Thank you so much for this beautiful lesson. My husband’s 3rd great grandfather was shot in the neck at the battle of Crooked River and when his wife got to him he was on a cot next to David Patten, paralyzed from the neck down. He eventually recovered enough that he was called to be the 1st bishop of the Salt Lake 19th Ward. The trials and persecutions that they suffered were severe but she always found the blessings and knew that no matter what God was with them. Her example has strengthened me through my trials and It will be an honor to meet them someday.

Speaking of trials and adversity: In the end, there will be those who will curse God for putting them through it, and there will be those who will thank and praise God for getting them through it. e.g. Nephi vs Laman and Lemual.
    Great video, thanks Jared.

We cannot thank you enough for all the time you put into these videos and podcasts! You have such a gift of speaking, of teaching and of bringing the spirit into our homes. The sacrifices you make in taking the time to add photos, quotes, highlight scriptures is so appreciated!! I found you last year during the Book of Mormon study and ever since, I have listened to you every day, almost all day long. My husband, who is so into sports, has actually turned off football games and asks to listen to a Jared Halverson podcast. Even as we fall asleep. He puts it this way…. If you can’t fall asleep, at least you are learning something, not just laying there! Thank you Brother Jared. We pray for you and your family always!🙏💞

Thank you for your powerful testimony of Joseph Smith, and your desire to be one of his "people," never turned away by the testimony of traitors. It seems more and more of the people around me, many loved ones, are listening and accepting the false and hollow "testimonies" that abound. Your testimony brought tears, strength, and the witness of the Spirit that I needed. I also appreciated Richard Bushman's quote when confronted with scorn: "When I live the kind of life that the Gospel restored through Joseph Smith teaches me how to live, I like the kind of person I'm becoming." Beautiful! 1:54:00 - 1:59:25

I love the the way you love your children and your wife, I saw a glimpse of that today I wish my parents would have loved me that way so I could have passed it to my children! I don't think they knew how, I know I didn't know how, but the Lord is showing through you and others! Mostly by Him and what He has done in the lives of others. God bless you and your family!

At 154:10 Brother Halverson begins discussing section 122, which quickly leads to his sharing his deep gratitude and loyalty to Joseph Smith. Earlier Brother H mentioned he studies anti-Mormon literature. Many young people who do that leave the church and turn to atheism! I’m sure we all grieve for loved ones and friends who have gone down that path. Thank you Brother H for your hope and unshaken testimony. Thank you for helping me realize my own debt of gratitude to Joseph.
I almost chose not to listen this week. I still struggle with past trials I did not handle well and wanted to quickly skim these sections. I’m old enough to know that when I want to avoid spiritual things, the adversary is working on me. So I listened. My faith has instead been bolstered as the Spirit has clarified truth. Thank you Brother H!

    • @VolleyballMama
      @VolleyballMama 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I caught that too and thought it was a little strange. But maybe he studies anti-Mormon stuff so that he’s more ready to defend the Gospel?? For me personally I feel horrible looking at Anti-Mormon stuff because it feels evil and yucky and that alone I stay away from it.

That you take the time to share these lessons with us. And help me have a better understanding of the Doctrine and Covenants, but also the Book of Mormon. 1:20:00 the difference between being ordained to the priesthood, and the Power of the priesthood. That touched my heart and makes every trial worth it for the lessons learned and faith that can be grown. I haven’t commented much, but your lessons always lift me, teach me, and bring me joy. Thank you isn’t enough. They way you tied Joseph’s trials to our personal trials… teaching that God is with us in our trials, answering the question where art thou… exactly where He needs to be…. that was powerful mastery teaching and testifying. You hit a home run. Totally inspired. I loved it.

Been listening yesterday and today, and it has given me comfort and a measure of peace! My precious niece is in the process of going to the other side of the veil. My heart has been breaking. She is only 47, has three daughters still at home. One they’ve brought from her mission so she could see her mom. It’s hard to realize this is the Lords timing when the hurt is so real! I know of Christ’s suffering for us in the garden and on the cross, and am so grateful for that. Then your lesson on all Joseph Smith went through! I can’t wait to meet both of them and let them know of my gratitude, not only for their suffering, but for their everlasting truths which they taught us! The Gospel means everything to me! Thanks for helping me to still attend institute through the miracle of media! I had taken institute for 45 years, but am now in an assisted living facility, so your lessons and other teachers have meant everything to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Again and again throughout your classes, I witness the orchestrations of heaven in reinforcing to my mind and heart tenderly merciful and pointed evidences of God's hand in working ALL things together for my good and for my beloved son's sake. Yes, I am abundantly and ruchly tutored and strengthened by the historical perspectives you teach so knowledgeably and insightfully, yet it is your witness of the spirit in your own life that speaks tomes to my soul. As I listened today while trying to clean up after a week's worth of dishes collecting in the midst of two little time a scripture that has remained over at least a couple of years on my windowsill as part of a collection that can be changed each day, I was turned to considerate again and again as you described various truths in the lesson and the thought came to me that I have not changed it because it is critical for me to know that and so when you quoted it halfway through the lesson 1 Corinthians 2:9 my heart was filled to overflowing in gratitude for your diligence and the love and commitment to share the doctrines and truths which you have so determinedly researched and in which you have been so well tutored by the power of the Holy Ghost. I feel such deep gratitude not only for you but for your family for sharing you with us. Angels all around you and blessings on the humble and unselfish heads of you and yours!

