    When our hired hand on the farm retired after many years with my family ; my father asked him what he would like as a retirement gift. He replied , " Yes there is - I'd like to visit the John Deere headquarters and manufacturing plant in the mid-west " . Request granted.

    Another thing is that John Deere built plows before people ordered them. So he had instant stock on hand. Prior to him, blacksmiths built items to order. That could mean a long delay when you needed a plow or something.

    • @BradDison
      @BradDison  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow. That certainly would've given him the advantage. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

    As other commenter are asking, does anyone know what became of the wife & children he left behind? It's hardly a success story if he ran away as a coward & didn't even support them. I'm hoping there is a postscript where he sent for them so they could share in his success.

    John Deere is the LAST brand of tractor I'd buy today. They are the "Apple" of heavy equipment in that they do not support the right to repair. It sucks that this once great company has been transformed into one of the more anti-consumer brands. P.S. I wonder if he even ever supported the family he left after he became successful?

    In a way this story is kind of sad because he left his wife and children, including a new baby soon to be born. John probably thought about them often, and the same goes for his wife thinking about him.

    Near as I can tell from Wikipedia (so take that as you will) his wife and children joined him in Illinois. He's mentioned here as having 4 daughters and a child on the way, when he ran, but he fathered 9 children in his life, and sold his business to his son Charles, and a son-in-law, before he died. Only one wife was mentioned.

    I am very surprised that Paul Harvey, of ALL people, didn't mention the wife and 3 and one-half kids left behind. That makes me believe that our "John" was one of our original dirtbags. I don't see anything to be proud about there.
