@@jonathansacci2325 If you need really long battery life combined with an excellent display then yes, these are the best on the market and so the price is justified. If you need xcode then you don't really have a choice and you just need to bite the bullet get the spec you need to do your work. But for many uses, like non-ios software development, these laptops are not great value for money once you consider the non-base models. Which you will since 16GB is not enough these days. Even premium laptops like XPS are much cheaper on higher specced configs (at least in my part of the world) and if you're OK with something like the Asus G15 you're even better off.

Most TH-camrs themselves don't need it, their videos are just glued footage from a camera with some color correction. They don't do coding, 3D renders, machine learning and other intensive tasks.

I’ve bought the 16” version and I absolutely love it. First MBP was bought in 2015, second the touch bar model in 2018. 2015 model felt like a tank, a real professional tool, loved it. 2018 Touch Bar model was really nice, but had lost the “tank like feel”, felt flimsy and I hated the keyboard. This is a real return to what a MBP should be, an absolute tank of a machine that you can depend on. I’m a web developer so don’t need blistering performance, I just need a workhorse. The MagSafe charging is a real unexpected bonus, one of the USB ports broke on my touch bar model. This feels like it’s been designed by engineers, not designers. (No offence to designers, design is very important).

Glad Dave mentioned "Most people don't need it", we need more tech reviewers like you making sensible suggestions instead of pushing people to the newest and greatest. I have seen so many people with top end MBPs but use them like Chromebooks.

Haha But, in all honesty, even for myself, I think I wouldn't really benefit from having so many GPUs like there are for these new MacBooks. My current workflow is with Microsoft Word, Edge (using Windows at the moment), and some photo work with PowerPoint (very basic poster work). Personally, I think I'd just want this for gaming, if ever MacBooks can be wholly supported for gaming (but seeing Overwatch playing at 120 FPS is just nuts!).
The problem is these things have a way better screen (mini-LED, 120HZ, 1000 nits). That would really tempt me to step up to the Pro when all I'd really need is the Air.
@@GoldGiggler After watching this when he compared real game I think windows laptops are still best for gaming, M1 Max doesn't even beat 3060 properly, but costs like 2-3 times more. These new macs have an amazing screen, power efficiency and are ultra quiet, but the price tag is HUGE. I was hoping that this M1 Max would perform at 3080 level as apple claimed (even in games) so I can grab one and even price tag would be not as bad at this point, but its not, so I think Ill stick with something like M16 for more than half the price.
I only need an M1 in terms of use cases, but it would be really nice to have all the new hardware upgrades these laptops have. I'm in the market for a new laptop and it's annoying that I either have to settle for a 5 year old macbook design or cough up an extra $1000 AUD ($700 USD) for extra ports, magsafe, a biggert and better screen and webcam.

40?! I know that’s not actually all that old, but you look so much younger. Edit: On another note, I really appreciate the more down to earth approach to reviewing these, and that unless you have a clear need/use-case for these tools that you shouldn’t buy them. Sounds obvious, but sometimes you get caught up in all the hype and just want it to have it, so you really helped me decide I don’t actually need one. I do video edit and use many Adobe products, but seeing as how the MacBooks aren’t specifically better in that regard than a top end windows machine kinda pushed me off the fence. I do seriously enjoy the Apple aesthetic, but not for that price.
Yes! While the air is slower.. if you want to be able to do a lot of what these can do, but not like... well... just get an air. You can edit videos fine on an air.. like we have premier at home kinda fine.. but it totally works.

We received those at work last week and I migrated all my workflows and data to it. It is a fantastic machine, and I think that, as a keyboard snob, it’s the best laptop keyboard I have played with for a long time. I also like the simplistic aesthetics of the case and the thickness. The screen panel is really the best thing I have looked at and coding on such a platform is a real joy.
I still have my 2012 MacBook Pro… and I love it. Waited till this day… and finally Apple made something that makes me want to buy a new MacBook. I’m probably not the target for this product, but after almost 10 years I deserve this :)
Well, I bought the new MacBook. It’s a great machine, but I still miss the Mid 2012 keyboard hahha It was expected, cause that keyboard had such a great feeling with the travel distance 🥲

Agree 100%. I just wish Apple made a 16" MBA/non-pro MacBook. I've been thrilled with the performance of an M1 MBP as a software dev, and I'm making the leap to a 16" mostly for the extra screen real estate (and the 32 core GPU for... other reasons lol).
The regular M1 is so good that MBPs become something really reserved for professional and heavy load. Most people probably should get MBA and only buy 13 MBP for extra battery life.

