I also know that stereotypes are general and lacking of actual evidence when judging a person. For example i'm italian but i never played a mandolino and never been involvend in mafia. Another point: Some times when you talk to someone of your country, or your Town, or your religion, you agree with them. Some times you do not, and you might find more common points in certain topics or Life decisions with someone you do not identify with. Internet and globalization proves my point. There's this viral story here in Malaysia where 2 young women (they're Muslim & wear hijab) from Malaysia went for vacation to South Korea because they were influenced by K-dramas. However, on the subway, an elderly Korean lady started screaming at them and called them "terrorists" over & over again. They were supposed to be in South Korea for 2 weeks, but flew back to Malaysia after just 4 days, immediately after that subway incident, because they felt so humiliated for being treated that way. They felt so disillusioned by the experience because South Korea was not what it was like in the K-dramas. This is my personal opinion but if you're not a blue-eyed blonde or look like a stereotypical Caucasian, or if you're a dark-skinned Southeast Asian, don't expect to get treated nicely in Korea.
Most elders in Korea are conservative about foreigners… Korea is and had been a single race country for so long those elders probably don’t know much about foreigners and the fact that they are also same human with feelings. The younger generations in Korea are not usually like that unless they are very uneducated.

I am hijabi and I lived in korea for 1 year as a student, people were super nice but I have faced discrimination like only 2 times. One drunk old man spit near my shoes but it happened to my white professor as well so it was not hate against Muslims. Second time I was in cafe with white friend and it was during covid, we both put down our masks to drink coffee but the staff member talked to me only about wearing the mask again even though everybody else were not wearing the mask. However, Korean people helped me more than I can count ❤ took pictures with me, offered snacks and ask about where am I from. I would definitely go back for sightseeing again ❤

Thank you for being so open minded and understanding that some people are just socially inept. I as a Korean being born in Korea was also shocked by how people didn’t say sorry or excuse me as well. The open staring was well, surprising as well, I usually got it because I was with my sister and we spoke English unless my parents were with us and then we’d speak Korean but yeah, awkward 😂. I remember my sister's friend, she's Korean, when my sister visits korea her friends tell her stories of how people would look at her differently just because she dye her hair uniquely. She's an art teacher, graduated from US university, western educated kid coming back to Korea to work but the culture difference hit her too. And my sister happens to be Muslim wearing hijab so them together at a cafe, that surely put in stares everywhere. 😂

I hope they don’t find themselves in any unfortunate situations to have their feelings hurt and that they both comfortably live without worrying about others’ expectations. People always tell me that I’m unique, I’m not up to Korean beauty standards, not super skinny, not super light-skinned but I have a lot of confidence (thanks dad) so I don’t really care about what other people think of me. It seems like people are always impressed about that because they always tell me how self-conscious they are about everything but to me they all have nothing to be self-conscious of. Everyone, just live your lives, you are your own main character, just move forward in kindness and confidence. ❤️❤️❤️

In Korea both left and right wings are bipartisan social conservatives, and both oppose anti-discrimination law that bans discrimination and assault against foreigners, immigrants, and homosexuals. So discriminating against immigrants or foreigners is legal in Korea. Recently korean government restricted the immigrants’ freedom to move freely. Now immigrants can’t move freely and get out from the their own designated area unless they get permission by the authority.
Jewish, Christian women also used to wear Scarf or cover their heads till some 50 years ago. It's just industrial/corporate culture which forced them to change. Muslim women (not all Muslim women) though carrying this traditional look despite facing hardships. This applies to all nations: when foreigners come to a particular country, the onus is on them to know and do what is socially and culturally appropriate in that society. Koreans, like Brits, the Irish, or even Americans, have a distinct culture and mindset that are unique to them and is a part of their cultural identity and heritage which no native will allow to be diluted with outside impurities.

I am hijabi and I lived in korea for 1 year as a student, people were super nice but I have faced discrimination like only 2 times.
One drunk old man spit near my shoes but it happened to my white professor as well so it was not hate against Muslims.
Second time I was in cafe with white friend and it was during covid, we both put down our masks to drink coffee but the staff member talked to me only about wearing the mask again even though everybody else were not wearing the mask.
However, Korean people helped me more than I can count ❤ took pictures with me, offered snacks and ask about where am I from.
I would definitely go back for sightseeing again ❤

Wearing scarf, having beard, covering heads doesn't make someone terr*rists, extremist approach towards others make it.
Muslims women went through soo much and had to work soooo hard to normalised wearing hijab and now many Christian women starting to feel safe and accepting of wearing hijab thanks to Muslim women ❤❤❤

@@positive4789 well that's what i did often times lol. and they always got caught off guard and look the other way. btw this thing happened more ofter with elderly though, most younger people couldn't be bothered. I think it's just Korea has been so homogeneous for a LONG time, they just not used to people looking different and got curious when see one, hence the staring. LOL

This applies to all nations: when foreigners come to a particular country, the onus is on them to know and do what is socially and culturally appropriate in that society. Koreans, like Brits, the Irish, or even Americans, have a distinct culture and mindset that are unique to them and is a part of their cultural identity and heritage which no native will allow to be diluted with outside impurities.
There’s nothing wrong to be all you girls are cute. I don’t care what religion that you all are because all you girls are respectful, caring lovely to be with and to talk to get to know and fun to be with.
