21:22 For this stat, I know the numbers are different from what I said in a post long ago (I think I said 20% for 2022 and 10% for 2023). The reason is because ever since I started the series I’ve been calculating on a different metric. Here, I’m dividing the length of live vocals over the total length of vocals (live + lipped). Back then, I was dividing by the total length of the SHOW, including dance interludes, times when Mariah is offstage, etc. Which is why the current calculations are higher and more meaningful-hope that clears things up.

Just finished this with teary eyes, a living legend crumbling emotionally/mentally right in front of our eyes and yet lambs still bashing her even in this comment section. I wish nothing but a true vision of love for Mimi, even if it means stepping back from the spotlight for a moment or two, in fact indefinitely let her enjoy the fruits of her labor, but ik she’d never let herself do that either.

Also, I wouldn’t say she “lost a bit of her love for singing”, what I think she lost was that fire she had to prove people wrong. I think during this time she was going through so much, combined with her vocals not being what she hoped for, I think she just said “f this, I’m not going to fight it anymore”. And just resorted to lipping which doesn’t force her to “fail” any vocals, kind of like swimming the way the current takes her, instead of against it, which is what she did for over 30 years
yeah I think she realized the general public doesn't appreciate or even care when she's singing live anyway, so she figured there was no point in keeping that commitment anymore

It was really symbolic that she didn't sing VOL fully live 😢 And wow she fell below 50% love singing, that was shocking too
I 100% agree with you that the playback is no longer used when she just can’t hit the notes, it’s now just holding her voice back from singing live. Which is why I really do think she’s doing it to just keep her voice is good condition. Bc literally what’s the purpose of lipping all of Silent Night, which isn’t a hard song, except one verse??? Why not sing the first verse live too? It literally makes no sense Mariah!!!!
I don't think she's lost her love of singing one bit. I think the frustration with her instrument not behaving the way she wants it to and being extremely inconsistent is the sadness and disappointment you're picking up on. She WANTS to sing live but her voice's inconsistency simply won't allow her to and that's terribly difficult for any vocalist to come to terms with, let alone a woman renowned by many to have the greatest voice of all time.
You're right. It also doesn't help that her actual live singing is rarely appreciated by the general public anymore, only by lambs.
@@VMariah I don't mind that. I don't think she does either. Ironically, I think that works quite well in her favor as the general pubic are too dumb to pick up on her lip sycning when she uses current vocals, so it garners great reviews like the vegas show is getting. HOWEVER, mariah has never performed for the GP, she performs for the Lambily and she knows that we know the tea. That's what's gotta be hard for her. On the one hand she doesn't want to deceive us, but on the other she still wants to sing and we're still buying tickets and she doesn't want to let us down, so mama does what she has to do.
I want to cry reading this and it's one thing that escapes people's mind easily. I cannot imagine the level of distress she is feeling knowing her chords is getting progressively worse over time. I think it's incredibly unsettling even when she first realised this condition post Daydream era.
@@alifishakayob3633 Without sounding tooo dramatic but it's the equivilant of mourning a death, especially for someone like her where her voice is sooooo much of her identity, both in the way she identifies her ownself and the way the world identifies her. If she can't do the one thing that's synonymous with existing to her, then where does that leave her? It's so heaftbreaking. I think post Daydream she's been able to adjust her voice and her technique to work around her limitations because she had so much in her arsenal...with each passing year she loses a bit here and a bit there and now it just seems that it's the hardest it's ever been to cover up her limitations and that's also gotta be hard to deal with. The worst part is she's not ready to stop singing and stop performing...she's one of those artists that actually likes the work. Music is iin her veins and she's gotta sing. So for people to be telling her to hang it up is the most insulting thing for someone like her to hear. She's not ready and she will not be pushed out until she's ready.
For 2023 LA Pride Mariah sang a touching Rainbow interlude however the ending was lipped. I did appreciate her love to the lambs in that performance. She said “You got to get through the storm before the sun comes back.” I hope her sun - her voice and energy - comes back in like Emancipation 2.0 for MC16.
I think we can have hope for Merry Christmas 30 this year, cause Mariah has never been really low energy like this for more than year in the past right? So if she started in Qatar last year then I have a feeling she might make an energy comeback toward the end of this year

*I agree wholeheartedly & love that you/someone is documenting all of this & sort of holding her 'accountable' (?) as this is the worst shes sounded, & most shes lipped ever in her entire life. I mean, really, each song is 99% lipped, with MAYBE [if we are talking vision of love, or ILL BE THERE, etc] 10 seconds of live vocals. ---- this is undoubtedly the saddest, era especially when I know for a fact, I wouldnt be singing the way I do without Mariah & her being my musical teacher for my entire life... so to be a singer, now watching the woman who inspired me to even sing, struggling to sing, is such a depressive moment to be alive for/witness....*

