Sony X3000 vs Gopro 11: Can Gopro Finally Win?

- Sony x3000 was released way back in 2016, and at the time, although marketed as an action camera, those who vlogged new this was the best vlogging camera of its time. It destroyed the Gopro 6 at the time. Then the Gopro 7 came out with hypersmooth stabilization, and while it was nice, it only worked in good light, whereas Sony had BOSS optical stabe that worked regardless of light. With it's low megapixel sensor it was superior in low light and just had a more natural look instead of Gopro's HDR fakeness.
Gopro 8 and 9 were very glitchy, and while the specs were starting to pass the X3000's, Sony still had many advantages like built in mic jack, smaller size, better form factor, more reliable, recorded 1 single file instead of splits, natural colours, more natural looking stabilization etc. It really was a toss up. Well, in 2023 has the Gopro 11 finally caught up? Open gate, 10 bit, 4k 120p, 2.7k 240p. On paper Gopro wins... or does it?

X3000 still winning for me. I bought it because of you, I have a DJI Osmo Action (first release) and I still reach for the X3000. Its easier to hold and manage.
Street crossing, angry dad walk and the dance! Pure gold! The Sony X3000 still looks better imo, The colours on the GoPro look yellowed! Yes the stabilization on the GoPro is better, but the Sony is not that bad to watch. The sky on the Sony looks great! Thanks for the comparison.
I still use my x3000 for every trail ride winter and summer and it’s bulletproof. I bought a DJI Action 3 which I think is better than the Hero 11 after updates, but if I have to choose between a little less better colour and resolution of the Sony over the risk of losing or corrupt files of the GoPro, I’ll take Sony any day. The external mic quality is better on Sony than GoPro and DJI and the Sony files are way more manageable.but I am noticing my Sony is a tad soft focus and fear it is only a short matter of time before I a, forced to use my Action3
I liked the image on the right more and was sure that the left was going to be the x3000. Surprised how well that camera continues to hold up. (Watching on a phone though)

I have the GoPro Hero 12 Black but the Sony FDR-X3000 is still superior in many ways.
FDR-X3000 advantages
Image stabilization works just as good regardless of lighting conditions (GoPro sucks at night and sunset)
Superior reliability (GoPro refuses to fix reliability issues year after year)
No lag (the GoPro menu has lag and everything else on the GoPro has lag too, glitches happen as well)
Faster boot up (turns on and records significantly faster than the GoPro)
Settings can be changed even if camera is wet since it has buttons
Much better color science that looks more natural (the GoPro sometimes makes things look ridiculous in strong sunlight)
Better quality lens and sharper video
Lens flare is also much nicer and looks more like a proper camera
Better audio quality and has a wired microphone input BUILT IN
Has a more of a camera look than an action camera look
Amazing battery life and batteries are easier to change. All their action cameras use the same battery too.
The list goes on. The GoPro is great at some things but REALLY sucks at other things.
@johnfoley4023 I haven't had any issues with mine. Take your GoPro out at night and see how it does.
@johnfoley4023 If I moved my hero 12 all over it would make some people sick too. The camera man is important and no image stabilization can fix that. I still reach for the Sony a lot though since it has a lot of advantages of its own. Stabilization in low light is one of many.

I've been using x3000 for a long time and still prefer it even over gopro 11, it's a very versatile vlogging camera according to my experience.
The Gopro has shadow lift. If you do a shadow lift on the Sony in post, I think the image would beat the Gopro. Not sure why the Gopro has a yellow tint, either.
That Sony looks good and still seems to have sharper focus then GoPro at that close range.
Is pink eye making you see yellow?. The GP11 was yellow-tinted.

