I'm a 32 year old hip-hopper but I grew up with my dad bumping nothing but C&W. I feel very nostalgic about this (kick-ass) song and many others of the era. I have my preferences, but good music is good music.
I'm 25 and I found my love for country music due to turning the radio on at night to fall asleep back about 15 years ago. The great country classics are still the ones I go back to, no matter what else I listen to now. Nothing and No-one can truly beat the men and women who became Country Legends for making us feel the way they do with their music. A lot of the newest country artists just don't have the power of the Greats, which is a shame for todays kids as they just don't have that something.
this song was supposed to kinda a joke. but a lady in my town took it serious. her husband would stop at a bar every night by a bottle of lord calvert and throw the cork away, then crawl home when it was gone. so she did just what the song said, and she is making a good living, she quit her job and still a lot of people go to her bar just to see what is going on. go baby go
The lyrics are absolute poetry, captures almost every cliche' of the beer joint lifestyle, and the terms...so dead on..."there'll be no reason you can't stop off here first...", man, how often have I heard that term, "let's stop off at (fill in the blank of your favorite country beer joint or tavern). The song was so dead on then, and is still dead on now...pubs, beer joints, taverns, bars...since the dawn of time, a culture all their own...:-)
ONE OF THE BEST PURE TRUE COUNTRY VOICE, AND OF COURSE THE SONG TOO. I JUST WATCHED IT 4 TIMES CONTINUOUSLY. HIS DUETS WITH SHELLY WEST ARE SO SOOTHING AND TOUCHING TOO. THIS IS REAL COUNTRY DOWN TO HUMAN ROOTS. THANKS.SO VERY MUCH .
Love this!! my mom and dad use to have parties and the guys would play the Guitars and fiddles and sing this song and many others like it , brings back so many memories from back in the day!! Long Live Real Country Music!!!!!!
WBCN in Boston played album-oriented rock when I was going to BU, but the Morning guy made an exception and played this country song when it came out, because he thought it was so good. Or hilarious. Or both. Such a human touch, and so funny -- best lyrics ever, and so TRUE, in some situations.
I love this song and adore the Frizzel family. this song brings back memories to me and they are awesome. Ty so much for uploading David. Now if you can find his brother Allen Frizzel yu'll be right up there with the entire family. ty so much
When I heard this tune for the 1st time I was actually going to do this. Thought it'd be an awesome way to make myself extra cash, the hubby would't have to spend his money else where. I'd get it! Back then I knew plenty of people that went to the bars. What better way to spend more time with the hubby, other family and friends? I even pictured it and drew up plans to do this, but didn't get around to it and then ended up moving. Maybe I will do this someday! I will let ya all know if I do.....
I remember this song so well. My mother had just dumped an alcoholic husband and I remember my mother and I talking about how this song was for him. Still a good song though.
I was a (pretty bad) DJ at a country music station when I graduated from high school in the mid-eighties. This song had been out for a few years, but it was still a favorite request. I haven't heard it in probably 20-some odd years. I remembered it all, though!
@Yoyosorayo It's good to hear some younger people enjoy real quality country music. It's sad the state of country music is in these days. It's not country music to me. THIS is country.
@montanastranger This style IS still around! It just costs twice as much on the jukebox at the bar. But it's worth the investment to see faces of the older (50+) folks there light up! Start off with Coe's "You Never Even Called Me By My Name," followed by Freddie Hart's "Easy Loving." You will HAVE the attention of the entire house, and contributions will be forthcoming!
@bakogoofball ....absolute agree.......im only 24 however i rather listen to these songs than any other......kinda call me old fashion thanks to my daddy and poppa
@hellfireo1cu812 Shelly West was a frequent duet partner with David Frizzell, so she probably sang "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino" on stage a lot. If she ever recorded it, she probably just put the song on an album. I only ever heard David Frizzell's version of this song on the radio.
@maddieestelle23 Sister, I know just how you feel,I'm a 14 year old boy and I've got george jones, Alabama, conway twitty, willie nelson, waylon jennings and Jerry reed on my Ipod, also I wear my lone star belt buckle, cowboy boots, And flannel shirts every day.
classic country will never die in our hearts and homes if we dont let it so play classic country loud and proud

This song was an absolute classic in it's day. Love it, love to read the younger generation's comments who get it. Here's to good songs.

The original recording had some great bass backup singing that sounded really cool.

I never did think this song got the attention it should have. It is one of the cleverest, and David presents it so well.