THATS how you establish your current range & allow ur voice to grow & overall strengthen... however, I DO not see Mariah allowing herself to adhere to this logic.. I feel pride is behind that choice & I feel because she never likes being alone... ALSO, I believe she has been very adamant about NOT removing or getting surgical treatment of her VOCAL NODULES, as its what allows her to whistle ... but, lets be real yall... she cant even whistle now, or barely does... I feel at this point, NOT getting the surgery is more risky than getting the surgery...*
*LASTLY, I feel she REFUSES to acknowledge her vocal change, she REFUSES to change her classics to fit her current voice... if only she knew how important vocal reinvention is for her.. she would be back on the top... changing her songs to be more JAZZ-LIKE, keeping the same melodic structure, but with a lower range, different inflections etc... AND, most importantly, SHE NEEDS A VOCAL COACH... I know pride is another reason that MAYBE preventing her to get one, I dont blame her, cus imagine telling MARIAH how to sing or what she should do different etc.. when she most likely influenced that person to be a vocal coach to begin wit... however, she would benefit greatly & I truly believe the MORE she lips, the MORE her vocal chord muscles will weaken/deteriorate, & the more her technique & diaphragm will weaken.... there is a lot for her to work on from MY perspective. aagain, this is just my opinion.. I love her as an artist. she still makes incredible music, is a phenomenal writer & still has a beautiful voice & tone, I just think it's TIME FOR A REINVENTION of her IMAGE & SOUND.... she needs to try something NEW. that fits her CURRENT voice!!!!!!*
*oh yea, lastly, per observing her recent performances, watching how defeated, slow, & almost depressive her body language is, I think MAYBE medication might also be affecting her voice or at least her STAGE presence or behavior? cus Mariah has never acted like this.... however, I could imagine how depressed one would be, especially her, knowing she has to now lip 99% of her songs, I feel it depresses her to even do it, hence her outward response while singing.. I know I wouldnt be happy as a singer. I PRAY she gets all the help she needs to reinvent herself & SANG again.. Phenomenal write up on Mariah nowadays and what most lambs are thinking. Mariah never stays down for too long, what i’ve learned as a fan for 10+ years is to NEVER count Mimi out, as she always switches things up. I think her lipping everything now is a reflection of her self awareness and hope she’s getting things together behind the scenes so when she decides to sing live again her voice will be in the best shape possible. Call me delusional but I feel like mariah’s really cleaning things up in her personal life and career.
Good comment on the vocal standpoint. I would beg to differ that her “nodules” are basically an internet legend. Yes, she has them. No, that is not at all the center of her vocal problems. Lack of care, in other words, laziness is front and center. A good singer at any age must train and exercise the voice for the duration of their entire life. There is no shortcut. The shortcut is lip syncing and looking pretty. Clearly these two things are her two priorities. Not her instrument.
You think before this series she’s never been held accountable before? Her vocal deterioration and lipping has been common knowledge since 2005. All the Lambs knew that Macys performance was heavily lipped. Lambs were even discussing vocal chord steroid shots in 2003 and 2010 as an explanation for her improvements those years. This is just her being tired of having to fight her inconsistent voice.
@@hellojeromeHer vocal decline was certainly not due to laziness. She had produced many many of songs when she first had that decline (1997-2002), and even more when her voice took a bigger hit (2005-2008). She and others who have worked with her have described how much of a workaholic she is in the studio and allegedly she did 100 takes for ‘Honey’. She isn’t lazy, she most likely just overestimated her voice’s ability to stay healthy. Back in 1995 she discussed how she didn’t care for vocal technique and in 1993 she said she almost never listened to her mother’s vocal advice. She continued to do the BWT even after the massive decline in her voice when she could have chosen to take a rest year because she’s the type of person who always wants to work. That tour was almost fully live even with all her issues. Every time she damaged her voice in the 90s/00s, she always made a swift recovery and she most likely thought she’d go on like that forever, and now she’s suffering the consequences.
Lovers and Friends were so interesting because even the live notes were so pitchy and her voice just sounded so tired and dry. She must have not had enough sleep or her chords were inflammed.

as a lamb for years this saddens me as much as everyone, but my opinion is she should focus on raising her children, and live a happy life. Her legacy is set on stone and she’s immortalized as the songbird supreme.