I have the Sony and GoPro 12. The optical image stabilization of the Sony crushes the GoPro when the sun starts going down.
that good old sony, compared to the gopro, I must say its sad seeing how little progress has been made over such a long amount of time

I was hoping with all my heart that the x3000 was the left….but it wasn’t. Surprised! Our auto exposure seems to work a bit better than we saw here. That said, GP for the overall win (but go OSMO Action 3 today?). Still, we use our 3000 all the time and it does a great job; stab isn’t quite as good as our GoPro (we are still at 8, it looks good, but freezes often) but it always works, mic is great for ‘vlogging” and rarely needs a back up (we often use the Sony as a back up for audio). And did we note: it always works!! I think if Sony did an update, they likely would lose all their sales of other camera supposedly designed for vloggers. Nice comparison! Still love the Sony, but think of it more like a mini camcorder rather than an action camera. At least thats how we tend to use it.
"more of a mini camcorder" - that is a very insightful observation. I had never thought about it like that before, and yet it is true, a mini companion for a larger video camera, whether mirrorless or camcorder.
Its shape always made it a poor action camera. True that it is a great shape for mounting on the side of a helmet, but less good than GoPro for chest mounts and many other ways we tend to use a GoPro, both Hero and Session.
That is how I use mine.

I own a X3000 and GP10, the Sony is the best walk about camera (with a bit of foam held over the mic with an elastic band) very discrete and no one pays you any attention, but I pull the GoPro out if it's going to get wet etc as they can both fit in a jacket pocket...I've now bought a Panny G9, so blending all 3 styles into one vlog will be fun, especially sound.

GoPro 11 also has 10 bit and a proper LOG format, so it will look better than the Sony X3000 with a LUT and minor color correction. Also the GoPro doesn't suffer from jagged lines like the X3000. If you don't want to do any of that though the Sony does look more pleasing out the camera. I also do prefer the slightly softer image the GoPro has. Seems a tiny bit more "cinematic"
x3000 still the king by far. The digital stabe on the new action cameras look too unrealistic so you are drawn into it being a camera (not natural to watch) As for all that in low light... totally falls apart.
Nice comparison! I still would have a hard time choosing between them though. I like them both.
My short comment: Colors are times better on Sony, but the pciture detail and dynamic range goes to GOPRO hands down, just on gopro footage do 2 clicks down on printerlights in Davinci. And boom you got a winner! Cheers from Bulgaria, not Bolivia! lol

i have one of the x3000 but not sure of the other settings like for like mp4 or 360?
Check out the GoPro Labs firmware for your Hero 11. You can enable 10-bit F-LOG, 200Mbps bitrate, on-screen Histogram, and DaVinci/Premiere Pro proxies that are generated in-camera. Then you can just treat the footage like any mirrorless camera in post and get some incredible looking footage from the GoPro with your usual workflow.
I like the x3000 most scenarios. More natural pleasing footage. Go pro is something artificial in the footage that you feel it. I would get an x3000 as much can be available to buy. That's a legendary camera.

I'm debating whether to sell my Sony X3000 or not. I've been using it for years, and it has helped me capture some really good videos. The downsides include:
- It lacks a display
- It doesn't have a box-style design, which can sometimes be inconvenient
- 4K videos are saved in the XVAC format, which cannot be downloaded directly to my phone

Can you sync the camcorder to an iPhone so that you can preview what the camcorder can see? I’d plan on putting one of theee on a 7ft tripod to record my son playing goalie for soccer.
I used to use the Sony app with the x3000 to do that. Not sure if the modern app works, or how far away it will work.
I think the filters you have on muddy up the image.
The X3000 over all has the best image. It seems to need better lighting than the gopro but the gopro has a weird color shift and it makes the sky look overcast in comparison.
To my ears the gopro had better audio, at times muddied in comparison but over all more direct. The X3000 was catching more of the ambient sounds. However without the abrupt changes between both cameras, I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
Choosing between the two, I'd take the Sony.
Where to buy Sony fdr x3000 in India
Can you do just some simple color grading with both to see how they would look for everyday use? I always play with gamma and brightness just go get it looking good. Modern cameras are trying to do this in real time.
As someone who watches content in 1080p, I'm amazed how much better the Sony looked. Also the sky was better. GoPro might have a slight edge when it comes to stabe and it is sharper, but the Sony is still king IMO.

The X3000 image and colors are better IMO, wish they weren't so expensive to get. I'm using the pocket 3, but that as you know has its own challenges.
This was good. It all comes down to your needs. I had the Sony HDR-AS15 until it fell in the water, unprotected. It was a great camera. I'm buying another Sony to replace it. Good, funny video!

