this video is a lifesaver! i just took the glass protector off my a7ii because it was all chipped and cracked and was horrified to see my actual screen all delaminated and destroyed. i thought the screen was ruined. I found this video and was so relieved to find out that i did have that crappy plastic cover over the original glass. now its removed and a new protector on and i am back in business!! thank you so much!
Joe...THANK YOU 1,000,000 times for this tutorial. I had no idea that my A7ii came stock with a screen protector. I was so bummed when I thought that I had scratched up the actual LCD screen. After watching your tutorial, I used a super sharp blade, took my time, removed the stock screen protector, and put a new one over my LCD. It now looks like it did when I bought the camera brand new 2 years ago. Thank you again!!! David

Sony screen is just insane. I just wonder if Sony does not put that plasticky layer but the screen protector they sale separately, it should be much less trouble! Little scratches over time is much, much, much better than a once thought unfixable huge white scratch.
Is it possible to change the whole panel? There is a camera in auction probably will go very cheap but the whole screen is broken if we can fix it, I wanna bid for it

I was willing to do it my self, the screen alone cost like $40 USD. Good to know now that I can just peel and replace with film cover.
Glad to see it works. I own A mount bodies, the a77 (2 each), a850 and a a900 and so far no peeling but I put screen protectors on the body the day I opened the retail boxes. I'm assuming this will work with the a99 and a99II? Every A mount body on eBay has peeling lcd screens.

