Remember what you were doing at the tender age of 18? Probably not taking home a gold medal from a major piano competition. Two years ago, when the South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim was only 18, he won the storied Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Ever since, we’ve been asking him to play at our Tiny Desk. Lim was the youngest ever to win the Cliburn, and one of his performances there has been viewed more than 16 million times on TH-cam.
Simply put, Lim became an overnight sensation. And it’s easy to see why in these deeply considered performances. Even though he was under the weather -- explaining to our audience why his voice was weak -- you could never tell by his powerful command of every note, making our trusty upright sound like a 9-foot grand piano.
Listen for the deliciously strummed chords in Liszt’s Petrarca Sonetto, where, near the end, he rings a bell of two notes high on the keyboard and leaves them suspended in midair. Lim is celebrated for his finger twisting virtuosity, but it’s this kind of poetic dynamic control that astonishes.
Tchaikovsky is a personal favorite. Lim summons thunder in a stormy passage of the snack-sized Moment lyrique, and follows with “October” (from the cycle The Seasons) where he conjures shades of lambent autumn light, taking great care to dab and mix colors like a painter.
It’s easy to fall under the spell of Yunchan Lim’s playing. And we’re lucky, because at just age 20 Lim will be enchanting listeners for a long time.

I discovered Yunchan Lim this year. His talent is nothing less than emmense. It is not only his phenominal dexterity, agility and precision it is also his heart. Through him the music actually speaks.

Thank you for having Yunchan Lim on Tiny Desk. I can't believe that small upright sounds so amazing. I can't stop listening to his music.
Yunchan mentioned in one of his interviews that he prefers to play the music in a casual setting with giggles and claps. Big thanks to tiny desk for sharing this precious moment. Loved every single second of it.
How often does he play on an upright piano?
For those who have to come to Tiny Desk for the first time, this piano has hosted many great musicians of all genres. These are the working offices of National Public Radio in Washington, DC. There have been huge ensembles play in this small space. This was the brainchild of the former music critics for NPR, Bob Bollen and Robin Hilton, who hosted All Songs Considered for years. It might seem like a modest space, but there is magic that has happened here.
I agree about magic
Wish this were seen for everyone coming here and wondering about the setting and its too modest an instrument.
His "October" interpretation is the best i have heard of that piece (personally for me.) (I recommend listening to all of his performances of that piece cause he plays it slightly different each time) I am so happy Tiny Desk got him to come and play so that people who do not know him are introduced to the amazing Yunchan !!
Divino!¡!!Fala com tanta calma e simplicidade, emocionante ❤❤❤❤❤
Right after winning Cliburn, he went to a hospital to give paitents free concert. He has a lot of empathy for people in need. What a great man he is!
Great talent with huge heart!
Brought tears to my eyes ngl. With how music is these days, it’s so nice to have actual talent
I really enjoyed this performance. This young man has some serious talent.
That tiny piano's totally giving off singing vibes!