Oh How I love this section and your added insights! When I actually went to visit Liberty Jail I did not expect the power of the spirit to pour out upon me so heavily that I couldn’t step into the room without taking off my shoes, quite literally. I took one step and then went to my knees to unlace my boots as I sat and was taught by the Lord’s Spirit and the spirit that lingers by the power of Virtuous, Charitable men in prison seeking Comfort thru trial and suffering. I have my own personal witness of Christ’s divinity and that this direction and counsel from verse 34-46 is for ALL who desire it. 1:16:00 -1:53:00 is putting into words so much of what I felt confirmed at the time.
“If I Know I’m worthy of the Holy Ghost and I love the people… then why should I fear?”
It’s VIRTUE that supplies our thoughts, CHARITY to help others and faith to be able to endure all infirmities God sees fit to Strengthen us with. Thank You, as always, for your gift of time and years of seeking inspiration.❤️

May I add the following timestamps to those already suggested:
16:26 Joseph Smith's feelings upon being separated from the Saints and his family (Quoting Paul, 2 Corinthians 4:9)
    20:46 - 23:45 Our Heavenly Father's Divine Restraint
30:22 He sometimes calms the storm, and other times, the sailor
35:10 - 36:20 Keep the commandments and prosper - only half the story (we need an eternal perspective)
42:33 - 47:04 Joseph Smith: sin vs obedience, & the hypocrisy of his accusers.
50:59 - 52:40 Posterity cursed not for, but by sin (so grateful to Bro. Halverson for clarifying this point)
54:47 Isaiah 40:1 "Comfort ye my people"
56:38 There is no escaping justice
57:50 - 1:04:28 Minds must be stretched (through communing with God) - knowledge given to Joseph Smith during the dispensation of the fulness of times (100% worth listening to & pondering for some time!)
1:04:29 - 1:05:36 "While most of our suffering is self-inflicted, some is caused by or permitted by God. This sobering reality calls for deep submissiveness, especially when God does not remove the cup from us. In such circumstances, when reminded about the premortal shouting for joy as this life's plan was unfolded (Job 38:7), we can perhaps be pardoned if, in some moments, we wonder what all the shouting was about."
-- Elder Neal A. Maxwell, "Willing to Submit", Ensign, May 1985
1:09:26 "Redemptive Turbulence". As Bro. Halverson points out, "if there's a refiner's fire to burn out impurities, there are also rolling waters to make us pure"
1:18:16 - 1:21:49 The Analogy of the Vacuum Cleaner! Priesthood. authority vs priesthood power. From 1:21:49, an example of this.
1:30:30 Christ-like attributes and qualities of a leader
1:36:28 Heaven's guide to discipline! (for us grownups too) Correcting, at the right time, clearly
1:46:09 Being worthy of the Holy Ghost + love for those we serve = confidence in a calling
1:56:06 "the truth that led me to the right kind of life" Richard Bushman
2:05:26 He may not prevent the bad things but will prepare us against them 1Nephi Ch.17, v13
2:07:15 Trails bring us closer to the Saviour, and more like Him.
    2:07:28 Romans 2:28
    2:11:51 - 2:12:33 Words of reassurance
    2:19:18 contentdm.lib.byu.edu/digital/collection/rsc/id/43904
2:24:33 - 2:25:07 Our lives without the Gospel
2:30:15 "How can you help bring about this restoration of morality in our day and help preserve religious freedom? First, be a righteous example. You must not be in camouflage as to who you are and what you believe." Elder Quentin L. Cook: "The Restoration of Morality and Religious Freedom"
2:31:01 "Aim for the LDS temple"!
2:34:54 "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass" Alma 37:6
2:35:46 - 2:36:30 verse 16 - during a storm, small things can keep us facing into the wind and prevent us from capsizing.
2:39:45 Excerpts from the rest of the letter - I love that Bro. Halverson shared these extras with us.

