    Dang. I gotta say I was skeptical given all the “cheap” routes you took…but colored me RGB’d, the final effect was impressive. I may use this for my theater. Well done and thanks for sharing.

      Well considering that even in the professional scene condoms are used as temporary replacement diffusers on huge displays it not a stretch that you can get a nice light setup on the cheap.
      Edit: speaking from experience, worked on a display for the Grammies during college. All the broken diffusers were replaced with condoms.

    Like others have mentioned, this was definitely "budget", and I was skeptical too when I saw that paper going in as a diffuser as too how good it would actually look, but oh my. This turned out way better than I was expecting

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol yeah I wasn't sure how the paper was going to look either but it looks great! Could certainly use some acrylic but its a little more expensive and unless you have a big piece, you might see little gaps at the seams! Thanks so much for watching!

    That looks incredibly for the materials you've used! to think how much cheaper paper is than acrylic to still get that finish! Awesome Stuff Chris!

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yeah much cheaper than acrylic. I wish i could find acrylic that is one solid piece but i think i would have to have a plastic manufacturing plant nearby otherwise it would be astronomically expensive. I'm just glad the paper worked great! Thanks so much for watching!

    I use WLED for every led thing I make. I’ve bought close to 30 esp devices for projects for myself and other people, even made a control panel with a power button, brightness control, and preset selector knob that works amazingly well. Also fairyreef is my favorite palette.

    What amazed me the most was the blue paint tape that you used just to stick things on the wall!!!! I had to rewatch it again because i didnt catch that the first time around. But even that roll up you did to manage the cables made me laugh. You really got it figured out here and the results were very impressive!😮 A job well done! I think im a have to use your roll up idea to manage my cables too haha thank you for this video!

    Very nice. I did a very similar build but used a couple diffused fluorescent light covers cut into strips to diffuse the light. I also had the corner problem and just made 3/4" squares instead of a triangle.

    You should invest in a set of feather boards for your table saw. They keep the piece of material that you are cutting pressed against the fence.

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ugh, I totally forgot that I got a feather board a couple months ago! I can't believe I forgot about it. That definitely would have made it easier and probably a little safer as well. Good call!

  • @jonduke4472
    @jonduke4472 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd call the second operation(second and third cuts) Rabbeting.
    Granted you're not using that connect to anything but I think it's still the term.
    LEDs don't like making turns in that direction. The little clips you used or soldering is nearly required.
    I like that paper idea for diffusion. Something I haven't nailed yet for my projects.
    Looks great!

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Little pro tip:
    Don't cut 45s on your inside corners. A cleaner and better fit is to run all the way into the corner on one. For the piece that will now butt up to that, cut it just a hair longer than you need. Then start on the free end and work toward the corner. You'll have to tap the end into the corner. After that, a tiny bit of wood putty across the top and inside edge and you'll have what appears to be a seamless connection.
    The reason for this is that getting walls perfectly perpendicular to each other and getting two perfect 45s is a lot less likely than simple square cuts.

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. That's a great tip and as you can probably tell, I don't know much about woodworking so I appreciate all the advice I can get! Thanks!!

      No worries. Everyone starts somewhere. Also, if you have normal trim, you'll need a coping saw for my trick to work.
      Lastly, and I forgot to say in my OP, really cool light setup. Provides just enough ambient light for pauses during movies.

    Well, all in here makes sense to me. :) We use paper for making lanterns after all! If you want to still go the cheap route but make it a little more resistant, try different fabrics instead of papers. You can explore patterns and textures, see what you like the most. Very nice budget build for an awesome effect. Will be saving this.

    Nice idea. Another thing to help diffuse the light would be to angle your cut on which you mount your LEDs away from the diffuser. Say 45 degrees or so, that way you have no way of seeing the direct LED and the light is diffused off of the back wall in addition to you acrylic, paper, or whatever diffuser you use.
    BTW, are you syncing all of your lights with just WLED and running it on its effects?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching and love the way your thinking! That is definitely a great idea and I know exactly what you mean. And you are correct. I think I have 4 esp8266 boards controlling all the light projects you see and since they are all on the same wifi network I can control them all at once. All the animations are just some sort of variations of the preset ones on WLED. Thanks again and thanks for taking the time to comment!

    Pine is very prone to warping under normal conditions. Paint only one side and you've made it worse. The acrylic would have helped a _little_ , but paper is basically a moisture wick. Add in the heat, minor as it is, from the LEDs, and I'd be very surprised if that thin section doesn't curl up and/or crack on you.. probably by now, since it's three months later. Paint both sides of the wood (yes, even though it won't be seen) to seal it. Sealing any end grain will help too. Wood glue works great for this - end grain will soak up a LOT of paint. If it'll be seen, sand the end grain well, then coat it with wood glue and give it a few minutes to soak in. Wipe or scrape off any excess and let the glue dry. Now you can sand lightly and paint it. The glue will help fill some of those deep pits that pine sometimes has when you cut across the grain. If you want it perfectly flat, use wood filler, but do the glue trick first. Most wood fillers are water based these days, and water + end grain... nope.
