Everyone, and I mean everyone, wanted to play with Roy Orbison. Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Ron Tutt, James Burton and a few others, Billy Idol was watching from the crowd. An amazing event.

One day Roy was sitting at home talking to a friend, when his wife came up and said she was going to the store, Roy Asked her " do you need any money?" The other guy said " a pretty woman don't need no money!" They looked at each other and thought that was a great title. So Roy thought about what he would be thinking if he saw her walking down the street! And the rest is history.

When Orbison did his hour-long show on Austin City Limits, he showed off "Crying" early in the set, just to show everyone he could still nail the high notes--with a smile on his face.

It warms an old man's heart to see a young lady involuntarily move to the rythm of one of the finest voices of Rock'n Roll. You should listen to the original to have a fuller appreciation of his talent.
P.S. the song came before the movie, which, is one of many retellings of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion.

Sarah, as usual your enthusiasm is infectuos. This concert is a bit of a legend. Events like these are rare. This cast in one setting is amazing. I don't know that anyone got paid for their guest appearances. I think this was all about paying their collective respect to the legend that influenced all of them. Here's the cast. Roy Orbison: lead vocals, guitar, harmonica
T Bone Burnett: acoustic guitar; musical director
    TCB Band:
    Glen D. Hardin: piano
    James Burton: lead guitar
    Jerry Scheff: upright bass
    Ronnie Tutt: drums
    Guest performers:
    Bruce Springsteen: guitar, vocals
Elvis Costello: acoustic guitar, organ, harmonica
    Tom Waits: organ, acoustic guitar
    Michael Utley: keyboards
    Alex Acuña: percussion
    J. D. Souther: backing vocals; acoustic guitar; vocal arrangements
    Steven Soles: backing vocals
    Jackson Browne: backing vocals
    Bonnie Raitt: backing vocals
    k.d. lang: backing vocals
    Jennifer Warnes: backing vocals
Ezra Klinger, Pavel Farkas, Christopher Reutinger, Carol Shive, Cynthia Morrow, Bobby Debow: violin
Jimbo Ross, Peter Hatch: violaRoy Orbison: lead vocals, guitar, harmonica
T Bone Burnett: acoustic guitar; musical director
    TCB Band:
    Glen D. Hardin: piano
    James Burton: lead guitar
    Jerry Scheff: upright bass
    Ronnie Tutt: drums
There are several other songs. If you google "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" they will come up. I mean when you see Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes and KD Lang as backup singers? Wow.

The "backing group" included world class musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, TheTCB Band which backed Elvis Presley, Jennifer Warnes, Tom Waits, K.D.Lang, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Rait etc.
As someone else remarked the whole concert was very special indeed.

all of those artists wanted to join Roy that night because they had been inspired by him in his early days. it was their salute to Roy Orbison. I was a senior in high school when this song originally came out in 1964 and I. along with every other guitar player, was playing that opening riff, do do do do doo, do do do do doo. The most recognizable riff of that decade. He was the greatest. That's what Elvis said about Roy, he was the greatest. .

So many great musicians on that stage, Including guitarist Scotty Moore, who played for Elvis ..And Roy didn't even have to ask twice if they wanted to play for him..They did it for free and for the love they all had for him.

Roy had a rare gift for a man, he could sing in 3 octaves unlike someone like me that is monotoned, I can’t turn away from listening to Roy anymore than I can turn away from listening to the very beautiful Karen Carpenter, my her soul rest in peace.

Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy was known for performing while standing motionless & wearing black clothes to match his dyed black hair & dark sunglasses. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "Crying", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Leah" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the rock supergroup "Traveling Wilburys" with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "Handle With Care", "End Of The Line" etc.

You will NEVER see performances like this today, sad to say. The pantywaists that make so-called "music" today don't even know how to play an instrument, let alone "sing" without autotune... I salute you for reacting to Roy, one of the greatest artists ever.

Pretty Woman was the first song my Daughter learned to play on Guitar. She wanted to play it for her father. It was his favorite song for her. Yes, my daughter is beautiful. He'd sing it to her all the time. I personally don't like Roy Orbison. To each their own I guess.