I found myself intrigued by the MBP Max and tempted to delve deeper but the caveat Dave at the end spoke to me. It's true though. People get seriously bent out of shape to try and keep up with the latest hardware. Pros who charge for their time? Absolutely $10k every year can make sense often. At-home hobbyist, who just does the occasional render? Grab a coffee and save the $$$ on hardware.
Dave's reviews have the highest quality content / min density of any YT review. No BS. No boring irrelevant intros. Immediately hits all the relevant issues that we all want to hear about. Thank you Dave for doing God's work.
The "you don't need this" at the end is so true! I have a 16" Intel MBP that's nearly fully speced, and I had no intentions/still have no intentions on upgrading this generation. I use my MBP for music production, and photography. I do sometimes feel the need to upgrade, especially if I'm making a large photoshop project, or exporting 100 Tiff files or making a crazy experimental song, but that just doesn't happen enough, and it doesn't impede my life enough to make it worth the upgrade. It does get annoying, but it probably happens a handful of times a month, and might save an hour or two throughout the year. The $4-5k I'm saving by not buying a new MBP is definitely worth the wasted time.

I bought one today. M1 Pro 16 1TB. My last mbp was a 2015 retina that I bought RIGHT before the touchbar was added. It's been my workhorse since; but I've been in dire need of an upgrade. This was it.

i'm holding on to my M1 Air! it's more than just horsepower, it's efficient, light, no fans! Most of all it's not slowing me down at all... does yours slow your day down? In a few years i'll get an iMac for the superior performance and even then the M1 Air will make a perfect sidekick for "on-the-go".

The notch looks ugly to some but doesn't actually remove any space from the last models (still 16:10 aspect ratio below). But yeah... bit ugly. Apple should make a setting to completely black out the top with a virtual bezel for those who hate it.

I always say if it still does what you need with no problems then no need to upgrade. Saves money and also the environment in the process. Once my laptop starts having serious issues coping with important tasks due to hardware then I upgrade.

The Premiere benchmark was super helpful to put this in context. I, too, thought this would be a beast with rendering but if it's not much better than my windows machine, there's no rush to grab this.
I appreciate your closing statement, lots of people buy things just because they are new and "better" without ever considering if they actually need them or not. Great video overall!
As for the final thoughts: I DO need it. Mine is from Late 2013. This is the upgrade I've been waiting for ever since I wanted to upgrade, but didn't because... a Touch Bar and a butterfly keyboard.
As a web developer I would consider myself a "pro" user but I still think a machine like this might be overpowered for my needs. A mac with a large 16" screen would be great for me but I dont do any heavy graphics work or video rendering. Getting something with such a powerful chip would be a waste of money.

Perfect review. All the infos you need in just 8 minutes. Especially liked the reminder at the ending. These are Pro machines. Your average user will never even tap into the performance of these devices. That's what the M1 is for, it'll even get you better battery performance on the 13".
Finally someone gets the point of the HDMI port. It's when you're in a conference room and you want to share a presentation or screen share for a short period of time. I don't think you would avoid a thunderbolt dock/display with this MacBook Pro and that's not a bad thing.

I’ve bought the 16” version and I absolutely love it. First MBP was bought in 2015, second the touch bar model in 2018. 2015 model felt like a tank, a real professional tool, loved it. 2018 Touch Bar model was really nice, but had lost the “tank like feel”, felt flimsy and I hated the keyboard. This is a real return to what a MBP should be, an absolute tank of a machine that you can depend on. I’m a web developer so don’t need blistering performance, I just need a workhorse. The MagSafe charging is a real unexpected bonus, one of the USB ports broke on my touch bar model. This feels like it’s been designed by engineers, not designers. (No offence to designers, design is very important).

Glad Dave mentioned "Most people don't need it", we need more tech reviewers like you making sensible suggestions instead of pushing people to the newest and greatest. I have seen so many people with top end MBPs but use them like Chromebooks.

Haha But, in all honesty, even for myself, I think I wouldn't really benefit from having so many GPUs like there are for these new MacBooks. My current workflow is with Microsoft Word, Edge (using Windows at the moment), and some photo work with PowerPoint (very basic poster work). Personally, I think I'd just want this for gaming, if ever MacBooks can be wholly supported for gaming (but seeing Overwatch playing at 120 FPS is just nuts!).

This sums up my brother. I have 2 M1 Macbook Airs and gave him one. I use mine for coding and admin stuff...he uses it as a Chromebook.
The problem is these things have a way better screen (mini-LED, 120HZ, 1000 nits). That would really tempt me to step up to the Pro when all I'd really need is the Air.
@@GoldGiggler After watching this when he compared real game I think windows laptops are still best for gaming, M1 Max doesn't even beat 3060 properly, but costs like 2-3 times more.
These new macs have an amazing screen, power efficiency and are ultra quiet, but the price tag is HUGE.
I was hoping that this M1 Max would perform at 3080 level as apple claimed (even in games) so I can grab one and even price tag would be not as bad at this point, but its not, so I think Ill stick with something like M16 for more than half the price.

