literally to tears. Thank you so much for this

I discovered Jeff's music shortly after he died, and I had a friend from Australia who'd always brag that she got to see him play live there. I was so envious. There isn't a single voice either before or since that hits me anywhere near as emotionally as Jeff Buckley's.
There are parallels between JB’s ‘right music wrong time’ career and that of the English singer songwriter Nick Drake. Both produced unappreciated (at the time) music and died way to young under accident or suicide circumstances. Crucially both JB and ND are now recognised as huge talents ‘out of time’. If you haven’t already done so Elizabeth I’d recommend listening to Nick Drake’s album Five Leaves Left - one of the finest examples of quiet, almost whispered at times , vocal delivery. But those guitar tunings …wow.

Hi, I dont know if you will see this comment, but I was an acquaintance of Jeff Buckley. I knew him from Cafe Sine in the east village I also loved his voice. He was a sweetheart. Really nice to my kids. we used to have breakfast with him at the cafe. magical singer. a tragic story. Weirdly, my father was friends with his father.
Just wrapped up watching this. I'm not ashamed to say that I was brought to tears a couple of times at least throughout watching this video. Jeff Buckley's music is beautiful, amazing and perfect. Whenever I listen to it I'm transported to my younger years and I'm caught reflecting on those days. I loved my younger years far more than my more recent ones so that's likely why I'm so attached to his music and his sound. There isn't another Jeff Buckley and I'd have a hard time accepting one, if somehow someone appeared and perfectly performed as Jeff Buckley once did.
Seriously, I'm going to thank you again Elizabeth. I needed this video to be made and to watch it. I'm feeling positive and happy after finishing it. I don't know how to thank you other than to say you're amazing and your attention to detail and music will always be appreciated. I'm very much looking forward to future videos on this channel! As for recommendations - I don't really know. I have one that nobody's familiar with - Toad The Wet Sprocket. I will be shocked if I saw you choose to do a deep dive on them. Another band that I'd down to see a deep dive on would be Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor is someone that I look up to musically. He's very talented with what he does and has done for a good long while.

I will NEVER forget the first time I heard him. I was snorkeling on Deerfield Beach, FL. It was late afternoon and I had just come out of the water and was laying on the beach with my walkman ( remember those?) Resting." Last Goodbye" came on the radio. I LITERALLY sat up in awe. I couldn't believe the guy's voice. I'm not exaggerating when I say that as soon as the song was over, I drove right over the a local record and bought GRACE. I was 28 then. I'm now 56 and that album never leaves me. It's one of those albums that is generational. It's has a soul...and it's pretty amazing.
I have a co worker who was 26 at the time and we were talking music. I told about Jeff Buckley and how incredible and influential he was. She said she'd never heard of him. I put on Last Goodbye. It was an amazing thing to watch her face go from ambivalence...to awe....to tears while she listened and read the lyrics. I thought to myself... " I know exactly what you're feeling, I felt the EXACT same thing 29 years ago..".😊

I’ve played it so many times since I purchased it in 94, transports me to my life at that time. Grunge was in full force and this album was like no other, and his voice haunting and ethereal. I have no idea why it took me so long to watch this video, and now I feel especially stupid for having done so. I had zero familiarity with Jeff Buckley before and was certainly unaware of his tragic death. While I do not think that Jell's music would be my cup of tea (pardon the expression), this video kept me interested all the way through, and I certainly have gained a great deal of respect for the man's musical talent.
I absolutely love the slick, professional presentation of this channel. I love how even though we do not get to see Elizabeth's signature facial expressions, you can hear her smile and her enthusiasm in her voice. I love how the channel combines science, emotion, and humor seamlessly. I'm a Charismatic Voice fanboy, so take this as you will, but I really believe that, given a bit of time, The Singing Hole will become one of the premier vocal education channels (or education channels, period) on TH-cam. Keep up the good work guys.

This was incredible, great job. Grace will always be one of my favs and Jeff left us way too soon. Even my wife enjoyed and she’s not a huge Buckley fan. I’d love to see one on Shannon Hoon and hear you do some Blind Melon. Not the most amazing vocally, but an incredible song writer in the higher range.
Jeff Buckley is one of my all time faves! Wonderful analysis! “Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley” is another fantastic book that parallels Jeff and his father’s lives and early deaths.

You did a really good job with this video showcasing his amazing talent. It is a real shame that we never got to see where things could have gone if he wasn't taken from us. The fact he did receive a lot of postumous recognition made me think of another immense talent that never got to fully share he incredilble talent with the world. Eva Cassidy from Washington never seemed to grow beyond her local area scene and until she died she was very much a lost treasure. Her story and death is extremely said as it was from such a seemingly rare cause of death (melanoma). But after her death the recordings of this exceptional vocalist began to reach the world and I am very glad they reached the UK where she sold very well. Her live cover of Over The Rainbow being aired on Tops Of The Pops was an extremely heart warming moment given it was sitting alongside all of the usual pop radio hits of that week. I just don't know if The Charasmatic Voice Universe are aware of the name but her music and her story are worth the trouble to look. You have given so much with many great recommendations, highlighting many superb vocalists this is me hopefully sending one back to you.
Eva was something special. Autumn Leaves, I Know You By Heart... absolute gut-punches. A lost treasure indeed

I was so lucky to see him twice here in Australia, such amazing shows. Lover, You Should've Come Over, and What Will You Say were both standouts live. His ability to silence a crowd, and then bring them to their feet, was truly breathtaking to behold.
Jeff Buckley’s loss at such a young age is so tragic and frustrating, he could have matured into such a true music great. Creativity is a cruel and demanding muse! Jeff was heavily influenced by 'Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,' and even covered 'Sahib Teri Bandi' live - You can hear Jeff summoning Nusrat's vocal droning style in a lot of his vocals. Eddie Vedder/PearlJam were also fans of Nusrat and worked together on 'The Long Road.' Can only imagine what those three could have done had they jammed together.
All these years later I’m still regularly sad that we’ll never have more from him.