Hey thanks alot! Last may I bought a used a7r II and while the top layer protection screen is mostly ok, the odd bubble/ scratch look is appearing on the edges of around the screen, so its not too bad that I feel the need to replace it now, but in future it's good to know that I can actually remove that plastic film. I'm glad sony included a screen protector with them, didn't get that on my old canon system.
Okay ! so it worked thank you ! ... How do i get rid of the humid bubbles inside the lens as it was attached to the camera and the sensor also is a bit damp.
I had no idea Sony cameras come with screen protectors! I actually bought another screen protector and put it right on the screen... Thank you for the tip! Also, just want to leave an interesting bit of info: I can read Chinese characters, so if the Kanji is the same as what it means in Chinese, the first icon should mean the screen protector allows more than 95% of light from the screen to pass through. The fingerprint icon literally says "fingerprint stops", which probably means the screen protector prevents fingerprint marks being left on it. Hope it helps anyone who gets this screen protector to appreciate it even more =)
Thank you, Joe, for showing this could be done. I used the Sony glass made for the A7Rii. Glass and adhesive were very good. Sony recommend adhering a short edge first and working across. It covered the active screen area but was nearly a mm shy of the frame on one side so not as elegant as it should be, given it was 3 times the cost of generic glass screens.
I didn't realize there was a stock plastic film over the screen. I wonder if that is part of the reason that the Sony rear screens are the murkiest and least sharp screens I've ever seen. Did you notice any increased sharpness when you replaced that plastic with glass?
I have exactly the same problem on my A7r. Just one thing, did you remove an additional and optional protective screen that you previously placed or is there a standard factory issue protective screen on the camera?
Glad to update you before it becomes a problem that bothers you! Hopefully you won't have to do this, but I must be honest that I've seen it on a number of Sony cameras...
So, what you are saying is that Sony cameras come with a screen protector already on them, albeit a shitty one. I always put one of these on my fujis and olympuses. On my Sonys I didn't realize I was actually just stacking one on top of one that was already there.
that screen that you peeled off... was that on the camera from Sony when it was new or was that something that you put on when you got your camera? So then is that screen protector on all Sony screens I wonder?
Yep, it was on there at the time of purchase, not as an extra accessory. From other people in the comments, I think it's quite common across most other Sony cameras.
Geez I hope this works on the 6300 as I have started to attempt it on all the corners but I’m making it way worse and can’t seam to get anything to pull up😩
Thanks for the video! Btw I live in next to Tokyo also! Also what I recommend you is to reheat a bit the screen hair dryer or leave the cam under the sun for 1h it's will peal off really good after
Sony A77 mkii Had a 3rd party screen cover from new, I thought that was why my screen looked like crap underneath some sort of reaction.. I saw this the other day and this morning I was good to go! Very scary as all four edges refused to peal, hands shaking lets go for broke. Job done as you say be careful and take time removing. So simple my screen looks like it just came out of the box! Can't thank you enough :)
Please note! The same problem applies to the camera screens Sony RX 1, RX 10, RX 100 and Sony Alpha series. The glass screen is covered with plastic, hard coating, which in principle is not to change. To protect this coating from damage users assume various protective plates for example PCK-LM15 Screen Protector. Unfortunately, this first protective layer after a few years of use is subject to a process of destruction and the screen appears more and more stains. It looks awful and worse the visibility of the image on the screen. Remove all the protective layer and insert the protector with optical glass directly on a glass screen as in the above guide! For RX 1 you should buy the optical glass like to the camera Sony RX 100.
are you sure that the sony a5000 series comes with a screen protector? My screen looks like it has bubbles under it, but I can't tell if it's the lcd or the screen protector. I can't even tell if there is a screen protector!
well...I messed up my camera after watching this video cause it seemed like there was a old screen protector on it like it is shown in this video and when I tried to remove it, the first layer of the lcd screen came off....
It looks to me like the anti-reflective coating has worn off of the protector where your face has been rubbing against it. Apple had the same issue with some of their macbook retina screens... albeit not quite so pronounced as most people were not rubbing their faces against those!
Yeah, it does look like that, though oddly it hasn't happened with any of my other cameras, even more to the tale is that I actually rarely hold this camera to my face. I use it mostly for filming and often from lower angles, using the screen rather than viewfinder...
I was not purchasing a screen protector for my sony rx100III because the retailer told me not to because of some reasons (and obviously he faked me) and ofc my camera screen looks horrible now...so I asked Sony if the layer on the screen can take off or not and they said we cant, and we have to replace the screen for HKD800(?) But now I see your video and I can save that money for food and more foooooooooooood!!!! Thanks!!!!!
Thank for this great tip. I have the same issue with the LCD on my Sony SLT A65. I'm wondering if it's safe to use the same procedure. Anybody has ever tried Sony A65?
Thanks! This helped me alot! Still scary to peel that thing of the screen tho. Ordering a new (and better!) protector as we speak. Shame tho that Sony does not invest in better protectors. I contacted them to replace it and it would have taken some time here. I'll subscribe!
Thank you VERY MUCH! I got the same problem. I asked SONY retail seller and SONY Experience Shop , they told me the coating on the screen was oxidized, but offered no solution.(suprisely!)
Bro thanks to you, I was able to get an A7Riii for $780 USD 😂 This guy who was totally clueless thought something was just broken on the display and let me take it cheap because he thought it was damaged. I removed the film and installed a glass protector from Amazon that I got for 10 bucks on a pack of 4. Cheers 🍻
Thanks, have had the same problem for months on my A7rii and haven't had the guts to put on the new screen protector I bought. Will do now. Pissed off that quality control is so bad.
Yeah, mine has been bad for months too and then recently it got really bad so I thought I should try and attempt my plan to peel off the layer. I'm so glad it worked out!
One of the biggest contributors to damaging the coating in sunblocking cream or similar chemicals you smear into your faces and hands. A good practice is always to buy and mount the Sony's original screen protector together with your camera. Its cheap and works wonders
Interestingly though, this hasn't happened with any of my other cameras. Also, I mostly use the A7R for video and shoot from lower angles with the screen, rather than hold to my face. I'm wondering if hotter climates are potentially to blame? It's as if the adhesive on the underside of the original protector is what's coming away, rather than the exposed top layer itself. Either way, I'm glad it's solved now and easy to solve if it happens again!
Success!! I had the same issue with my A7Rii as well! The very ugly blemishing was most annoying! Thank you for the tip and video! I followed and did the same and it looks great again! Excellent!! :-)
Use a blow dryer or heat gun at a very low setting and carefully brushing back and forth and for very short periods of time... you can remove the damaged cover easier. Let it cool before cleaning with alcohol wipe.