I only need an M1 in terms of use cases, but it would be really nice to have all the new hardware upgrades these laptops have. I'm in the market for a new laptop and it's annoying that I either have to settle for a 5 year old macbook design or cough up an extra $1000 AUD ($700 USD) for extra ports, magsafe, a biggert and better screen and webcam.

Edit: On another note, I really appreciate the more down to earth approach to reviewing these, and that unless you have a clear need/use-case for these tools that you shouldn’t buy them. Sounds obvious, but sometimes you get caught up in all the hype and just want it to have it, so you really helped me decide I don’t actually need one. I do video edit and use many Adobe products, but seeing as how the MacBooks aren’t specifically better in that regard than a top end windows machine kinda pushed me off the fence. I do seriously enjoy the Apple aesthetic, but not for that price.

We received those at work last week and I migrated all my workflows and data to it. It is a fantastic machine, and I think that, as a keyboard snob, it’s the best laptop keyboard I have played with for a long time. I also like the simplistic aesthetics of the case and the thickness. The screen panel is really the best thing I have looked at and coding on such a platform is a real joy.

Thank you for saying that most people probably don't need this! I see so many people who think they need a 16 inch MBP when they only use it for school or web browsing! It's total insanity. Consumers need to know when a product is not marketed towards them and when they need to save their money and buy a cheaper device. Love your videos Dave!
Agree 100%. I just wish Apple made a 16" MBA/non-pro MacBook. I've been thrilled with the performance of an M1 MBP as a software dev, and I'm making the leap to a 16" mostly for the extra screen real estate (and the 32 core GPU for... other reasons lol).

I found myself intrigued by the MBP Max and tempted to delve deeper but the caveat Dave at the end spoke to me. It's true though. People get seriously bent out of shape to try and keep up with the latest hardware. Pros who charge for their time? Absolutely $10k every year can make sense often. At-home hobbyist, who just does the occasional render? Grab a coffee and save the $$$ on hardware.

The "you don't need this" at the end is so true! I have a 16" Intel MBP that's nearly fully speced, and I had no intentions/still have no intentions on upgrading this generation. I use my MBP for music production, and photography. I do sometimes feel the need to upgrade, especially if I'm making a large photoshop project, or exporting 100 Tiff files or making a crazy experimental song, but that just doesn't happen enough, and it doesn't impede my life enough to make it worth the upgrade. It does get annoying, but it probably happens a handful of times a month, and might save an hour or two throughout the year. The $4-5k I'm saving by not buying a new MBP is definitely worth the wasted time.

My last mbp was a 2015 retina that I bought RIGHT before the touchbar was added. It's been my workhorse since; but I've been in dire need of an upgrade. This was it.

i'm holding on to my M1 Air! it's more than just horsepower, it's efficient, light, no fans! Most of all it's not slowing me down at all... does yours slow your day down?
In a few years i'll get an iMac for the superior performance and even then the M1 Air will make a perfect sidekick for "on-the-go".

@@myp0h yeah do it. Who really likes carrying around a $2-4k laptop anyway? I used to do that and was always so paranoid about it. The notch looks ugly to some but doesn't actually remove any space from the last models (still 16:10 aspect ratio below). But yeah... bit ugly. Apple should make a setting to completely black out the top with a virtual bezel for those who hate it.

Thank you Dave for such an honest review,especially the part at the end. Yes they are amazing machines but you will not have anything to do in them unless you're a professional or something. You'll be really disappointed with you purchase decision after the new laptop excitement wears off and you find out that there's nothing to do in it except watch videos. I regretted buying the M1 Macbook because I got excited and now I regret it,don't make the same mistake.
I always say if it still does what you need with no problems then no need to upgrade. Saves money and also the environment in the process. Once my laptop starts having serious issues coping with important tasks due to hardware then I upgrade.

The Premiere benchmark was super helpful to put this in context. I, too, thought this would be a beast with rendering but if it's not much better than my windows machine, there's no rush to grab this.

Great review Dave, the only video so far that has actually good content that talks about real experiences with the machine.
As for the final thoughts: I DO need it. Mine is from Late 2013. This is the upgrade I've been waiting for ever since I wanted to upgrade, but didn't because... a Touch Bar and a butterfly keyboard.

As a web developer I would consider myself a "pro" user but I still think a machine like this might be overpowered for my needs. A mac with a large 16" screen would be great for me but I dont do any heavy graphics work or video rendering. Getting something with such a powerful chip would be a waste of money.

Especially liked the reminder at the ending. These are Pro machines. Your average user will never even tap into the performance of these devices. That's what the M1 is for, it'll even get you better battery performance on the 13".

Finally someone gets the point of the HDMI port. It's when you're in a conference room and you want to share a presentation or screen share for a short period of time. I don't think you would avoid a thunderbolt dock/display with this MacBook Pro and that's not a bad thing.
Or the world can have one truely usable wireless display protocol.
