This is why I'm reluctant to do any more Half Marathons and definitely wouldn't do a full marathon. My last HM I had stomach issues from 8-14km and had a 💩 stop at side of road (luckily it was a rural area) at 14k. Got going again but came on with a couple of miles to go. I did used to find it difficult on most runs even short distances although I'm now better with certain foods. I think hydration is key.

I genuinely empathise. That sounds like a horror story for sure. If Oxford Half wasn’t as well organised I would have found myself in the same situation.

@@AubreyRunning I had to leg it to portaloos when I'd finished lol. I have never used gels etc in races or even in training for this reason. Hopefully I can do some trial and error in the future.

The only thing that comes easy to me about running is food and drink. I can eat anything, any time, before, during, after, without any issues. I know how lucky this is and I don't take it for granted.

Oh man I wish! I’ve even grown anxious a little bit about long runs now because of the experiences I’ve had and they’ve forced to learn and adjust. You’re definitely blessed to be like that

Great video, I don't actually fuel for my early runs as it's too soon in the day for my stomach to digest it. Even a half marathon training run, if I set off before 8 am then I won't eat anything

Ah I’m a bit different to most runners, I’ve had my bowel removed so every run I have runners tummy lol. Exercise in general speeds up digestion making people need to go more. Nutrient timing as you said is key and a visit to the loo before a long run, race is strongly advised (definitely in my experience 😂)

@@AubreyRunning it’s a bit of long story, so I’ll try and keep it short lol. Up until 10 years ago, I was a fitness instructor. When I was 25, I began to have tummy issues and that’s when I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (IBD). It began to get bad and I had to be hospitalised. Whilst treating me, I picked up an infection on the ward which combined with my illness necessitated me having my bowel removed to keep me alive. I then had subsequent operations, so they could reconstruct my digestive system and create something called a J-pouch (I don’t have a stoma/external bag). Since then I’ve always kept myself fit and healthy and actively trained at gyms. When Covid hit and the gyms closed, I took up running to fill the void and I’ve ran ever since.
To anyone else that might be reading this, if you have stomach issues in your everyday life, please don’t put off speaking to you Doctor!

3 Weetabix and a banana with semi-skimmed milk plus a large glass (approx 250ml) of orange juice for me - about 90 minutes to 2 hours before I run - I have the same every day!
I usually have a High 5 Energy Gel Aqua when I am lining up for a race and will carry another with me for a 1/2 Marathon (in case I feel I need it around 10km)

Sounds good to me… I think for me, as long at I get to the toilet 2 times before setting I’m generally fine. That does sound like a simple enough food routine though. Cheers for the input

My breakfast before a run is always the same. 2 weetabix with vegan yoghurt and a banana 🍌.
Been for 2 later in the day runs this week and found out the hard way, not to have coke or too much fruit/sweets before a run twice this week 😮💩

It’s so amazing when you find your way and your routine. I know people that won’t venture out on long runs simply because of tummy issues.

Dunno if you’ve followed Andy from the FOD Runner, but he too has had major GI issues and has had to do lots of experimenting over the years, including avoiding gluten before a race! I’m surprised you add protein powder before a run though, that is one thing that is quite famously advised by sports nutritionists to avoid before running… after ok but not before! You will not be surprised to hear that Brodie Sharpe’s nutrition podcasts with experts are by far his most popular!

I honestly put it down to habit. Honestly could t do it any other way. I’ve learned that all these things are simply habit. Coming from a gym background, I made this a constant and honestly don’t fair very well with anything else.
I’m sure I’ll fine tune this as I go and as I start to do longer distances which will need adjustment again.

I also start my day with a somewhat small serving of oatmeal. Right now, I don't really need extra fuel as I'm only running about 10 miles. However, I used to bike for 4+ hours and the key for me was dates. Dates are nature's sugar bombs plus a good source of potassium. Too many gels upset my stomach. I could climb up some big California mountains with just dates and water.
Also, if you're having trouble pooping in the morning, you might need more fiber in your diet overall.

Thank you for this, great shout about the dates. I might actually give these a go! If you’re on Instagram I’ll tag you when I go buy them today. Do you just get the standard super market ones?
