- When the schoolchildren wake up to the first rays of sunshine, the temperature is already over 30 degrees Celsius. They live in the Danakil desert in northeast Ethiopia, near an active volcano, in a region that is the world’s hottest on average. Amongst these children are 6-year-old Looita and his sister Khadiga.
Their route to school, which is many kilometres long, takes these children of the Afar tribe over jagged earth, over seemingly endless lengths, and every day they are confronted with much more than just the astounding heat. Not one shadow offers coolness; water is a rare and expensive commodity. Even if a breath of wind blows through the desert it most often quickly evolves into a sandstorm, the grains of which temporarily blind the children and whip at their skin. The very young schoolchildren deal with this until they finally reach their destination: school. But it isn’t over yet. There is still plenty of danger to come.
After school they have to head home in unbelievable temperatures, beyond 50 degrees Celsius. Even the youngest schoolchildren have to help dig wells, while the older children - like 14 year Mohammed - work in the salt mines, to aid their family’s survival. The children as well as the adults do not give up hope that school will help them one day - not just to survive, but also to live well off the barren and inhospitable desert.

My grandfather used to work those same salt mines many years ago, he sent my mom to school even though it was financially devastating for him. She ended up getting a scholarship /sponsorship to a boarding school, graduated top in ethiopia for highschool, went to uni, got her masters, went to America, got her PhD, while in college she helped raise many of her siblings and helped pay for their education. Many have gone to college and have good careers. My grandfather also refused to get his daughters circumcised back in the early 1950s. He was way ahead of his times. I am so greatful for my grandparents for their foresight and their sacrifice as I am greatful to my God and savior for making a way for my family. All of my siblings have finished college and are successful in their careers. I wish the same for these children and their future generations

I grew up and went to school at the south eastern Ethiopia. and i have to walk for almost 90 minute, but thankfully the weather is not much hot but i understand well the barefoot situation. after my parents died i have to leave school at grade 7. after i moved to other region and started again but it`s from grade 5, i have to work at agriculture before or after school and walk for 1 hour to school. i have to work so i can get food and shelter to continue my studies. even so i wasnt fortunate to finish my school even if i was having average 97 percent per subject.. Alhamdulilah am still walking tall and i say to my self nothing can take me down unless i let go my self.

My family runs a school for kids in India, I plan to show these to them because some come from poor background from the city but would not want to study, bunk classes etc.
I think this documentary should be shown in every school in the western world. Maybe kids will appreciate how important school is and how fortunate they really are.
I agree. Western countries have it so good, yet the drop out rates are high,the school ratings are low. Look at these children and that determination they have to better themselves. This should be shown to the current us president and the Republican who think all of us Immigrants are lazy and just want free everything.

At least these kids are getting food, water and education. Some poverty stricken westerners don't even have a roof over their heads. Cuts both ways, don't be so blind to the truth.

RC's Project I made my 4 year old daughter and husband watch it for movie night after we all complained how her new school building is a 25 minute drive. After we watched it the complaining stopped.

Walking over two hours to school and another two hours back in over 100 degrees temperatures with the sandy soil buring holes on their feet is extremely humbling. And all through their daily ordeal, they can spare a smile. It's truly inspiring ! I can no longer complain of any hardship I encounter which is nothing compared to what these kids go through everyday.

I have just discovered these series and my heart sinks watching the adversities that this little children across the globe go through to get a descent education while there many children who run out of school when conditions are all good. I was born and raised in Uganda, Africa. In my country, it is common to find poverty stricken areas with poor roads but at least the risk of danger or death on way to school is limited. Perhaps, I have not moved broadly to prove this... These series have taught me to be grateful ad appreciative about every thing in life, they have opened my eyes to see life with different lenses. I am in an exchange program in a European country and I feel I should share this with the students.

I just wanted to let the viewers know that there are a lot of students going to school like western children with a school bus, private taxis and also picked up and dropped off at school every single day.

Same. I think far too many people instantly assume that all Muslim families oppress women. But every religion is capable of being horrible (white people used Christianity to excuse colonialism) but also good.
Binge watching these today has made me feel so terrible for the days I complained about riding the school bus or waiting for a ride. I definitely want to help! I think actually going to these countries and physically being there to help would be something I would want to do, a sort of missionary trip. God Bless these children, their families, and everyone who watches these 💗

Just go do it on your own or through a group. The missionary is actually what was used to start slavery in Africa. Those missionaries were the agents and brokers of slave trade. Please stay away from it.
I am also thinking about-the day when the world is open once again to learn some of there survival skills in exchange for something useful to them. That is more worthwhile and meaningful than shopping for the latest..nothingness.

