GoPro Hero4 Silver vs Sony Action Cam Mini vs Replay XD Prime X vs Kodak SP1

- Some recent comparison footage for Gizmodo.
Note: The reason we used the Hero4 Silver instead of the Black is because we were shooting at 1080p 30fps, and at that frame rate/resolution, the Black and the Silver are literally indistinguishable. They have the same exact optics and the same exact sensor. The Black just has a better processor which allows it to achieve higher frame rates. You can see the Black's 4K 30fps and 1080p 120fps in some of my other recent videos.
Mate? this has to be THE best review I've come across. You've done a Fab job in showing the comparison regarding the different qualities in each camera. For me? I am sold completely on the Kodak, soo mcuh that I'm gonna check right now how much it is. Thanks
I own the Kodak SP1, this is the first TH-cam comparison I have seen. I thought it faired very well with the exception of the low light test, especially for half the price of the gopro.
Are all these camera's taken right out of the box? That would help make everything more consistent with the reviews and would eliminate the discrepency for the settings
Overall Kodak kicks the others all over the place. Wow, Kodak still makes great products! Wonder how battery life, etc is on Kodak.

+mattster197 take a look at the first shot. clouds are not visible at all on the Kodak while on the gopro they are. the colors on the gopro are flat so they will not look as good until post edited. the Kodak is higher in saturation and higher in contrast.
All I have to say is ALL the TV shows use the HD gopro and it looks just like their professional cameras...enough said.
Adjust the settings on the Action cam for Godsake. 170 degree 1080p wide angle mode, along with the vivid color setting. This looks like it was shot at 120 degree mode, in 720p which is basic, not HD at all when it gets uploaded and stretched for wider viewing. Either adjust it from your smart phone, or the live view remote. Obviously, you didn't set it up. I'm assuming you got only the camera, and not the remote.
Kodak has best lighted video. GoPro has best low light video.

Thank you for this video. I am planning on buying a used action cam and this is by far one of the best comparison videos I've seen!
I am torn between a GoPro Hero 4 and a ReplayXD PrimeX but I'm leaning towards the GoPro for a couple reasons : Better built in Audio, Pretty decent image quality, good lowlight, wifi control.
I really want to match the nice natural 120 degree FOV found on the PrimeX... Is it possible to nail the settings on the Hero 4 so that it has a natural / realistic Field of view? I know you can adjust field of view between wide, medium, and narrow or something like that - but my question is do any of them look natural instead of all fish eyed.
I might still get a replay later, but my first purchase will be a GoPro I think unless I can't get a natural field of view out of it.

Your GoPro Colors seem waaaaay too flat for the standard normal settings. Do you have the exact setting the camera was on?

It appears you left the windbreaker on the Prime X hence the reduced sound levels. You would get the same result if you left the GoPro in the case. When doing tests between cameras they should be set up as similar as possible to compare results. Leaving the mic covered on one and not the other is misleading.
Sony has greenish sky colors and the both the Sony and Kodak are pretty ordinary underwater.
I do drifting event coverage & mount my cameras to cars & poles for out of car shots. I use Gopro & SJ4000 now. Looking to upgrade to ReplayXD. Do you think that's my best option? I've already smashed 2 cameras,need something strong,lightweight & good quality.

I have been going thru so many websites and videos... all the sound and videos qualities differs on the one who mount the video... I almost believed in the Sony AS25 (if I remember well the model), but another video after show how bad was the quality....
Now, in France, people tends to say that Nikon SP1 is the most interesting for its price (camera+accessories) for 219€. But my problem is with the stabilizer... No website really mention that problem, but when I watch all the videos, the camera view tends to be flinched... and they the recorder walk, the camera is so unstable.
Do you know any solution to fill that problem? (the sound and the video qualities are I would say very good! even if it adds a little more light and color to the reality haha)
I am not sure the accessories will help with the stabilizer problem.

Not an expert on the subject, one thing I didn't hear mentioned in the below reviews is the field of view? (width), I own a hero3+ I haven't used for a while and I had a problem with the very wide angle lens it has distorting the images in a circular like fashion, that's why I started looking on what else equivalent is out there that is not as wide of a lens as my hero3+, giving a more real image quality, and from what I saw, the Kodak SP1 might be it
i am trying to figure out how you got the same exact pov in the underwater shots while the fish swam in the same exact pattern in all.. if you were carrying all 4 at the same time the angles on the pov would be different. I think this is some clever editing from someone!! I call BUNK on your review!!
whats the color mode on the sony? vivid or normal?
Unfortunately I saw this video too late. I bought the Sony Action Cam Mini (HDR-AZ1) and when I saw my diving videos, all of them were blurry. I was looking for a solution and found out that there is no dive housing for this cam. Wasted money.

Hi Brent, thx a lot for this video. I'm looking for an action cam and this was the best test I've seen til now (what a pitty that you don't drive motorbikes as well ^^). I've been watchin it on a high a resolution monitor and I came to other results than some of your followers below. Ok, sound is best with Kodak, but the "automatic white Balance" removes too much of the reality. Therefore I would recommend it for indoor videos only. Outdoor GoPro and Replay XD look the same, but the sound of Replay XD is below mediocre. I go for the GoPro.
You should have bought the flat lens casing for the underwater shot for the sony one.
Bought a Sony and I'm bit disappointed. Standard housing sucks underwater and its hard to find the flat lens cover where I live, and out of water the image looks less sharp comparing to others cameras (or older models of sony). But have some features like steady shot while filming and water scene mode, that adjust the colors for underwater using.
The Kodak and the GoPro look like the choice (my opinion) Kodak also has that 360 degree camera which is quite awesome think it's called the sp360 believe there's two versions.

