Goodbye Mr Phillips, and thank you. Thank you for all the delicious laughs. Thank you for being a lovely joyful part of entertainment history. Thank you for all your hard work to bring some fun into our lives. Above all, thank you. Sleep well.
I've never thought of it before, but Leslie and Charles Hawtrey both have 'hello', as a catch phrase. Every time Charles appears, I always say, "Oh, hello" along with him.
Know him best from "The navy Lark" Between 1959 and 1977, Phillips became familiar on radio, as Sub-Lieutenant Phillips in the comedy The Navy Lark alongside Jon Pertwee and Ronnie Barker.[19] He also appeared in the film version of The Navy Lark (1959), the only cast member of the radio series to do so.[20] source Wikipedia
A screen legend and an icon. He would never really get away with half of what he said back then, in this century or the way he said it. Sad news to hear of his death today. Tuesday 8th November 2022. RIP Leslie Phillips.
Back when a pretty nurse wasn't offended by his reaction to her but took it as a compliment and maintained control of the situation. And yes, she certainly was pretty!
One of my Aunts was in some West End production with Phillips in the 50s. She lived with her widowed twin sister in the country. Id visit them twice a month and every time I would weave Phillips into the conversation and every time I would get the same West End story. Her sister was in on the joke but she never sussed it out. She would take the bait every time. Once a luvvie always a luvvie. Same with the Kenneth Williams dropping his pants in front of the tea lady story which is now all over the internet.
0:04-0:14 Doctor in Clover with the beautiful Suzan Farmer, Fenella Fielding, Jeremy Lloyd of Laugh-In fame, Noel Purcell, Joan Sims and so many other familiar faces....some criticize it for starting to dip into the Swinging Sixties motifs, Carnaby Street etc., and sights like James Robertson Justice dancing in a kilt, but Leslie Phillips never fails to raise a smile and it's all in good fun....
@@Alwaysred100 Of the main recognized ones yes, but interestingly there are others still living who appeared in more Carry On Movies than Leslie. One of those is Valerie Leon, who actually appeared in 6. My favourite with Leslie Phillips in is Carry On Teacher.
Still a few others left who did more than three or four, Valerie Leon did Six and is regarded as a Regular. Though you're right about the most recognizable members. Leslie actually did 4 but he made such an impact in those early ones that he will always be associated with the Carry On movies...Ding Dong, Legend.
He reminds me a bit of 1930s-1940s American actor William Powell with his witty quips and clever jibes. The gorgeous and classy dames quite obviously considered Powell to be a suave and debonair chap, judging from their poise and demeanor of sort they dream about. The characters were often too perfect, almost as if they had written the stories beforehand.😉
In one of his quotes in carry on constable, he's asked what the quickest way to Waverley square is, Leslie says, I don't know I'm a stranger here myself, oh charlie why don't you laugh sometimes, if only you know the worlds most powerful force is the sparkle from a popsies eyes unique and so funny god bless you
RIP Leslie, you were a comedy legend that gave many people a lot of happiness - That's a life well lived in my book.
Love watching the old films with the likes of Leslie, Terry Thomas, Ian Carmichael. Sheer class.
Although Leslie was not in the film, School for Scoundrels is a classic English comedy!
Leslie should have been a Knight of the Realm, bless him.
I miss those times

I've never thought of it before, but Leslie and Charles Hawtrey both have 'hello', as a catch phrase. Every time Charles appears, I always say, "Oh, hello" along with him.

Great Actor is Leslie Phillips. They really don't make them like him anymore. Todays Actors are collectively banal.
Always a charmer.
Superb.
RIP Leslie Phillips 1924-2022😢
Rest in peace Leslie Philips
Happy Birthday Leslie 🍾
My favourite film of his is 'Don't Just Lie There, Say Something' (1973). An absolutely hilarious bedroom farce with Brian Rix & Joanna Lumley.
Leslie Phillips and Terry Thomas the two quintessential English cads
Legend!
Happy Birthday to you Sir! hope it's a wonderful day for you full of treats....
Back when a pretty nurse wasn't offended by his reaction to her but took it as a compliment and maintained control of the situation.

Good Lord that nurse is beautiful. I involuntary said out loud, "damn she's bad". Haha

Extraordinary how life has changed. Imagine him doing this these days. The world is a lot nastier now.
Good old chap!!
Catch his cameo in the film "Millions" worth the watch.

As of late August 2019 Leslie Phillips is still alive at the age of 95.
