So I finished my 1st marathon this weekend. I missed my planned time by a lot but I was just happy to finish. No GI issues but as it was warm I made sure to drink lots which did mean about 5 stops to use the bathroom. Years ago when I ran in high school I would get a lot of GI issues I think they were dehydration related.
Glad to hear you got around the course and finished! Sometimes that's all there is to it! When we get dealt a hand we can't control, like the weather, there's nothing else to do but just get it done and scrap the goal! Big congrats! YOU ARE A MARATHONER!!!! I hope you can bask in the satisfaction of your huge achievement!
A everyday issue for many of us old geezers..I never run anywhere without my fanny back..I always have a spare pr of socks and an extra insole as well as a zip lock baggy of the brown napkins from fast food places..the brown color disappeares in the woods..the white colorway stands out in the weeds and leafs..I rarely need it but it's always there..over the years I've dialed in my pre run/race food..a cinnamon raisin bagel with honey and a cola for the caffeine..this combo always gets things moving before I leave the house and top it off with a pit stop at the porta-jons..after the initial cola it's nothing but water until after the run or race..anything other than water is a guarantee GI issue..I did once eat a banana at a water stop and that didn't seem to give a problem, but gels or anything is trouble..
@@AndyCliffMTB Thanks, Andy! I appreciate the message. There isn’t much more for me to do. We’ll have to wait and see how things shake out on Thursday!
@@its_Matt_B_ My dad lives in the Meadows in Sarasota....he's going to a hotel tomorrow....likely more secure than his house. So I'm keeping a close eye on it...good luck!
Listening to those ultra-runners with iron stomachs talk about their nutrition is definitely a good idea. I’ll try eating half a banana before my next steady run and tag you!
@@runnerfromhel Oh yeah, it's definitely trainable. I think the issue is that it's not something people running "normal" distances worry about, until they have to worry. 🤣
I've heard a runners mention taking Imodium before races. I haven't seen or heard it recommended to the general running public but apparently it's out there in the lore of elite runners. I'm not so competitive that I worry about having to stop during a race, not that I race all that often anyway, and races typically have portapotties around the course. But needing to stop and not being able to find a place on long runs has been an issue. The public restroom situation could be better here, although it's generally a good place for running. I've stopped into fast food restaurants and convenience stores when needed but don't love doing that. Maybe it's the southern upbringing. No one has said they don't want us doing that, but they haven't said it's ok either and maybe they're just being polite by not saying anything. Being consistent seems to be the big thing though, figuring out how long to eat before running and what to eat so that the business gets done before the run, and sticking with it.🧻 Stay safe, Matt!
@@largeeddie Thanks, Eddie! Yeah, I get the uneasy feeling of going into places to use the facilities, but that unease is directly inverse to how bad I need to go, so I guess it always works out. I’ve also heard of runners taking Imodium but I haven’t spoken to anyone who has and not talked about it, so it’s probably something I read and can’t be sure how prevalent a practice it is.
@@its_Matt_B_ That's how I reconcile it too. I never plan on using a business's facilities, and I wouldn't unless I knew that I couldn't make it home safely without stopping.
As someone who soiled myself 💩 2x while running (🙈), don’t ignore the urge thinking that you can hold it. 😂 Plan your routes well and include routes with porta potties 🚽 or run 2-3 hours after food intake.
@@davidg9120 Thanks, David! You’re very kind to say that! It looks like it’s going to be a direct hit to my area. We’ll see how things shake out on Thursday!
This is my weekness and i am practicing it consuming carbs while doing marathon pace or tempos or effort. If running with dextrose iv is good when running i probably be doing it 😂
What?! No emoji request? Too obvious, eh? In my area, the public restrooms close or are removed when the weather gets cold and don't come back until summer. Major bummer for long-distance road runs. So I do loops closer to home. The trails don't have this problem of course, but it's a skill. Suffice it to say that make-shift "pessoi" is the way to go. Before a race or long run, I rely on Death Wish espresso blend and a bagel to motivate the system. Just needs sufficient time and a bit of warming up to work its magic, which can mean pretty early rising. Getting GI distress during a run/race -- despite my precautions -- is a recent phenomenon for me and is triggered by gels, especially the caffeinated ones. So I rely more on sport drink for carbs than I use to. I space out the gels more and take longer to finish them The nice side to that is that I'm getting more water and electrolytes that way. And yeah, running is not a simple sport. BTW the Kodiak alternate courses were released yesterday after approval from the forest service. Not even close to the original route/area. All the best for the storm!
Until I was up in your area last year I hadn't even considered the public bathrooms closing in the winter, but of course it makes some kind of inconvenient sense! Good to hear you know what works when needed, ad also know the downside of caffeinated gels. 🤩 Better to have an alternate course than not. You're going to do great and I can't wait to hear about it. Thanks for the well-wishes about the storm. It's not going to be pleasant!
GI issues are one of the many reasons I dropped carbs and went completely fat-adapted. It's liberating to walk up to the start line without gels or chews.
Same here. Full carnivore diet for 5 years. All training runs and races are done at least 14 hours fasted. I do drink some plain water and electrolytes if it’s very hot.
