  • NEW DELHI: As the centre of gravity of geopolitics and the world economy shifts towards Asia where the biggest beneficiaries of globalization are housed, what should India’s approach be? More engagement, especially in the immediate and extended neighbourhood, says Shivshankar Menon, who has been India’s Foreign Secretary and National Security Adviser. We must use the level of affinity that we have in the sub-continent, he told StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale on ‘Books Corner’. Talking about his new book ‘India and Asian Geopolitics: The Past, Present’, Menon said India needs to open up to the sub-continent and make itself an indispensable partner.

No wonder why China wants this guy as the NSA of India or more specifically Congress at India's helm. These congress members are too weak and prone to surrender to China. From 2004-2013 India lost somewhere around 300 sq, km and more land to China but Indians aren't even aware of that. Recently In a Chinese strategic outlook paper They on record written that China's long-term goal is to curtail India's rise since 2014 with a strong-willed leader who has greater resolve and willingness to give a tit for tat answer to any aggressor. I may not agree with the NDA government on many internal problems but at A strategic level, the NDA government is far superior to its so-called center political party Congress which historically always leaned towards Leftist power like Russia, China. I am completely aware that Americans are not fully reliable but They are a democratic nation and a force of good, unlike China and Russia.

Regional balancing is definitely a bigger need to be a superpower. Because take for example USA or Russia, they have less threat from their surroundings so they could focus more on global level. And they also happens to solve Regional issue first rather than looking at world Issue. So I guess that's what India should focus more on where we need to be confident that while engaging or participating on world level, our regional or more specifically south Asian countries their should be kind of cooperation with them so they won't hinder us when we try to reach on global Level.

      So much of theory.
We first have to define ourselves.
Who are we or rather who should we as.a nation be after partition but the Muslims for the b Muslims ..... Obvious answer should be 'We' should be opposite of Muslims that means 'We' should be non Muslims........ Period

India today doesn't have any strategic (and tactical) cards left to "attract" the neighbors. The lure of a "vast market" is no longer functioning given the economic malaise (driven by political apathy and ignorance). The west is losing its patience from the entire region. India has managed to "isolate" itself from the entire region and China is strengthening that isolation!!

For last 70 years, country like India importing 70 to 80% of Military products. We are so much dependent on China for most of the goods we need. Is it not danger to our national security? Last decades we have been trying to be good friends to China. You may argue that we have maintained peace but at what cost? We have been keeping quiet when they continued shifting boarders. We never could settle the boarder in decades.
China could bully everybody as it has every thing it needs. China is the maximum gainers from Globalisation without giving up self reliance.
So Globalisation is OK, it may give temporary feelings of good GDP growth. But if we do not have reasonable self reliance we are vulnerable to outside developments & there is danger to national security.
You should have good relations on equal terms. Otherwise it is slave & master relationship.

It does not make any sense now to ask the same question again and again- What was the objective of China in doing what they did in 2020? India gave them back effectively and the world watched it. China lost its face. Of course, we all know China has much more national power than India but with Dokhlam and Galwan with South Pongang Pso we proved we are no push overs and can meet them squarely. In future, we will need Quad for IOR and Indo Pacific as also Russia, France and Israel for land border defense against China. And we are set for that. We should treat that we have one enemy on our east, north, west and even south and deal with that situation.

From a Bangladeshi perspective india is full of BS. India tells us not to get too close to China as if its indias right to tell us who we should be close with. China has provided over $48bn in project loans to us while india promised $7.5bn but could manage less the $900mn.