the audio on the replay was horrible... are you sure that's accurate?
+mattster197 I have a Replay XD mini 1080 and yes the audio is very low, but you can boost it at the setup page :)
especialy when you use the windbreaker adhesives, it thakes down quit a lot sound, but the windnoise is gone that way. This is because the Replay is a waterproof cam, and it doesn't need a special housing for diving (till sertain point that is!) :D
Right. I will use those windbreakers. I love the video quality and ease of use of the Prime X. Do you love it? currently just using it for video from a mini tripod so no noise issue with wind.
+mattster197 I must say I havn't been able to test the cam fully because I just got it (I have bought it second hand for only €40!!!) But my first test were pretty good, just at low light it's a bit less then others. BUT it has a lot more advantages against other action cams: extremely light and compact, the barrol chape is way more practical than a cube chape, the mounts are smaler than Gopro mounts, it reacts realy fast when switshing between low and bright light, great batery life (about 2 hours) and best of all, it is already waterproof, so you don't need a extra housing for the rain or even when you use it in a pool.
Offcourse it has some cons also, like, I have the Replay XD mini 1080 so it hasn't got WIFI, and offcourse there isn't a screen on it, also it's pretty expencine these days, the Prime X is like 100 USD to much in my oppinion.
I will be testing it after a few days. I will be using it for Karting (Helmet) (it's an indoor/outdoor track, thats why I needed a cam that can cope with swithing between low and bright light), also I will use it om my Freeride bike but not on my helmet (because I drive without one). I will mount it on my front shock (if possible!) or just my handlebar... And maybe even for paintball :)
I'm not sure which was best but it is pretty obvious the Sony lost in all aspects. The GoPro was the only one with decent indoor video and the others are horrific by comparison. If anything the GoPro is always a little dark but has smoother color transitions since the contrast is quite low but the Kodak is always increasing the contrast thus sharpening edges while making lighter and darker region blend their colors together.
Wow that Kodak really renders some beautiful images.

GoPro is pretty much the benchmark, the Kodak holds its own, considering the price though, Kodak is the best overall value(Price+features+included accessories).

The GoPro and the Kodak have the best color and clarity, but not sure which has the most accurate colors...
i have a gopro hero 3+ and it shoots good video but im looking to get video with it on my dirtbike helmet and its going to get hit with tree branches and things so i have to get something with a lower profile, so im probably going to buy a the replay instead of the kodak because the kodak is about the same size as my current gopro hero 3+
should use a mode modern Sony camera. the as200 is comparable to the gopro silver and has better lowlight.
The Sony had the Image Stabilizer on. This makes the video zoomed and a little soft. The Sony IS should be off for a more fair comparison.
the Sony camera seemed to have the best pickup of sound with its mic, but the Kodak camera definitely had the better picture
Theres settings to adjust the audio on the replay prime X and sounds better than the gopro

Had you asked me beforehand which would be the worst, I would have said Kodak. I thought the Kodak was the best of the four. In all categories.
in the first shot the Replay looks amazing but then I seen some guy walking down on sidewalk and he looked like a lagging CoD player.
It is like you have to have all four so you have the right one to use at the right moment.
want to get a gopro 4 because i play paintball but my friedn keep on telling me NO TO DO IT because its too expensive and hes go t a replay cam

The Gopros wont help you much with paintballing, Go for the Sony, it has the image stabilization and a 170 degree wide angle. Plus its half the cost of the GoPro Cameras

I have been researching a lot and well I can honestly say Go pro is better, but Kodak is waaaay cheaper and for that reason, Kodak is the best option if you are on a budget.
Should use the flat lens for the sony for underwater..

Talk about a gross misrepresentation of the Sony. Shot in flat color mode with the wrong field of view option, not using underwater mode, and using AVCH in low light instead of MP4. And no example of the steady shot feature. Tsk tsk tsk.
CGphotoOp Kodak has none of those options and produce way better result. So, yes, I went with Kodak.

Sony, forget it. There are so many things wrong with the mini too much to mention. Kodak? Looks like a toy & something from the 70s. I would spend the extra money & get the best. GoPro. But i do not like their new way of hooking up to a comp.
A dcim icon no longer pops up on desktop for viewing. You have to load 1st before you can even view it. Wtf. Very annoying. But you can always pop out the sd into a reader...

Not sure what you did to the Sony images to make them look so bad. I have the Sony and it looks nothing like that, images are sharpe and colours way more vivid. Make me wonder about random TH-cam comparisions like this. Will stick to proper sites like the review by MTBR for 2015 which ranked the Sony level with the Gopro 4 Silver which is $150 more.

The sony has a curved lens. When you put it in the water the images get blurred - this is true of any camera with a curved lens. If you put it in a case so the water does not come in direct contact with the lens, then the images will be crisp and clear - provided of course, the case has a flat surface. My guess is that these videos were shot without using any waterproof cases. But don't think that is completely correct since the gopro, to my knowledge, is not waterproof and needs a waterproof case before it can go in the water. So slightly unfair to the Sony. But i have to say, if you advertise that a camera is waterproof (upto whatever depth), it should take crisp pictures and not lose clarity the moment it enters the water. The waterproof rating on many of these cameras fools people into believing that you can take under water videos. In reality, it just means that if you drop it in water it will survive without water damage upto the advertised depth.

i would get a go pro but the design is not for me the replay torpedo design makes more sense to me specially for an action camera i don't know how long go pro is gonna stick to that ugly square design

Here's a comparison done by a pro photographer rather than a staff writer - worth looking at if only for the wild test-helmet pictures. He rates the Sony as a knockout winner (though he's testing the Gen3 GoPro).
