  • World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Ethiopia 2016
Deadliest Roads - Ghana: • Video
Ethiopia is among the hardest-hit countries in terms of deadly traffic accidents. Trains and trucks circulate along infrastructure from another age. For trucks in the south of the country, the transport of goods and people take place in the rain and on slippery roads… There is, however, no alternative, as flying is too expensive and the trains are no longer in working condition, except one. This one train travels through half of the country, from the city of Dire Dawa to the border at Djibouti. It travels 310 kilometres over the course of more than 10 hours - on a good day. This last known working train is no stranger to derailments and breaks down on a regular basis. It is the oldest but also the most dangerous train in the world! From the Danakil desert to the rainy summits of the Kaffa region, welcome to Ethiopia!

“A bad driver is someone who is scared of the road
Good drivers never slow down” says one Ethiopian driver, traveling between Guelilie and Dire Dawa.
The journey begins in Guelilie, and is one of the oldest border crossing points along the Djibouti-Ethiopia border, and the nation's second largest inland port of entry. We travel along - on a camel, on a truck, on a train - through the Danakil Depression - a place which has the world's highest average annual temperature of 34 °C (93.2 °F). The route is from Guelile to Dire Dawa.
We see what it’s like to mine white gold. The salt is made into Saltwater slabs. It’s 50° C in the shade but there’s no shade. Camels 🐪 are actually more practical and reliable than trucks or trains.
At the time of filming this doc: Roads are crap and the trains chronically crap. The Railway system was/is in absolute shambles (although there was/is a plan that has hopefully been realized) Public transport via rail has since improved - we’re told.
“I know my taxi better than my wife. Because I’ve spent more time with her.” The people of this region prefer relying on camels and/or cars.
The locals here befriend hyenas. I wouldn’t try it myself but our guy seems to have figured it out.
“One single hyena has the strength of seven horses,” says the guy. He goes out of his way to make friends with the animals so they see him as a friend, not a foe ie potential dinner.
Some of many more interesting facts about Ethiopia
    1. During the late-19th-century Scramble for Africa, Ethiopia and Liberia were the only two nations that preserved their sovereignty from long-term colonisation by a European colonial power, and many newly independent nations on the continent adopted its flagcolours. Ethiopia was the first independent African member of the League of Nationsand the United Nations
    2. The nation is a land of geographical contrasts, ranging from the vast fertile west, with its forests and numerous rivers, to the world's hottest settlement of Dallol in its north.
    3. The Ethiopian Highlands are the largest continuous mountain ranges in Africa, and the Sof Omar Caves contains the largest cave on the continent.
    4. Ethiopia is also considered one of the earliest sites of the emergence of anatomically modern humans, Homo sapiens. Simply put, it is considered the Birth place or cradle of humanity
    5. Ethiopia’s prime minister is a Nobel peace prize winner. 2019 Abiy Ahmed won. We hope he deserves it considering the current situation in the Tigray province.
    6. Ethiopia is vulnerable to many of the effects of climate change. These include increases in temperature and changes in precipitation. Climate change in these forms threatens food security and the economy, which is agriculture based. Many Ethiopians have been forced to leave their homes and travel as far as the Gulf, Southern Africa and Europe.
    7. As the first part of a ten-year Road Sector Development Program, between 1997 and 2002 the Ethiopian government began a sustained effort to improve its infrastructure of roads. As a result, as of 2015 Ethiopia has a total (Federal and Regional) of 100,000 km of roads, both paved and gravel
    8. English is the most widely spoken foreign language, (even though French is also spoken) and is the medium of instruction in secondary schools. Amharic was the language of primary school instruction, but has been replaced in many areas by regional languages such as Oromiffa, Somali or Tigrinya
    9. The capital is Addis Abeba with a population of circa 3 million and at 2,355 meters above sea level, one of the high altitude cities of the world. Addis Abeba means new flower 🌸 I like that.
    10. Most poor families (75%) share their sleeping quarters with livestock, and 40% of children sleep on the floor, where nighttime temperatures average 5 degrees Celsius in the cold season. The average family size is six or seven, living in a 30-square-meter mud and thatch hut, with less than two hectares of land to cultivate
    11. Still, it is a spectacularly beautiful land - we hope for its people, life improves.
There’s much more to find out about this culturally and ethnically rich country. If we’ve piqued your interest, go for it. There are lots of books, articles and docs available.
    Enjoy!

Also, this documentary must have been made before 2016. The 752.7km Ethiopia-Djibouti railway also known as Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, has already been rebuilt anew and inaugurated in 2016. Since then, it is the first modern electrified railway line in East Africa.!

This documentary shows and reminds me of that how much Ethiopia need to and have to build the dam on Nile(Abay) and finish it soon to provide for its people at least pure and enough drinking water let alone the electricity .Egypt should be ashamed to even argue or disagree the dams progress ,they Epyptians must even assist for the compilation of this lifeline dam of Ethiopia if they feel and know humanity!!

I've driven the road from Addis Ababa to The mining town of Shakiso when I was working with Midroc Gold mine, though the road is terribly bad especially during rainy days, I enjoyed the scenery along the way.

After watching some of the featured videos, that boat from Congo was the hardest means of transportation for me and the best video featured also but I still hadn't watched other videos. These documentaries are addictive,I watch it always as a way of getting me to sleep.

Honest question -- why is everything blue? All the cars and tuk-tuks and even the uniforms and a lot of the clothing are all blue. Does that mean something special in Ethiopia? Curious.

@@TammyPetry Great question Tammy. I can tell u for sure about the blue vehicles. All Taxis are all blue in Ethiopia. Just like they are mostly yellow in America. As for the clothing, I need to re watch the video to see which ppl had on blue as I didn't notice before. The color blue has no significant meaning in Ethiopia.

@@TammyPetry no it does not have any implication we just use that color to differentiate cabs from other cars
