    God, I love flying! It never ceases to amaze me that the science of airflow over a pair of wings allows the massive weight of an aircraft to leave the ground, yet we do it thousands of times every day!!!! As a physics major in college, I was always in awe of the multi-story aircraft at the gateside terminals at TIA. I could not fully comprehend how they could get these massive machines off the ground, but yet the did. I love to stand on the roof of that airport and watch the flights come and go. It is always a special moment for me.

      The key is to come to the realization how dense Earth's atmosphere actually is. How much pressure it is. We're naturally adapted to it, but it's quite the thick gas soup, so to speak.
      Wind tunnel studies with cars can probably help. Getting an idea of how much resistance is presented there.
      But also pondering the fact that some military planes fly so fast that the air flow heats up the plane surface to problematic temperatures, where you would assume air flow cools.

    Gotta love all the power. Look at the wing flex upward from the force of the wind against the underside of the wing.

    • @crsvetteii1753
      @crsvetteii1753 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Not the wind...what you are seeing is the lift being generated by the airfoil.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I meant fast moving air. Actually you have the air moving much faster over the wing creating lower pressure above it, which in turn allows the air striking under the wing at the same time to be able to push the wing upward toward the lower pressure area. So the airflow striking the underside creating higher pressure is pushing upwards. Higher pressure below the wing, and lower above, allows the wing to push upward. You can see this effect if you watch planes coming in for a landing with a good nose up pitch, the wings are loaded from all the fast moving air striking the underside pushing them up, but of course this cannot occur without the lower pressure area above the wing. You cannot have one without the other. They work together.

    • @sam2000v
      @sam2000v 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      electronicsNmore Yes you can. A completely flat object has no airfoil, but can still flex when the aoa is high. The air striking the underside has little effect on the amount of lift generated, it is the airfoil that does most of that. Airfoils are based on Bernoulli's principle If you want to look it up

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I meant, is in order for the wing to move upwards, you need high pressure below, and low above. You cannot have one without the other UNLESS the wing is completely flat(which they are not).

    • @sam2000v
      @sam2000v 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah okay, I thought you meant the wing had to have a high angle of attack for an airfoil to work at all. What you say now makes sense.

    I'm a 777 pilot.Those are GE90s.They have composite blades. Takeoff power is calculated by weight and runway length. Depending on witch model, GE90s have between 90,000 and 112,000 lbs of thrust. Much more than needed even at MTOW in bad conditions. Remember just one of these engines can fly the plane at altitude. No pilot will waste fuel on takeoff unnecessarily. Also the less throttle used on takeoff reduces the risk of FOD intake. I watched 777 test pilots do a 60 degree climb out with full fuel load at 60 percent throttle on a 180 kn rotate. That's all engines just like back when I would do 90 degree climbs off the deck in an F-18.. Those were the days

    • @MrEvilBacon
      @MrEvilBacon 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a way you are correct. T/O thrust is calculated by weight and rwy length, but also conditions. the rain, and wet rwy played a role. Who knows there could have been a wind shear on T/O so they used full thrust to overcome that.
      also, pilots by airline standard and pretty much aviation standard take off at about 80% N1. it's not about wasting fuel. (you calculate all that during the brief and add the extra fuel to make up for it) its about preserving and protecting the engine. If you use max thrust every take off you would reduce the life expectancy of the engine as well as the reliability of the engine in air. Using reduced thrust (80%) for take off and at about 1500ft reduce even further to climb thrust (60%) the plane has more than enough power to propel itself into the air with slow acceleration.

    • @buckachiddy
      @buckachiddy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think N1 will be much higher than 60% and 80% for climb and takeoff, even in de-rated performance conditions, remember thrust is not linear to the N1 setting.

    They set power only to the level needed to reach V1, V2 at the correct spot and time, taking consideration of the temperature, weight of the plane and cargo, elevation of the airport ect... By not using "FULL POWER" it increases fuel economy, reduces unnecessary engine wear and tear, AND keeps them under the noise limits set forth by the EMEA. So.... unless he had an emergency situation that necessitated full power, like a stall after V1, then those engines were NOT at full power during this entire filming.

      Agree with John Cena. If you search for information, commercial aviation engines has a limited time to work with (near) full throttle. This weird sound is because the tip of the blade is running near the speed of sound, generating this effect.

    Couple of things to point out; These engines are under rated from the manufacturer (ie. governed) as much as 15% for longevity. Also 100% N2 (fan) speed has nothing to do with max power. Power is measured as pressure ratio, max power varies according to air density and temperature, it is far easier to make max power in cold dense air often with N2 speeds in the low 90% range. On many engines N2 speeds can exceed 100-105% on hot days with a high altitude density and still be considered as operated in spec, but exhaust gas temp is usually the limiting factor. N1 (compressor) speed varies far less but does vary. Most manufactures recommend max power settings for only 5 minute intervals also due to heat soak. ~~Run qualified mechanic.

    Most takeoffs use "derated" thrust to save engine wear. For each takeoff, performance is calculated, the necessary power setting is determined and the thrust setting is made. Usually this is below the maximum available level and is known as a derated thrust takeoff.

    At 2:40 where you note the slight power back, this is the standard reduction from takeoff thrust, (which is a reduced thrust setting, not full power), to climb thrust. This is all standard stuff.( I have been an airline pilot for over 27 years.)

    I could almost feel the accelleration. In 1999 I flew Lufthansa 747-400 FRA/IAH with intermediate stop in ATL. Change of crew in ATL, and almost passengers disembarked. For the run down to IAH, I was one of only two in First Class; there were two in Business and about 10 in Coach. Very light fuel and cargo for the short hop. The pilot put the pedal to the metal, and it felt as though we rolled only about 10 feet before shooting into the air. The power and acceleration were breathtaking!

      What does b1 mean just before they take off?

    • @jeffhenley3809
      @jeffhenley3809 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      man9170 Well if you mean "V1", this is the takeoff decision speed, so V=Velocity and 1=Takeoff Decision Speed (V1= Velocity Takeoff Decision Speed). At this speed we will decide to continue the takeoff or reject the takeoff (RTO). Prior to but not including V1 we will reject the takeoff for ANY red warning message (this includes fires), engine failure, or loss of directional control. At or after V1 we will continue the takeoff for everything, including all of the above. The reason for these 2 decisions in reference to the V1 speed is our "accelerate and stop distance" performance, this means rejecting the takeoff at any speed prior to V1 we will have the stopping performance to safely stop the airplane in the remaining distance on the runway without running off the runway. At or after V1 the decision is made to continue the takeoff because it is by far safer to take the aircraft airborne than trying to stop the airplane on the remaining runway and run the risk of running off the runway. V1 is a predetermined speed and is calculated prior to every single takeoff attempt, the calculations include; atmospheric conditions (altitude, temperature, wind), runway conditions (up/down slop of runway, grooved or non-grooved runway, distance), aircraft weight and C/G, aircraft configuration (flaps/slats position, engine or APU bleed system configuration), and some inoperative equipment (anit-skid, thrust reverser, auto break). Well, I hope this helps your understanding, any more questions feel free to ask!!
