    Thank you very much. Short and to the point.
    I have a hernia to the left of my belly button. I have no pain while lifting weights. I wear a stretchy band about 20 cm high while exercising.
    I don’t do anything crazy and have no desire to look like a body builder. I just want to be healthy.

    Hey mate, I currently have an inguinal hernia which doesn't give me any bother day to day. Just wondering if cycling is an ok general exercise to do? I really miss it but I'm concerned I may make it worse. I'm avoiding surgery as I'm pain free for now...had the hernia for 6 years if that helps. Great videos, thanks for the advice.

      If you have a hiatus hernia, that's a bit different to what is in this video. I've done a video on this though here which might help you: th-cam.com/video/86QpQu960kU/w-d-xo.html. I'm not sure what considerations there would be for swimming. Water exercises such as an aqua class where your body is upright should be fine. It will be if you swim on your back that you may experience some issues. Hope this helps.

    Hi Richard,
    Very helpful and informative.- Thanks🙂👍
    I’ve just had (last week) - a right sided open inguinal hernia surgery repair. I have a concept 2 rowing ergo-metre. In 2/3 months time I wonder whether a gentler return to the rower might then be possible?
    Alternatively, would have you got any views on raking up gentle Pilates ( with a supervising therapist) in a few months time?
    Thanks,
    Dave

      Both the rower and the Pilates may be possible, but ask your physical therapist as people recover at different rates.

    I (26, male) had an ultrasound scan around my groin regarding something else and the doctor noted I might have a risk of developing an inguinal hernia on my left side and told me not to do any kind of stomach curls - and to do plank instead. I've been able to find limited information on how to proceed if you're prone to developing a hernia. With time without straining activity would my situation then better, or do I just need to accept not doing any of the exercises you deem "high risk" indefinitely? Best regards!

    • @ExerciseForHealth
      @ExerciseForHealth  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would avoid the higher risk exercises and find alternatives where possible.

    • @bobp5523
      @bobp5523 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have no pain, why limit your activity? Severely restricting your activity to guard against the possibility of developing a hernia (which may never develop) seems overly cautious to me.
      Case in point : I was diagnosed 40 years ago with a small inguinal hernia on my right side and laxity (weakness) on my left side. I do not limit my exercise activity but always concentrate on proper form and body position. Over the decades my left hernia area occasionally bothers me but the right side hardly ever does. When I go through a several day bout of discomfort, I am more careful about activity until the discomfort subsides.
      So try to understand your body and what works for you. Then adjust your activities based on that.

    • @akshayambre6500
      @akshayambre6500 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am also in the same situation,I really wanted to avoid the hernia situation .Not sure which exercise will help to prevent.

    • @bobp5523
      @bobp5523 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@akshayambre6500 I would only avoid those activities that cause you pain. Go slowly and figure out what your body tolerates and what it doesn't. And if you do have some pain, I have found that when I occasionally have hernia related pain that doing a simple pelvic floor exercise helps me. Lie on your back on the floor with your feet flat on the floor (your legs bent). Then using your lower abs muscles, try to "press" or "draw" them down to the floor. It's a pretty subtle movement. You are flexing your pelvic floor down toward the ground.

    I just don't understand how the intestines make their way through the hard abs. When I flex my abs and I push with my hand I don't feel any places that are susceptible to pass

      The hernia comes through the wall of the stomach lining in the abdominal cavity.

      Not sure I understand this comment as it's a double negative. So, yes you can still do lot's of exercises with a hernia.

      Right, I’m screwed on my diet. I started a diet and work out program. Just to find out everything my workout routine consists of, is going to make it worse for my hernia 😩

      Do you have pain?
      Here's a different point of view : I was diagnosed 40 years ago with a small inguinal hernia on my right side and laxity (weakness) on my left side.
