That has got to be the most shocking display of effortless piano technique in human history. And of course he retains the delicate romantic nature of Liszt in all its splendid glory.
Can't agree more. This is by far the most impressive interpretation of much anything I've heard in my life. The interpretation is flawless, not just the technique. Yunchan Lim and Vikingur Olafsson are my current 2 favorite pianists. (With Charles-Richard Hamelin especially since he comes from here!).
The consistency is just astounding. This is obviously an impossible piece just to play at all, but to play it with this level of precision is unparalleled. Listen from 30s-45s on the right hand. Every note is *exactly* the same duration and volume. Now look up recordings of any other great pianist playing this piece and listen to the same section. They all sound great of course; they're amazing pianists playing something very few people can play. But if you listen closely, all of them have some inconsistencies. Notes played slightly louder or softer, notes held a touch longer or a note here and there made slightly staccato. Come back here and listen again, then go back there and listen. It'll stick out more and more, and it'll become apparent that this isn't just better, it's fully 2-3 standard deviations better than anyone else on the planet. What this guy does is inhuman.
Pogorelich had many errors and lack clarity. Kissin played Feux Follets better than anyone. But Lim is close. And Kissin never played all of them. Lim played ALL of consecutively, Lim just set a new standard for these études that should be recorded by a major label immediately!!
First, let me remind you that this is a competition, and as we all know, it's not easy to perform at 100% of your ability in a competitive setting. Pressure, nerves, anxiety, and other factors can come into play. Nevertheless, in the semifinals, he gave an incredible performance, playing all 12 transcendental etudes in one go, which is unprecedented! His technique of playing complex notes, intentionally designed to be difficult, with precise timing was truly impressive. He demonstrated it brilliantly, bravo! While these skills are impressive in and of themselves, it is his unique interpretation and creativity (wit) that sets him apart. Yunchan smiled as he watched the feux follets he created dance across the keys. What a great performance!
AND he was performing on barely any sleep too as he was practicing day and night! He said he felt he didn’t perform these anywhere near as good as in the practice room. The guy is an absolute monster.
I attended TCU many years ago and heard a friend work on this piece for something like two years before she could play it well. These études are monstrous in their difficulty. Mr. Lim brings to the music a characteristic which Liszt himself described as part of his own personality: his "impudence." Having completely mastered every difficulty and addressing the music unencumbered, he brings off the sparkle, clarity, and glittering passagework with ease, with a tickling swagger I have heard from no one else. I doubt that I shall ever hear the equal to his Liszt interpretations anytime soon. A truly astounding young man to have reached the heights so early in his life.
We can only hope his career and artistry grows ever higher 😊 Yunchan Lim is exactly what the classical piano world needs right now… he already has all the makings of an all time great
I regret that my first exposure to this performance came months after it had occurred. What I would have given to be casually watching this, only to have my hair set on fire there in the moment.......... I'm surprised we don't hear spontaneous incredulous laughter from the audience. This performance is nearly inhuman.
Imagine how shocked Liszt would be if he saw this guy play. A fresh adult tearing through Liszt’s twelve transcendental etudes like it’s nothing. Yun Chad Lim
It in no way diminishes Liszt to acknowledge that at 18, he probably wasn't quite as good as what we see from Lim. But of course that's unfair, since the hardest piano piece in existence in 1829 was Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata. The Hammerklavier is very, very hard. This etude is considerably harder.
@@herrbrahms I think Liszt had written this piece already at younger age as Yunchan is here. Not in the final version, no. But still. He was a prodigee, taught himself reading and writing notes and was a superstar of the 19th century.

How they follow an erratic willowisp and secretly watch from the shadows how the witches dance and fly around with their brooms. This piano presentation shows it soo good as if I am with them. Beyond god level and from such a humble young man , 18 years old. How is this possible ? I hope one-day to be able to listen to Yunchan play live from a front row seat.
Mainly, this very difficult Liszt transcendental etude focuses on these emphases: 1. Mastery of different rhythms in the right hand. 2. Double trill passages in the right hand. 3. Great and wide "leggiero" leaps in the left hand involving grace note and note at the top and the bass line at the bottom in very fast motion.
Every note was pristine, with clarity in abundance. The melodies were always pronounced perfectly. The speed only enhanced the beauty. This is wonderful! It is as good as Trifonov. That was very hard for me to write!