This was such a delight to stumble upon!! Jeff Buckley is a highly underrated artist, so it's wonderful to see him getting the appreciation he richly deserves. It's funny; Jeff's biggest impact upon me came not through his own music originally, but through his father's. Tim Buckley is one of my all-time favorite vocalists, and it's kind of amazing how similar, vocally, he and Jeff are. Many of Jeff's talents that he honed so carefully (his ridiculous range, his breath control, his ability to play with vibrato and bend notes) were things that Tim also possessed, but it much rawer form, as Tim never had any formal training. It's a shame that father and son alike lost their lives so early (really, their lives have some very eerie parallels), because both were extraordinarily innovative and fearless artists who had so much talent to work with.
If you want to hear something really interesting, listen to Tim Buckley's song "I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain" (a song he wrote about Mary and, to lesser extent, Jeff), and then listen to Jeff cover that same song at a tribute concert to Tim at- I believe- St. Anne's Church in NYC in 1999. Tim performed a crazy vocal ascent at the end of that song that Jeff mirrors flawlessly. The similarity in their vocals is haunting, but it's also fascinating to discern the individualities in them as well.
I too am a huge Tim Buckley fan. Saw him twice: once at Max’s Kansas City when I was 17 and again a couple years later in Central Park (Shaeffer concerts). I was fortunate to live in the hood where St Ann’s is, plus I knew a few musicians who performed at the Tim Buckley memorial. Jeffrey Scott blew us away but it was also so eerie. I got to meet him and his mom briefly afterward backstage while waiting to go to dinner with a performer. He was sweet and shy. I started to go to his shows. At the beginning he took care of his mailing list and I still have dozens of announcements saved. A handed written holiday wish is one of my favorites. I also have the program from St. Anne’s . I saw him a good 20 times including Siné and CBGB’s. He played for 2 weeks downstairs at Fez and we got to chat over a beer several times. There were very few people who stayed after his performances. He also played at St Anne’s and was selling t-shirts he designed. I could only afford one and gave it to a friend (we met because of our love for Tim.). I regret not getting one for myself.
I was at Siné when lots of promo people were there, people who were about to work with him. The place is the size of a bathroom, there were about a dozen chairs and no stage. I was lucky to sit and noticed after awhile that Marianne Faithfull was standing pressed against me (I’m a huge fan). We had a chat afterward but she was inebriated. She was looking forward to working with him.
It’s mind boggling to me that most of the times I went to see Jeff, I went alone because I couldn’t talk friends into coming with me. The ones who did knew the genius they had just witnessed.
Jeff liked to tell stories and jokes. He was very funny. And he often would play a few Led Zep chords.
What a tragedy when he decided to take a walk in a river.
My favorite Tim Buckley song is Buzzing Fly. But the Greetings From LA album got the most play.

He died at a rather young age too and I believe he was rumored to have been the potential replacement for Phil Collins in Genesis. He also co-wrote Sheryl Crow's debut album. An album of his was released posthumously called "The Shaming of the True", which was a progressive rock album about the vapid and cruel nature of the music industry

I love documentaries about musical artists, and this was no exception. Give me more of this! I will eat it up! Steve Hogarth of Marillion would be a great subject. He's still going strong adfter 33 years with the band. He is what I call a "method singer". He becomes the protagonist of the songs. Amongst many others he does tragedy (Brave), humour (The Uninvited Guest), unbridled passionate love (You're Gone). He shares the human experience so generously. And he's best live where you can see and hear how the audience gives him that extra level.

@@thesinginghole Preferably early Marillion, when Fish was the lead singer. Or his subsequent solo album "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors".
Marillion without Fish is like Pink Floyd without Roger Waters. They're still good, but they're not the real deal.
Oh, and speaking of Roger Waters. You should definitely listen to his 1992 masterpiece "Amused to Death". I find the title track and "It's a Miracle" to be the best songs, but since the album is a concept album, it should be listened to in its entirety. You won't regret this.
One last thing: Three Danish charismatic voices to listen to:
Henriette Sennenvaldt from "Under Byen", f.x. in the song "Legesag" (Plaything).
Anisette Koppel from Savage rose in f.x. "Black Angel". Savage Rose declined a huge American contract in their earlier years in the 1970. They could easily have become the next super band.
And finally Allan Vegenfeldt from The Sandmen. His voice on "House in the Country" will flay your soul.

The end of Hallelujah is one of the most haunting and beautiful moments I've ever heard, musically. It is one of my favorite songs of all time. I go back to it often and it never fails to delight and astound me.
And the end still haunts me.