I could tell at the beginning ever so slighly from the stabilization. But I found myself hunting for an X3000 because it does look very good.
The GoPro has better dynamic range and I notice the higher bitrate, but it has a bit too much of a camcorder look and the colours are weird. Overall I like the look of the X3000 better for vlogging.

NOW that I've watched this amazing comparo to 2016 technology, sad to say, that damn GoPro 11 wins...
I have the Sony, and seeing this comparison did not encourage me to run out and buy something new.
The lenses also have much less distortion. (Almost zero). Sony also has stabilization which keeps details in the image. Gopro removes too much detail in the image when things move a lot (MTB for example)
On the other hand, the dynamic range of the GoPro is incredible. Don't forget that the Sony is 10 years old now (I think)
Kind of a tony hinchcliffe meets clint howard type. Would make a decent b-movie scifi / horror series minor character role. Oh yeah, this was helpful making a decision. X3000 with post-processing color correction. Wish more had the optical stabilization method and zeiss lens. Harald Baldr cam wins.
I prefer sony over gopro, in a group 5 days motorcycle ride all of my friends gopros died or heated up but sony was standing still till end of the day.... Awesome build quality and performance. This one i got for 250$ used but i would say its worth.
Until now the go pro company they still didn’t fix this issue over heating
But what about the audio? What also sets apart the Sony is simply the audio which is always better when the camera is not waterproof.

Wild fires in Canada..that watering can you picked up which was next to a fire hydrant is to be used in emergencies only. Watering your apartment house plants does dot qualify as an emergency. If you took it return it immediately!
I’ll never get rid of my X3000, and I have the optional remote screen for mine. I can probably sell it for what I paid for it. The 1080 on the Sony looks fantastic, no need to shoot in 4K. But you still need a GoPro for action sports, so I have both. For vlogging, when you are in the video, the X3000 wins. For action sports, the GoPro wins. The X3000 goes up in value, where you can’t even give away a GoPro 6 or older.
Haven't found out which is which yet, but the image on the left has weird skin colours but a clearer image and a better gamma curve than the image on the right, which is probably the GoPro and has usable skin colours

You made a mistake when you got rid of the Action 3... that was a way better camera. Had better battery life, less glitchy, didn't need a giant media mod just to connect a microphone.

Are you comparing the FDR x3000's digital stabilization + optical stabilization option with the GoPro 11's digital stabilization, or are you comparing just the SonyFDR x3000's optical stabilization with GoPro 11's digital stabilization?

90% of the action camera tests are not in action, it is a slow walk. The real strength of a camera is the STABILIZER. Everyone looks at slow motion and says wow, but the top stabilizers are ...1. gopo12 2. DJI Ac4, 3. Insta and 4. Akaso Brave.

How recently are you talking? When I got my action cam the image stabilisation was a lot better on the Sony. At least riding dirt bikes it was
@@Coopsoldman that's true. Everyone caught up! They are all great now, dji, insta360, and of course gopro. The stabilization on all the action cams are great. Now if Sony, Canon and Fuji could figure out how to bring that stabilization to full frame cameras.

Is that GP11 defective? Most of the footage was garbage! It had a weird yellow/green cast and made the colours look terrible. The X3000 kicked its butt! Much better colour and contrast.

Nothing is perfect. The menus, the inconvenient shape, and the poor hyperlapse, make the Sony a bad choice in some ways, BUT the better look of the stabilization, the mic jack, and the colors and overall image quality makes the Sony a stand-out first choice. GoPro colors have improved. Previous generation they were too orange, but alongside the Sony we see that they are too yellow. Sure they expose the face well, but that comes at the expense of the background, with washed out skies compared to the Sony.
The Sony is so good, they really need to develop an X4000. There is a loyal base of X3000 fans who will upgrade if there is an improved model to upgrade to.
The Sony looks better, the colors look nicer, the texture of the road shows the details which are washed out in the GoPro.

Sony's may be of a "lower" resolution, but it produces a sharper picture. Look at the 240 fps comparison.
