The perks of being a multi shipper
“Russia likes people who can laugh or cry at the drop of a hat” America fits this bill. Remember in the “German Situation” episode when Finland tried to tell America a joke, and he laughed before Finland finished telling him? In the episode where he meets Tony, America told his boss about that weird material he found, but his boss proceeds to gaslight him. We later on see America alone tearing up over being denied and rejected, but when he meets his alien, he’s happy and chipper again. Those are only two examples. Really, America and Russia are very similar personality-wise. It’s just that layer of over-confidence and loudness for America that distracts people, which is why it’s so upsetting when people butcher both his and Russia’s character when writing them in fanfics.
I think a big issue in the fandom is that hetalians assume that each country's entire personality is based on what their government structure is. And while that is partially true, their culture makes up a much bigger part of who they are. The reason America is clueless, patriotic, gluttonous, and is obsessed with heroes is that that's just the American stereotype. I think a lot of fans forget what this show actually is, which is one big play on stereotypes, and that's what makes it so entertaining! And I also think a lot of people don't seem to grasp that this is entirely fictional. As long as you don't condone inc*st, p*dophilia, or even possessive behavior in the real world, I don't think it hurts to enjoy those scenarios in fiction with characters you like the dynamic of. That being said, in a fandom like Hetalia, all you really need to do is be open-minded and understand how to separate fiction from reality.
I find America very hard to ship with anyone in general. I've always seen him as a lone wolf- which makes sense given that that's how the actual country behaves in geopolitics.
He also pretends to be stupid and always happy for the sake of not making people worry of him. This is especially shown in Paint it white.
Hashtag America deserves better treatment from the fandom 2021

I had no idea the funanimation dub was a thing for the longest time since I’m not from an English-speaking country. It’s so painful how hard they tried to make hetalia soooo edgy.
Knowing that America has diplomatic relationships with basically everyone around the world is why I ship him(and his female counterpart) with generally everyone. :3
I feel that Russia being a sadistic character would be normal if it was like during the 1930's to 1970's. because come on. Doing a deep dive into the history of the Cold War, it really would make sense.
