I don't really care about top/bottom dynamics but yeah, I hate it when fanfics portray Italy as the submissive virginal maiden and Germany as the dominant hunk who knows exactly what he's doing in the relationship.

In all the smutty fanfics I’ve read about Germany and Italy, top Italy almost always seems to be the healthier sexual relationship. Like, the authors have Italy take in Germany’s wants and desires into consideration as well as his own (something I sadly don’t see much in top Germany fics, take notes top Germany writers). Also, they don’t make Germany more feminine when he’s bottom (you’d think it wouldn’t happen, but I’ve read characters who have literal six packs given soft stomachs because they were bottom).

Even when I first entered the fandom, GerIta was just not my cup of tea. Sure, the fan art was cute, but that's about it. I also tend to be a sucker for rare pairs, so having the most popular ship in the fandom shoved down my throat made me detest it even more.

The point about Germany and HRE reminds me of the Inu Yasha ship war.... oh my god that is one of the biggest ship war ever and it lasts for decades already. it is exactly the same as the hypothetical situation you described. The guy's girlfriend died, and hundred years later the gf was reincarnated as another girl and he fell in love with the new girl. Then the original gf somehow revived and returned.....

What do you mean they're not canon? Germany practically proposed to him... And italy have expressed in the anime that he have dirty thoughts of Germany he slept naked together with germany (and other characters lol) but he request japan to tell him how he can be "more than a friend" to Germany....