Most kids are so distracted by TV & devices that helping their parents is that last thing they want to do... These Ethiopian kids don't know what that's like.. My parents taught me respect, respect your elders, values all of that. But these children have that on a whole different level. And not to demise them they don't got nothin. But what maybe we have in wealth 💰 we lack that happiness family the little things. We take a lot of ish for granted. When I go to church Sunday imma light some candles and pray for them especially!
This is my true story from seven years ago, spanning from 2008 to 2014. Today, I am a university student, and I vividly recall that in order to access water from our home, we had to walk a distance of up to 50 kilometers. Our location was equally distant, situated within one of the Ethiopian Rift Valley regions.

I watched the documentaries in Nepal, Bolivia and Nicaragua and this from Ethiopia. One thing is common, children suffers the most because of poverty. It is very sad that at the other side of the world, there are those living a very luxurious lives. May God help lift the lives of these children featured in these documentaries and other children suffering from poverty.

@@simplefamilylifeohara5318 I think what she meant is their ability to tolerate such harsh enviromental conditions. Imagine living in Death valley without modern amenities. The Danakil Desert is like Death Valley and the only people who live there are these group of people known as Afar. I can't imagine an Ethiopian from any other city or village living there without quickly succumbing to the elements. These people have lived this nomadic and traditional lifestyle in that same environment for centuries so they've learned to tolerate what most people, even within Africa, would not. So, for that reason i would say they are amazing. Having said that, these kids deserve an easier life.
The little girl walks across the desert with no shoes. This is really an eye opener. In America, I took my education for granted. I think this series should be shown during home room classes from elementary through high school to remind our youth the privilege they have because in this country it’s so easy to overlook or forget.

And here i am, complaining that my kids refuse to eat breakfast in the morning, while bus pick them in front of the door, for only 10min drive, they will go to school with bag full of food and drinks, but still i complain that life is difficult!!! Lord Jesus, forgive me. Please Lord, help these brave kids.

Even if I am from Ethiopia...This is so strange to me....I never knew it might be this hard over there in Afar..it puts tears to my eyes..in my school years , I travelled almost for 2 hours almost every day to fetch clean water for my family our donkeys did the carrying part. How ever now is diffrent history our small town people all have tap water. As far as the school we had elementary and high schools in town now the town growing so fast . Most importantly we have better human capital pilots , Doctors , Engineers , Athletes , thanks to lord Almighty with barley gov't help. I am from south Ethiopia even thou we have scarcity of arable land we have favorable climate and land on top the people are delighted to work hrad in other word hard workers. To my opinion the problem to all of this...I know the country's economy is weak but the every gov't come and go they don't have hearts to prioritize places like Afar , Omo valley , where people walking with out clothes on like primitive society on 21st century not due to the weather but b/c of illiteracy. Three larger tribes in Ethiopia ruling the country everytime one in power they worry only about themselves then places like these needed most priorities suffer / starves to death. Thanks white people to bringing this to world stage you are blessed for reason. Our black falks we will stay to suffer if we don't change the way we do things. Stand for truth rather with your tribes or lies. I am not saying all white falks are an angels but they one like the poster of this content and so many other good people.
I've got a 13 year old young brother, much older than Ahmad but I can't imagine him walking such routes. Watching this, my heart sinks and makes me realise how fortunate all of us not in these shoes are.
I showed this video to my 6 year son that complains in the morning when he wakes up and when the bus arrives late , he got tears I hope he learns to appreciate the live and privileges He has.

