What Happened To The Bell Super DH? | Giro Switchblade Review

  • After a bunch of comments asking about the Bell Super DH, I thought it was about time I explained where why I no longer have it and why I switched to the Giro Switchblade helmet with removable chin bar.
    There's no real mystery... the short story is that it got sent back. The helmet was faulty. I ordered the Giro Switchblade as a replacement and have been using it for over six months. It's DH certified, big, heavy and hot as hell. But is it any good?
    Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the Giro Switchblade... in baby blue :)
    This is my review.

    Interesting info. I like the removable chin bar style over anything else. 12 months ago I ordered the exact same Switchblade online...immediately sent it back...sooooo heavy and head got crazy hot just trying it on at home. Went with the Bell Super 3R. Happy with that for now...LBS recently suggested looking at Leatt as a solid alternative...Upgrade research starts for next season! Feliz Navidad!!

      Hey! Yep, that all sounds about right. It's SOOOO heavy. I will have to look at an alternative for the summer. I'd love to try the new Bell enduro...But like I said, I'm very wary now about buying helmets. I haven't had much luck :) I think I'll have to make an effort to find some locally. Let me know if you find anything interesting for your next season's riding 👍

    huge step up in terms of editing quality your last videos.
    I think I will end up buying a Bell Super 3R Mips mainly because of its weight and breathability

    Interesting video Nathan. I'm still rocking the Super 2R but it's getting a bit old and manky now so I'm wondering about a new lid. I love the 2R and I'm not bothered about DH certification so I'll definitely be having a look at the Super Air R.

    • @SenderoSeeker
      @SenderoSeeker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ye. The 2R is a cracking helmet. I’d definitely put the Super Air R at the top of my list. Let me know if you pick one up. I think I’ll wait until the summer arrives.

    I just got a super 3r and it's comfy as fook. I had a 2r ages ago and sold it off pretty quick as the medium which is the correct size for me was too tight especially around the temples. So I sent it back for the large, but I sold that as it was too big. But the 3r medium fits absolutely perfect and no longer had those pressure points at the temples.

    • @SenderoSeeker
      @SenderoSeeker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting to hear the sizing, or at least shape of the helmets has changed. I think when it comes time to upgrade Ill look at the Super Air. Although it's not DH rated, it only weighs 640 grams with the chin on! That's gotta be so much better in the heat 💦☀

    I have the same helmet and I agree with the review 100%. After coming back from Spain I started playing with the idea of buying a bell super DH, but give your impression I may have to at least try one on before buying.
    I had a met parachute helmet (very proframe like) before the giro, and loved it. Too bad my brother borrowed it and disintegrated it in a crash 😅.
    I am still searching for the perfect helmet. So of you find that unicorn, please make a video about it Nathan!
    Un saludo! 🤘

    I bought the Fox Proframe not too long ago for a very cheap price (Black Friday). I've done one ride with it and although it was hot to ride up in (it is summer though), I thought it was a pretty good fit. Not as comfortable as my old 661 full face but it's the safety rating I was interested in.

    • @SenderoSeeker
      @SenderoSeeker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Fox Proframe was a complete no go for me. I don’t think I would consider anything without a removable chin guard now. The next (summer) purchase will probably be the Bell Super Air R. But this time try one on first 👍

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SenderoSeeker I think the opposite, I would not consider switchable helmets, only full face for me. I would never use this feature, and I have camera at the chin guard.. also I want maximum protection.

    • @SenderoSeeker
      @SenderoSeeker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johannes Nilsen it’s too hot in Spain to ride with a full face helmet. You’d pass out after 10 minutes climbing.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SenderoSeeker that sounds bad,but I checked the average temps in summer in Spain, it does not seem too bad. of course if it's warm I would take it easier.
      I ride with full face even if it's 30c, but I have plenty of water, but if it's easy dirt road sections with no traffic I sometimes get pull the helmet up.

    I have been through a few helmets over the last few years and one thing i hate is heat, give me a cold dry day anytime. Any way i have been running a Troy Lee stage and even i can get away with some long climbs on a not too hot day. Merlin cycles are doing them for less than half price right now. Fox proframe was also pain at the front of my head too, common complaint, from what i have heard.

    • @SenderoSeeker
      @SenderoSeeker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good to know. I did look at that helmet initially but it doesn't have a removable chin guard, right?

    • @drjarvis2003
      @drjarvis2003 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SenderoSeeker Chin guard does not remove, but thats one of the reasons that the weight is so low, and i just hook it on to the backpack for that climbs anyway, although the guys that dont run a pack seem to put it through that bars for the climbs. I have not noticed any wind noise with this helmet, but mostly where we ride, is within the trees.

    5:10 I haven't had that issue with the buckle on 2016 Fox Rampage pro carbon, which I will have to retire soon.
    Maybe your gloves make it harder? I don't take the gloves off unless I have to, for taking off the helmet I never did that. only times it get harder is when the strap gets frozen, which can happen if it gets wet, and I wear a Buff and body heat don't warm it up. So if it gets snow or water on it, or sweat and its sub zero it can get quite stiff, but it's not really a issue for me.

  • @suney20

    I also bought the Super DH but found the quality lacking, I returned mine because the eps foam was coming away from the plastic shell (new helmet!!!), I also found the clasp at the back was very hard to open and close like it wasn't lining up properly. In the end I just ended up with a dedicated full face Poc Coron