It's a pretty smart solution for those that like to live on the edge. At least there's always a fall by protector.
Cassius Grey it is, if the customer actually knows about it. As far as I can tell, most of us (including me) just thought Sony had garbage screens.

Geez I hope this works on the 6300 as I have started to attempt it on all the corners but I’m making it way worse and can’t seam to get anything to pull up😩
Did this on my RX100 and it looks brand new! THANK YOU!
how can you tell if it is the display itself or the protector that is scratched. mine has small scratches but they do not have that bubbling effect
Hi Joe,
Where can I buy this screen to replace. Any link for it.
Thanks
Please note! The same problem
applies to the camera screens Sony RX 1, RX 10, RX 100 and Sony Alpha series. The glass
screen is covered with plastic, hard coating, which in principle is not to
change. To protect this coating from damage users assume various protective
plates for example PCK-LM15 Screen Protector. Unfortunately, this first
protective layer after a few years of use is subject to a process of
destruction and the screen appears more and more stains. It looks awful and
worse the visibility of the image on the screen. Remove all the protective
layer and insert the protector with optical glass directly on a glass screen as
in the above guide! For RX 1 you should buy the optical glass like to the
camera Sony RX 100.
are you sure that the sony a5000 series comes with a screen protector?
Thanks!!! I just did this fix by your video, I didin't knew there was a protective film! Great, looks like new!
Thanks!!!!!
Then I guess... dinner's on me? Enjoy!
Joe Allam sure come hk and i will treat you good food hahaha
Could I do this with an Xacto knife? Or would that damage the screen?
Thanks for the tip. My Camera looks 100x times better with your tip.
Was that plastic factory or a previously put on screen protector?
You saved my life , my Sony Rx10 finally looks great. TNX
Question! What camera strap are you using?
hi do you think this works on a 6300 too? or not?
have you found out ?
You might try warming the screen up a little bit with a standard hair dryer first, then peel off old screen. Saw that method on a similar video.
Thank for this great tip. I have the same issue with the LCD on my Sony SLT A65. I'm wondering if it's safe to use the same procedure. Anybody has ever tried Sony A65?
Does this work with all the sony cameras?? Because i have recently bought a sony hx80 and the screen is scratched...
Wow, thank you so much for this. I have the same problem with my NEX7. Need to go to buy a protector tomorrow. Thanks again.
Thanks! This helped me alot! Still scary to peel that thing of the screen tho. Ordering a new (and better!) protector as we speak. Shame tho that Sony does not invest in better protectors. I contacted them to replace it and it would have taken some time here. I'll subscribe!
Thanks for sharing bro I will do this on my old 6300 I can hardly see through
Thank you VERY MUCH! I got the same problem. I asked SONY retail seller and SONY Experience Shop , they told me the coating on the screen was oxidized, but offered no solution.(suprisely!)
same camera, same problem. Great video, thanks Joe.
Does the Sony NEX-5R has one of this? Thanks in advance
You might want to slightly warm it up with a hairdryer on low settings, this will soften the adhesive
Bro thanks to you, I was able to get an A7Riii for $780 USD 😂
This guy who was totally clueless thought something was just broken on the display and let me take it cheap because he thought it was damaged.
Either way, I'm glad it's solved now and easy to solve if it happens again!
thanks for sharing this video! has anybody done this to the a6500. I think it is a different screen? thinking about to change the protector
Did the original protective screen come stock from factory?
do you have any idea what causes lcd ghost touching?
Success!! I had the same issue with my A7Rii as well! The very ugly blemishing was most annoying! Thank you for the tip and video! I followed and did the same and it looks great again! Excellent!! :-)
Cheers mate. Will do this now instead of buying a new screen.
Use a blow dryer or heat gun at a very low setting and carefully brushing back and forth and for very short periods of time... you can remove the damaged cover easier. Let it cool before cleaning with alcohol wipe.
What could I do if my Sony NEX3N display screen goes completely dead?
