Tools for How to Install Fiesta String Lights:
- Pliers
- Driver
Steps for How to Install Fiesta String Lights:
1. Find an existing power source and turn off the electricity.
2. Measure out the amount of flexible conduit needed to extend to the outdoor light switch box.
3. Fit three separate wire conductors (instead of a pre-made cable) through the flexible conduit and into the existing power source.
4. Splice the existing wires to the new wire conductors with pliers and cover with wire nuts.
5. Reconnect the outlet.
6. Using a driver, screw in the outdoor light switch box.
7. Feed the flexible conduit into the outdoor light switch box.
8. Using a driver, screw in the outdoor outlet box.
9. Feed a second set of flexible conduit/wiring into the outdoor outlet box.
10. Splice wires together at both boxes using pliers and wire nuts.
11. Using stainless-steel eye hooks, run two stainless-steel guide wires under stainless-steel tension across the roof.
12. Using S-hooks, crisscross the string lights across the guide wires.
13. Plug in the string lights cord.

Love keyboard electricians. He did a good job on a budget probably. Nothing wrong with his install, improved a hack job that would have failed eventually.
I'd love to see the homes of the keyboard electricians and see how many code violations I could find.
exactly like there are times that we could have done something differently to improve our jobs and we just oversee the little things!

I like the idea of hanging them from s hooks, but it seems like they could slide around or even fall off in windy conditions if you dont secure them with a zip tie or maybe squeeze down the hook so its no wide open like that
I'm always disappointed by the amount of negative comments on this channel.

+Parker Smith it depends on your area. A lot of times if its under a weather proof cover like the one he installed there is no need for a GFCI. I always say "code" stands for the least amount of work a contractor has to do to keep you from suing him
Could be connected to a GFCI inside the house or a GFCI breaker..

WOW, hiring an electrician for a few strings lights would cost a fortune - The lights connect to an outdoor extension as long as you have an outdoor electrical connection -- plug them in and you are good to go.

why did he put the outlet in the middle of the wall? it looked like he'd be able to keep it under the awning of the screen porch, and thus out of the way?

probably so both cords could reach the outlet they skipped that part i guess he had to put eye hooks in siding for lights going over to outlets

He should've installed a GFCI protected outlet on the deck. Hopefully there is a GFCI breaker in the panel.

Well, the outlet cover is already closed so there would be no problem
pepsicolachao the cover has nothing to do with that. If there is something plugged in to the receptacle and the appliance gets wet or an extension cord has an exposed wire, that is a high risk for someone getting hurt.
Right by his guide wire it looks like there is a floodlight. He could have used a screw in outlet connector there, plugged in the lights, and they would be switched. Want GFI? Put a GFI circuit in the breaker box.
Do you mean instead of the floodlight? No one would want a floodlight on at the same time as patio lights.

I think adding the outdoor outlet was smart.
I would've just ran that conduit 48" up and stopped right there with it, put in a quad box, duplex receptacle on one half, switched receptacle on the other half with the lights plugged into it. That way its reachable and multipurpose for the whole patio.
I agree, that after going to all the work of running an outlet would be nice if you could use it on the deck for other things. Maybe he wanted to keep the circuit low draw because he tapped into an existing circuit? Even thou he used low watt draw led/s, he still didn't seem to trust this lady around power! I wouldn't after seeing the initial setup. Also, i would have crimped the S hooks on the cable tighter to prevent any chance of coming off the cables.
he could have still run the conduit up high for a switched outlet and put in an always on outlet down at table height for a radeo on da padio
OK Scott, you forgot to tell everybody that the circuit was GFI protected. What a debate.
My first thought when he slid that conduit from inside to outside was "I know how the rats are getting in"
The catenary cable can be used to hang your laundry too. That's a two'fer.
A swaged ferrule or even a Gripple would look better than saddling a horse with a bunch of crosby U clamps.
Those black lights seem awfully big, black and industrial for a porch. I bet she ripped them down and put her Christmas lights back up.

if he managed to just tuck conduit through screen porch wall, she could have just run cord through there also. but those little Christmas lights are not made for year-round use the wires start to pull out on them from hanging and swaying in the wind with sunlight breaking down plastic

I like the Christmas lights much better, which are already approved for outdoor usage. All they had to do is run the plug though the wall to the indoor outlet!
My OCD anal nature would have me removing all of those plastic clips before pulling the old lights down.

you just string lights above a patio like in restaurants and leave them up year-round our city does it in downtown trees and patios and they use Christmas lights like she had that are not for year-round use the fall apart after a while in wind and sun aparently code inspection does not apply to the city

Good solution but cmon use EMT conduit to run that stuff, we would get knocked by the inspectors if we use plastic boxes and liquid tight flex conduit, Chicago code doesn’t comply with this but at least he made it look a bit clean.
That's because Chicago has a bunch of idiots in charge.
Ive been watching these videos a lot and every time he uses a slotted screwdriver to install plugs and switches i die a little more inside. Americans need to embrace the Robertson screwdrivers lol
the really annoying part is even if you have square drive or the combo square slotted screwdriver you have to use a Philips or slotted on screws holding outlet to box then a small slotted for the cover plate anyway, they keep upgrading outlet screws to new better ones but can't make them all the same

I hate wire nuts. I know they are code but all they are are places for loose connections to start. Just putting wires back in box is enough movement to loosen the connection. There are many different and superior ways of making electrical connections but somehow code has not changed.
richb313 I agree. Many years ago when i first saw those twist connectors i couldn't believe that they connect whole houses that way. Some terminal blocks are way more proper already. Or solder it. But who am i to deviate from "The Code".

What's the better way?
WAGO-connectors for example. These connectors here are rated for 32A/450V and can connect solid, stranded, fine-stranded wires together. They've got the CENELEC- (Europe) and UL-certification (US and Canada):

Just strip the wires about 11mm (a bit less than 1/2"), open a lever, put the wire into the connector and close the lever. Done. You can put fine-stranded wires into the connector after stripping, no soldering or bootlace ferrules necessary.

Does this guy know how to bend pipe...that sealtight is awful.
He is trying to demonstrate a project that someone with modest DIY skills can undertake. Pipe bending is not going to inspire homeowners to tackle these jobs themselves, but rather leave it to the experts. And yes, he is a master electrician and I'm confident he can and does bend pipe from time to time.

the external power outlet would always have it's water proof door open to plug in the lights thus defeating the purpose.
+Michael Latham He used an "In Use" aka bubble cover over the outlet. It has provisions to be closed with the wire plugged in.

Seriously...you don't put up lights like these and be concerned about power consumption...TV acting at its finest...
There's only 2 things that could be wrong with this.
1) I don't know if he wired that outlet from a GFCI outlet because if it's not a GFCI outlet, then it's a bit of a risk.
2) This isn't really something wrong, but I prefer the outdoor boxes that allow for it to still be a waterproof seal while having something plugged in.
Other than those 2 things, it's a fine job. You keyboard electricians just need to shut up already.