People probably don’t realize how much more difficult it is to produce such a beautiful and sensitive tone out of this studio upright compared to a 9ft. Grand. Yunchan Lim succeeds brilliantly and flawlessly in every respect bringing forth the musicality of these challenging pieces.
i don't have a grand piano... that should explain why my playing is so bad !
@@rnz2363 😅 That's what I tell myself too!
Paul, I realize it, and I also appreciate his playing on this Yamaha, but still I can miss the sound of a 9ft. Grand . At the same time I enjoy enormously his playing in Tiny Desk. This piano has an interesting history. And it sounds pretty good.
@@rnz2363The musician makes the instrument, not the other way around.
@@staffanolofsson8201…when it’s properly tuned, regulated, voiced and recorded.
I'm listening to his performance endlessly as if I'm possessed.
It's fantastic!!!
This dude is so good he made me buy cds... Then CD player...
🤣 same here!
Had to get a cd player so I could listen to his Chopin Etudes CD😆🤩😍
hahah same here. he made me buy LPs.... then LP player....
Lol! I love how he made you buy the CD first even when you didn't have a CD player 😂
I find myself rewatching his interviews more than his performances. After finishing a graceful and confident performance, he glances around, gives a slightly awkward smile, and rubs his hands together. And then he begins to speak in a low voice, as if he’s writing each word. His words are unadorned, sincere, and honest. After saying what he needs to, he moves on to his next performance. The superstar who sells out Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Royal Albert Hall is a shy young man. Yet, he’s a confident and assured artist who makes an upright piano sound like a 9-foot grand.
❤A performance I don't want to wake up from!
It brings tears to my eyes~~~
The best❤
Never seen anything like this before at the Tiny Desk… insanely good
This is so amazing! Thank you, Tiny Desk. Thank you, Yunchan. Your music fills my heart and spirit.
It's extremely difficult to produce that variety of nuance, dynamics, and color on an upright piano even of good quality like this one. In fact, I've never heard it done on this level. An outstanding talent, this young man.
I'm not sure what you're getting at. We can see neither his foot pedaling nor the dampers moving inside the case, but we may fairly assume he has employed the damper pedal there deliberately to sustain a loud fuzz on his fortissimo attack of the bass octaves so they ring through the lines of the upper texture. True, it does not sound as convincing as it would on a grand piano, but his musical intent is still clear.
I can’t believe the upright piano can make amazing music sounds 🎹
I’m reading many comments about the upright piano and its difficulty. I’m not musician and I’d love someone to explain it to me, I’d really appreciate it. I only can say as someone who’s not musician that this Tiny Desk is BEAUTIFUL, out of this world. Thanks for making me discover such great artists and for allowing us to have faith in the fact that good music is not dead 🤍
It's like driving and riding in Rolls Royce, in comparison to Toy.ota.
Despite him driving the Toy.ota, he makes you feel like you're riding in Rolls Royce.
I've heard that he creates the sound he desires in a subtle and exceptional way through delicate pedaling and nuanced control of dynamics in each finger joint.
In fact, he mentioned in an interview that he sometimes spends hours on a single note to produce the sound he envisions.
Wow. Didn't expect for a classical superstar to perform at NPR tinydesk
No seria el primero. Estuvieron Daniil Trifonov, Yo-Yo Ma, Marc Andre Hamelin, Alice Sara Ott, Vikingur Olaffson, etc.
@@pedrojaguilar Igor Levit as well!
Augustin Hadelich too! 🎻
Taking notes of every name mentioned in this thread so I can check them later 🫶🏻
That tiny upright piano experienced heaven that day. Bravo. 👌💕
Oh my word this is amazing! I can listen to this all day!!
That piano must be very honoured to have Yunchan Lim as pianist.
This upright Yamaha, is it the same as with Vikingur Olafsson, Alice Sara Ott and other prominent guests? If so, Im full of admiration. Still I miss a Steinway! But it will be too big behind this tiny desk. Anyway Yunchan Lim shows that a good pianist can play on almost all pianos, if they are well tuned.
@@staffanolofsson8201yunchan lim would sound great too, even with an out of tune piano
@@staffanolofsson8201 Looks like the same piano, but it was wildly and criminally out of tune for Ott's performance. Nonetheless, I really appreciate NPR giving these incredible young classical pianists the spotlight in their Tiny Desk setting.
@@nakamichiguy I agree, music like this on Tiny Desk can get more people to like classical music! "I hope your hearts and spirits are filled with this music" says Yunchan Lim before playing October by Tchaikovsky. ❤
It's not cute to have a lame piano for pianists this good. Squeeze a parlor grand in there, come on. You put whole ensembles in the space, you can do a 6' piano with some actual tone quality and dynamic range. Come on!
NPR 에 나와줘서 너무 고마워요 진짜 가죽점퍼 입고 피아노 치는 윤찬림의 모습 진짜 초특급 힙하다!!

