  • "What you and I might consider to be not the best democratic practice is so deeply entrenched in our culture that it has infected our politics as well," Shashi Tharoor, MP for the Indian National Congress (INC) party tells Tim Sebastian on this week's Conflict Zone.
    Join the debate below.
    Conflict Zone is Deutsche Welle's top political interview. Every week, our hosts Tim Sebastian and Michel Friedman are face-to-face with global decision-makers, seeking straight answers to straight questions, putting the spotlight on controversial issues and calling the powerful to account.

    Tim Sebastian has researched his questions well and Indian journos should learn a thing or two from this instead of producing ear shattering high decibel debates which sound more like a fish market chatter.

      +Adora301 Tim Sebastian is known for asking hard-hitting, incisive questions. He is not a chatter. This is called counter-questioning and this is how proper interviews are conducted. If this is too abrasive for you, you should've watched his Hard Talk programme on BBC World.

    • @Adora301
      @Adora301 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      truetool I don't mind listening to counter questions, that is what makes it interesting however, the interviewer needs to listen to answers. Trying to corner the interviewee is absolutely amazing and delicious to watch, but you got him on your channel for a reason, for his opinion or take on a subject, let him give it!!

    • @truetool
      @truetool 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think he provided Shashi ample opportunities to respond. Interviewers are time-bound by the duration of the show, and a topic must be covered with the depth that it deserves. So if an interviewee does not complete his reply within the appropriate time, he cannot be permitted to go on indefinitely. I could compare him to Arnab Goswami for his manner of counter-questioning, but I don't think either of us would hold him to such a low standard.

    The difference between BJP and Congress supporters is that BJP supporters will stand behind Shashi Tharoor and even defend him whenever he is defending India and supporting India's stand. But Congress supporters, they are so filled with so much hate, and bias that they will even insult and stand against Indian interests just so they get the pleasure of saying "Gotcha!" to PM Modi. It's not difficult to see that if you really stand with India, BJP comes as a natural choice.

      Hey, it is not like we don't have journalists who CANNOT ask such basic questions. We have a great deal of veteran journalists who can do that, but the question is, is there a WILL to do so from the media houses they work for? No. They're under constant pressure from editors to increase the TRPs, for which they have to resort to unnecessarily controversial, or, as we say, "masala" line of questioning. Its the Indian people who need to stop watching such stuff and increase watching good stuff, so that the TRPs go to the right channels.

    At the Oxford Union debate and elsewhere, Dr. Shashi Tharoor was pretty good with his flowery words, at accusing the British of their corruption, criminalities and cruelty to India, he showed such an air of confidence, But, when he is attacked about the corruption and illegalities of the member of his own political party, he says that the behavior, it is part of the Indian culture and everyone else does the same.
    At the Oxford Union when his side debated about how the British became rich using slavery tactics, his side of the debate did not accept, that slavery behavior was part of the culture at the time and everyone in Europe did it too!
    Dr. Shashi never mentioned that it was the Europeans who started influencing India not to burn their widows! Poor women!
    "There were several ways of performing the Sati- The widow was first required to place her hand on the Sati stone for remembrance; next, she had the options of drinking poison, cutting her neck with a sharp object, or allowing herself to be snake-bitten. Thereafter, she could either lie next to the dead body, walk into the pyre, or sit on the pyre and light herself. Some communities performed the last honor by building a hut for the woman and her deceased to perform the pyre. Another places the name on the pyre while the woman walks into it.
    Introduced between 320 to 550 CE, during the reign of the Gupta Empire, Sati is named after the mythical story of Sati (meaning purity or true), Lord Shiva’s wife who burned herself as proof of her love for her husband as opposed to her father’s stubborn hatred for him. This was seen as the purest form of love.
    This act, hailed as heroic, was first adopted by the royal families of the Kshatriya caste before it became forcefully practiced between the 15th and 18th centuries. Interestingly, unlike the families of the Kshatriya, the women of the Brahmin caste were excluded from this practice because the Brahmins believed that because they belonged to this caste (also regarded as a high caste), their caste allowed them naturally attain purity hence there was no need to perform Sati."
    Dr. Shashi Tharoor has joined the "popularity wagon", often prostituting his mind through his mouth aperture, so we all know how he needs to behave in public. He will be telling the children of India that they need to go to the Factory schools and the Community college to learn to be plumbers, carpenters and being cobblers, shoemakers, blacksmiths, welders, and tire repairers, but he will never let his own children go to Community colleges to learn how to run sewer pipes and install toilets around India so that the number of Toilets facilities would at least number as much as mobile telephones. Shashi has now the need to behave in the same manner as he described the Texans, " All conspicuous hats and no cattle meat ", or what we say about politicians and public figures, "All show and no substance". Dr. Shashi Tharoor is brilliant with words and he chose to exploit people with his charm, but the psychology of a public figure is well known, and he does behave like Sir Winston Churchill for, after all, they both chose to exploit the public by using their mouth aperture/ orifice, where any uttered or written language symbol is only a symbol, a shadow, an image, an illusion of reality and there is nothing tangible nor guaranteed when a man earns his living by using his voice. All religions shape life and reality with just words by adding a few rituals as Shashi does. The general public loves and needs that sort of entertainment. It is the basis of a democratic rule!
    In India, all experienced cobblers, carpenters, plumbers, and toilet installers, will be telling their children, especially the women, to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Shashi Tharoor and to take up vociferous social and public-oriented professions, where, talking in public is more lucrative than installing sewers and toilets in Indian homes. Most children in India will now prefer to project words to people, in spoken or written form, rather than manufacturing tangible hardware products that need to be guaranteed and maintained. Dr. Shashi and others in India are as clever as Winston Churchill in exploiting the public around them with their vociferous unguaranteed charms, never producing a tangible product for the comfort of the families. It is a new Religion they preach, full of promises which are never delivered, but enough to invite Indian Children to follow in their footsteps, with the expected consequences. .

    All tharoor did was Whataboutry that BJP or other party did that or this, so it's fair for Congress to do the same.
    Congress is so corrupt morally that I find it hilarious that how Tharoor couldn't loose his nerve answering all the questions. I'd have rather left the party after such a embarrassing interview.
    But Tharoor handled the Kashmir issue very smartly - I appreciate him for that.

    These are the genuine questions and the way they are asked seems like attacking Shashi Tharoor for his recent Oxford Union debate and the book on colonialism in India. You attacked us and now it's time for the repayment. Like if NATO doesn't violate the human rights in conflict zones and Tim's question is like India proudly says it's democracy but still they won't take the actions against human right violations in Kashmir. European countries violate human rights and its NATO partners like Turkey violate them but attacking instead of asking questions and let him give a chance to answer raises my suspetion about Tim's genuine intention.

    Ousting Rahul ghandy is top priority for international institutions because Pm Modiji is unchallengeable, impossible to get him to their agendas, so Rahul should be kicked out and more powerful character they want to put in congress in order to challenge bjp.But it's not possible Hindus will elect strong Hindu leader every time in coming elections. Sorry for eu propaganda.

    Yeaaahhh right. So what about the Queen of England and their family business.
    And that's not the way an interviewer should actually ask question. And I thought the Britishers were the best at being punctual. Shashi tharoor is a man of our country, leave aside congress or whatever. So, when our own people clap hands at this interview that shows our problem.
    I mean, we shouldnt forget this guy slammed the Britishers for their colonosation and left them scarred.