I kept waiting for a time stamp, but I can’t give one. It was all-every whit-superb, filled with the spirit for those who will hear and feel. Thank you! Now, my two cents worth, if the D&C were a novel, these sections would be the climax and the resolution of the story. If Carthage is the tragedy, it is Liberty that makes the tragedy meaningful, and takes the story out of the classic Greek tragedy. It was not any character flaw in Joseph that caused or defined the tragedy, but similar to Christ, in the tragedy was Joseph‘a triumph.

He is okay now, but what got him through it all was YOU. Your help, understanding, testimony and explaining the scriptures to him is what got him through it. He told me that with Jared's help and giving all to the Lord I let him guide me where every he wants me, "my fear left me and will leave it in God's hands". Those fires will do it. Like thousands of others, my sister lost her house in CA fire 3 yrs ago and her husband had a stroke at the same time. She we 77 yrs old. The first time the fire came through in the 70's it went around her house and didn't touch it--why? Described it as a wall of fire that would not approach. Because her large home was a haven for so many others she housed there--teenagers, divorcees, emotionally challenged, It was consecrated to Him. She learned a year after the 2nd fire why the Lord didn't spare her house , "I'd ask the Lord to burn my house in order to be able to help my family the way I have been doing now." All sorts of reasons why things go as they do.

Endure valiantly FOR the the gospel of Jesus Christ. And Jared's comments following are profound to me. This incredibly powerful clarification an addition to the way of the Lords teaching line upon line...if you first learn to endure valiantly IN the Gospel this scripture holds the step to take after you can handle that precept.
Now endure valiantly FOR the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

2:44 Elder Neal A. Maxwell - perspectives - “Yes, Armageddon is ahead but so is Adam-on-di-omen.”
I didn’t catch the time stamp (but around 2:00) there was a meaningful comment about the severity of circumstances for the souls unredeemed without having the restored gospel and how that issue surpasses even the adversity, heartbreak and woes, as awful as they were, for the Saints who lost so much and suffered persecutions one after another.
When we stop to consider what is in store for those who don’t have the opportunity for more truth in their life it does put somethings into perspective. I can’t imagine what it would entail to personally pay for my sins in the hereafter, and in full. To have not had the opportunity to hear of the Savior and the plan would be all the more grievous.
God knows we are in well over our heads with the business of mortality and add to that living in a world becoming even more fallen. He will lead us along. I love these words from President Russell M Nelson, “ …the destination is serene and secure.” Love God. Let Him prevail.

1:58:00 I loved your testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith in the middle of your lesson. Powerful! I LOVE the Prophet Joseph Smith and I also want to be considered one of "Joseph's Boys" and one of his trusted friends here in this day, and I will stand by him as well as by our Savior, of whom he testified! We named our 5th child's middle name Joseph (Philip Joseph) and both me and my wife feel like if our next is another boy (we're expecting number 6, yay!!) that we will use his name again but for our child's first name, in honor of Brother Joseph.

verse 37 Succinctly explained (of course) @ 1:19:23. Back, back in the day, Hugh Nibley walked into the office where we both worked and said, "the priesthood is an onerous burden." I always wondered what he meant and should have asked.... years later found it in Nibley's own talk on the priesthood and on this section--it was Joseph Smith. This: "One cannot exercise any power of the priesthood in any degree of unrighteousness--this in full recognition of the fact that 'it is the nature of almost all men' to do that very thing as soon as they think they have power and authority. This leaves a few humble, unpretentious, and unworldly people as the sole holders of a valid priesthood. It is the 'few humble followers of Christ' who are the strength of the Church throughout much of the Book of Mormon history." "...FEW HUMBLE FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST WHO ARE THE STRENGTH OF THE CHURCH..." Wow. Find this by googling a line from above; wish I could put the link.

My son is an Atheist. I listened carefully to all you said. I’m trying to have Hope and I’m struggling with it. His future looks bleak. I go from moments of faith to massive anxiety to hopefulness and then kindly forgetfulness as I serve others. But the pain never goes away. I feel grief on a level I never knew existed.

I sure do hope that man listened to the Manti temple president. This problem is real and some women suffer quietly by
demand of their husbands. I know a woman who lives in this situation and her husband is kind to everyone but a bear to
the family at home. It is heartbreaking, but dare she do anything? no, he won't tolerate that as she did try once; so she
just keeps quiet now. When I see a man mistreating his wife (or a wife doing the same to her husband), I cringe and want
to cry out stop, stop, be loving be kind.

I have in my notes of D&C 123:5, taken from a class given by Brother Calvin Serphens, the comment. “This shows the intelligence of Joseph Smith. We should never teach that Joseph Smith was not learned, considering the language used in this revelation. Even though he was not well educated in the standards of the world, he was a brilliant man. His knowledge was so great that it took heavenly beings to tutor him.
    Love your insights