I was so attracted to his mesmerizing heavenly performance that I didn't see he actually was playing on a upright piano!! He made that piano's existence and purpose complete!!!
‘장인은 도구를 탓하지 않는다’의 완벽한 의인화..
Yes, you are completely right!
i wonder how long it has been since Lim played on an upright for a concert - this must have been special in its own way

I can't help but feel emotional when Yuchan plays. He goes to the heart of very piece of music he plays. It seems the composer is speaking in the most intimate terms with me as he plays. It is magical. I've never heard this sensitivity in a piano performance. This young man really is one of a kind in the best possible way. We are blessed.
I sympathize with you
lol shut up dude sounds like literally every other very good pianist. youtube comments are insane.
Piano told me an hour ago he’s extremely grateful to this man for resuscitating him. Also swore to God that he’s never been treated in so caring and honorable a way through his life.

One of the best tiny desk concerts ive ever heard. Astounding performance!
I’ve never heard an upright sound that good in my life. He is one of the best pianists in the world, there’s no doubt.
Yes, a small upright and he achieves that level of tone and touch! - wonderful talent
I’ve tended to prefer the sound of uprights in general. I find much more variety in character. Although this upright is a slight bit saloony for my liking. 😂

Just read the video description.
Mr.T.Huizenga,
(1) I like your team. That is, it was perfect in Camera Works and Sound.
(2) And I like the word " TINY". We do not have to be BIG.
(3) And I am ashamed of myself toward your question "Remember what you were doing at the tender age of 18?"
As for me, I was just a kid. Many thanks.
He is a rock star of the 21st century, just like Liszt was.

The upright piano really sounds like a grand piano. Yun Chan Lim's performance is unique and beautiful.👏👏👏🫶🫶🫶
Thank you to Tiny Desk for inviting such a wonderful pianist.
Besides sounding wonderful as only Yunchan can do, I am curious what kind of piano he is playing. It sounds ths same as a grand piano! Actually, I just saw it is a Yamaha. Sounds great!
It looked like a Yamaha I think. These small uprights are great workhorses for many but of course in Yunchan's hands they can sound

So fun to watch him play him in a setting like this in his leather jacket instead of the more serious settings of classical music venues

You just gave me an early holiday gift! Thanks Yunchan and Tiny desk!
Finally. Good job, NPR. This guy's interpretations of esoteric pieces at such a tender age is really remarkable. Too wise for his age.

That upright piano’s best day EVER! 🥰 🙏🏽 Just an incredible talent!
I can't get enough of this prodigy's exquisite mastery. Simply the best I have ever heard. And such a gentle spirit. I've listened over and over to every video that's on the internet, so it's nice to have some fresh material. Thank you, NPR and Yunchan Lim.
Thank you for living during my lifetime ❤. Stay pure hearted in your music.
A little bit late healing but i'm so happy to hear that scean. Wonderful~ thank you for greatful artist. And you. Thank you for your upload.^^
He seems quiet guy in Korean and English but when he plays his piano, we all can hear that piano is the media to tell his stories and express his emotions. He is flawless and rather so polished with his music language. Such a dedicated young man.
When I was following Yunchan during the VC competition I was sure of his Carnegie and Verbier debut but tiny desk!!?? This early in his career no less. Thank you NPR and thank you Yunchan for being a monumental gift to us classical/music fans
Yunchan Lim is a very humble person, as you can hear. He has said in an interview that his aim is not to be some sort of star, no, he only wants to develope his playing because he loves piano music. And with that ambition he happened to be world famous!
I know! He destroys our spirit (in good way) in a moment and says “I hope you enjoy”…
I first heard this through smartphone and earphone while working, not watching the video screen.
At that time, I didn't notice that this is an upright piano!
I'm really lucky to be alive with him in the same universe.
His voice is shy but his playing is fully confident and even magnificent! Thank you, NPR!

From what I understand, Mr. Lim is one of most gifted pianists to ever play the instrument.
you understand it correctly sir :D
Give him a better piano, please. But thank you, NPR, for organizing this event and inviting Yunchan Lim over. Lim did a fantastic job here (-proves his beautiful pianism even on the upright piano and in an acoustically less-ideal setting).
I just enjoyed watching the gap between a genius pianist who played with confidence and musical depth vs. a shy young man who got a cold and felt nervous about public speaking. Yes, they are the same person!! ;)
Hope you feel better soon, Lim.