Watching these videos really make me realize how blessed I am. And the basic things I have are considered “ luxury “ for these poor kids. We can walk to a bus stop and ride a bus to school while these kids have to go through that! These kids are truly brave and courageous:)

Can you imagine how much the owner of that salt mine makes to pay them $50/day when the average salary is $30/MONTH!!? This series of docs on these most dangerous ways to school is absolutely mind blowing. From this desert to the Oymyakon in Siberia to the Himalayas the dangers these kids face just to obtain simple reading and writing skills breaks my heart. I wish there was a way to guarantee that things we could send them to help would actually reach them. I know others in the comments would do the same but charities supposedly working for the people of Ethiopia are rife with corruption sadly

While they have an incredibly hard life already as children (having the responsibility of an adult in many cases as it is shown),
I have found their positive attitude, perseverance and motivation very inspiring!!!!
I hope their hard work will pay off and the education they get at their school will enable them to lead a better life eventually.
For someone like myself, who was born and raised in Africa, I am extremely thankful to live in the United States. These children are experiencing the same reality that I did as a child. This documentary reminds me of God's greatness and goodness. God is good all the time.

After all these shocking videos of what kids go through across the world, this one has torn my heart the most.
I am single and can't reproduce so adopting is my first option to have kids.
After seeing this episode I hope I have the strength and courage to adopt a baby from here because no kids should endure all of this. This is the first episode to truly move me to tears
In my country Ethiopia Unless their family die no one give their children for adoption,my mom raise six of her children by working difficult work even she doesn't allow her relative to adopt her children
Wow this is really sad, it really teaches us the importance of being grateful for what you have, a bus to school or an Uber- these are the things we look down on cause we want to use cool cars and other materialistic things. We should learn to appreciate the little we have cause others have nothing at all.

This documentary reminds me of the hardships and difficulties of life wayback in my country. Looking at the kids struggling to reach school is a lot inspiring despite how hard life is, they still manage to pursue getting learned at least. Thank you for this video. These children are wonderfully brave souls. I live in Australia where a lot of children take education for granted. These video's should be shown in all schools through-out this country. I deeply appreciate Free Documentary for sharing the struggles of these children.
Aye, these need to be shown to American kids too! Unfortunately in my family there were too many young ladies that chose to piss away their opportunities for *free* (funded by taxpayers) education.... while these kids literally risk their lives and *want* to go to school .... when certain cultures begin to value education for girls & women... things will improve

That water is probably cleaner than lead laced American tap water. It's from the ground, the worst it could have is e-coli. Which it doesn't seem to survive in that harsh environment, the high salt and heat won't do it. But the people are eating cooking with it. They are standing and walking and living. Funny how other African people use the term 'privileged' to describe what we all have in one form or another. He probably has cleaner water than yours, just because it's mixed with sand doesn't mean it's toxic all the way. But it is always best to have clear water anyways. I hope somebody volunteers to dig a well for them like they did in the school ground.

I'm Ethiopian myself and I drive to school when I used to live there, but I can't imagine what these kids are going through There walking miles in hot wethar sleeping outside I am so greatful now I didn't realize how much I have thanks god!

Heat from magma and heat from the sun, no water and a 2 hour walk. These kids are made of some strong stuff and I have nothing but admiration for them. I wish they all succeed in life and make it far, they have the determination to do so. What great kids, my heart! They put British teens to shame!!!

This should answer your questions as to why African immigrants who come to the States never go back to Africa. Life in Africa is cheaper than e meal and it's the worst continent to be a kid.
This is kinda random but I met a kid in college who was from Ethiopia and he was the nicest guy. He was so excited to be in America, he hadn’t been here long and I’ll just never forget him.
I have been to Ethiopia and these are the most precious, giving people you can imagine! I sponsor 2 children there. There is a charity named Children’s Hopechest and it’s a wonderful charity and has very few employees so they can give the most funds available to the areas that they are in. At our care point in Holeta, Ethiopia there has been a water point made where the community can get clean, fresh water. I have witnessed firsthand the precious kids in Holeta drinking from the different spouts of the water point. It is a humbling experience to say the least. The charity makes it possible for children to attend school and they minister to the whole family also. ❤🇪🇹

I complain when I have to drive 45 minutes to work in my air-conditioned car. The fact that the children in this video (and all the others in this series) have to make this journey TWICE a day absolutely boggles my mind. I take so very much for granted. Where we are born and the lives we live is such a toss of the dice that we should never let that twist of fate be far from our minds.

I’m so happy that I have a bike for my way to school, I could not imagine to walk like these absolute troupers, they have such strength and resilience.
I only have to cycle 25 kilometers to school and when I arrive I feel dead and these kids have to walk and have to cope with nature. Something unimaginable for Europe
