We have really hard water as well. So much so that I just replaced my old washer. Now it tells me about once a week I have to run one of those washer cleaner tablets about once every ten days. I do about 12 loads before I have to do this.
This base recipe is great!! I have done this for years. I'm over in Sweden but born and raised in the US, and have also lived 5 yrs. off grid mid BC Canada. Now I'm back in Sweden out in our old homestead in the country/forest, where I raised my kids. Moved back here as I felt the need to be close to my children/adults, now that the world is going totally bonkers! 🤯 Anyhow, I digress... I can't get hold of either Fels Naphtha, Zote or other natural laundry bar soap over here. But, I do make my own lard soap, which I use. Will add some EO scent to it since the lard soap isn't scented. I used to make my laundry soap the exact same way as you do which works great. I've also tried just making the dry version but, washing with cooler water, it did leave white residue on my washed laundry so, I don't do the dry laundry detergent anymore. Only thing I do different now, is that I use about 1/3 of the water content. When everything is dissolved, I don't let it sit for 24 hours untouched, I go back and stir about once an hour over the span of 6 hours. Then pour into either my stand mixer about half full and beat the fairly thick detergent until it looks like "cool whip"/laundry sauce/cream/whichever you chose to call it. I have opted to make it this way, to save space and also that my children love it this way and especially my son and DL that is the only one of my kids that has a toddler/my granddaughter, really loves this laundry soap, since my granddaughter has absolutely no negative reactions to "my soap". She would get a rash from all commercial detergents and the "organic" ones are way to expensive. Both them and me will use about one table spoon of the soap creme to a full load of laundry. It dissolves beautifully in lukewarm water and the laundry comes out clean, even grease stains. If really dirty/stained spots, they'll use a bar of pure lard soap to rub on stain first and throw in the machine with the rest of the laundry load and stain is gone. I've had no issues with Borax and my septic or pipes.
I love this recipe, I am going to give it a try. I used to make my own powder laundry detergent but it had 3 bars fels naphtha and it used a whole box each of borax and washing soda plus oxiclean. We now live on ranch and have a septic system and well water. Do you have a liquid softener recipe?
Since you make soap you can use 100%coconut oil soap to make your laundry detergent and it’s also a great dish detergent. Also you can make your own washing soda from baking soda and save even more money. We use the balls here also and every one gets their own fragrance. Thank you.
Great video! Does anyone know why there aren't any companies coming forth with the powdered laundry soap they had back in the day...they came in cardboard boxes. E.g. Fab, Gains, etc.🤨
I bought all the stuff for this. But I need to finish out the detergent that I have stocked first. I’m excited to switch over! Thank you. I’m also going to try your dishwasher soap!
Great info, thanks! I do have two questions: How much do you use per load? And, rather than diluting with water, is it possible to use it concentrated, but half the quantity?
I have used borax for around 15 years and never had a problem with it. It's so great at getting stains and smells out of things. It was really great at getting blood and sweat stench out of my jiu-jitsu gi, and it was always bright white. I do an around the washer shake of the box anytime my laundry is a little extra dirty and it's wonderful. I could see why you'd like this mix.
Check with local bakeries. My son in law and my daughter in laws parents own bakeries and they get so many of these they are usually happy to get rid of them...support that bakery and they'll probably be happy to give you some containers of different sizes
I have the recipe with the same ingredients and just use it dry. Is there a reason not to? I use 1-2T per load depending on how dirty things are. Just curious as to your reasons and if you came across any info stating not to.
Can use clean bar soap(3 bars if small). I make dry laundry detergent with the same ingredients. Just chop up the bar soap, put it in a food processor with some of the bk soda or washing soda until fine. Mix a box each of borax, washing soda, 4lb box of bk soda and the finely blended bar soap. This lasts about 5 or 6 months for the 6 of us.
I have bad eczema and can't use Fels Naptha. I substitute a cup of Sal Suds (Dr.Bronner's) instead. Also add a cup of table salt to the mixture to help with hard water issues.

I used to make this when I had kids at home. This is a wonderful, clean smelling soap. GOD bless

I would use a funnel to help put in the container. Less possible mess that way. 😉
Love this. Ty.
Thank you for all the details, it helps. ❣

Thanks for the great video. Looks doable.

I do have a dedicated grater for my soap.
Practical….thx…
How much do you use in the washer

Another homemade laundry soap I got from rain country homestead.. 3 parts baking soda, 3 parts washing soda, 2 parts salt 🤷🏼♀️. Just another option
2.5 gallon plastic gas cans work great too.
Walmart now charges $1.00 for the a bucket.

Fels-Naptha soap is almost $18 a bar in Canada.
Can use clean bar soap(3 bars if small). I make dry laundry detergent with the same ingredients. Sorry, you use 2 or 3 tablespoons per load for the dry mixture.
I take 1 tablespoon borax and mix with quart of warm water and take a shot everyday to keep my bones strong.
How is this detergent with getting stains out?
I have the same question bc we live on a farm and our clothes get muddy!
Do you think this is OK for people with eczema
I have bad eczema and can't use Fels Naptha. I substitute a cup of Sal Suds (Dr.Bronner's) instead. Also add a cup of table salt to the mixture to help with hard water issues.
How can you make less.. there’s just me now… thanks💗
Half the recipe or quarter it.