@@callisto132 She's lip syncing at her concerts because she still wants to sing live and perform and interact with her fans, but her voice is unpredictable, inconsistent and extremely delicate at this stage of her career. After the NYE 2016 fiasco Mariah cannot take another hit to her career and legacy and she cannot rely on her voice to deliver every night...coupled with the fact that the press will report a bad note 10x quicker than a stellar note, Mariah has chosen to play it safe and prerecord her vocals. To her credit, the vocals she's lip syncing to for her new show are 100% new and pre recorded using her current voice. And it's not to say Mariah can't sing...she can...amazingly well in fact, but instead of being able to hit the note or nail the line on the first try, it may take her a few takes. And on stage, you don't have a few takes, only one. So in order to preserve her legacy, whille at the same time continuing to do what brings her the most joy in her life (singing), she's reached a compromise with herself and the stage which is to lip sync to newly recorded vocals in an effort to make the best out of an unfortunate situation.

I know this was more about her lipping, but it was and still is concerning how much she was pushing the live stuff. She sounded extremely winded and I don’t think nodules can be blamed here and neither can her breakup. I hope she’s okay
I feel like there is the mental aspect of bipolar disorder affecting her, but I feel like there might a physical health issue as well.
To me, the main factor during 2022 and 2023 is her mental state, mainly her bipolar disorder. to me it's very clear that during 2022 she was having this "mania" episode typical in the disorder, the way she's moving it's very VERY excesive, it made it seems as she has the energy that fans are currently looking but to me it seems like she's on the edge of a panic attack, it also coincide that the mania episode coincides with lack of sleep and not being able to control yourself, leading her to a more easy vocal fatigue due to the lack of rest.
Mid 2023-now is when the other state of the disorder appear, the more "depressive" state, this can coincide with her and Tanaka breaking up, but now she seems more stiff, barely moving and not showing much expression, similar to 2017. however this more "off" state and the fact that she's not singing much leads to her to get some better rest on her voice, leading to a more concistent and healty approach to her vocals

@@VMariah I rewatched her My All performace and her attempts was seriously admirable considering her belting capability. She made up for it in sophisticated runs and rasp. Like "I'd RISK my LIFEEE". She really gave it her all in that performace.
i just finished the video and what really bothers me is how her energy dropped so low in just months…was it just the vocals? the breakup with tanaka? or something more serious happened? like, what was going thru her head when performing during those times. like she doesnt even try to make the lipping believable
How would you feel if something about yu that made you unique, was your way of earning a living, made you special, made up a large part of your personal identity and something about yourself you prided in above all other attributes has suddenly become a struggle...or something that you simply can no longer do anymore? Your energy would be low too. For her, it's singing...and for a singer not to be able to sing the way he/she wants, the way they know how, and the way they have their entire life can be debilitating, depressing, and tragic.

Great video!! I think it's worth mentioning that she didn't lip the entire Emotions intro on the first Toronto show and even attempted the staccato run over the track, but ultimately decided to lip the full intro for the rest of the tour. Also the track she used in 2022 is slightly different from that live performance from 2018 (especially in the beginning). It also sounds very studio-esque to me, it was probably recorded in a rush a few days before the opening night.
it makes me quite sad how the last MSG show of the 1&A tour was almost fully lipped, that was the show i went to and it sounded so impressive how well her voice appeared to be. i hope she’s doing alright because i feel like there is something emotionally or physically going on regarding her confidence in live singing and personal life..
It's crazy how much better she's suddenly gotten at lip-synching as well. Before 2022, her tracks were alwaysvery obviously tracks, sounded quite distinct from the live mic feed regardless of her voice's state, and her physical lipping was incredibly unbelieveable. I think this was on purpose so the Lambs knew which vocals were really her, while locals still saw a great show. Now, everything is so realistic that it's like shes trying to fool everyone :/
I completely agree. And she's even doing super small things like making the VOL whistle slightly different across different nights just to make it sound live. Like who would even notice that except for lambs...
I think the reason why she lipped some 'easier' parts in the 2023 christmas is because they were very airy vocals and she already sounds dry and scratchy by default now so singing the airy parts would have made her voice even more dry and rigid. The belts she did live were probably easier bc they did not dry out of her voice. Also the girl should just get that nodules surgery atp (i'd rather her lose her whistles entirely over sacrificing her vocal fluidity and chest range) and then get like a year minimum of vocal training. This is just sad.

That emotions whistle was very airy, and usually her studio whistles dont possess that airy quality. Live mics process it way differently compared to studio mics, due to volume differences & equalizer differences, so i think its live. She didnt have great whistles that night anyway so maybe she struggled
I don't know why but when she started fully lipping songs like VOL, Emotions, MIH, IBT, Hero, ABMB and My All, those specific 7 songs actually, it kinda made me feel like something precious was taken away from her live performing. All through the years, those songs were the ones where I think she would give it her all. I wasn't fazed at all when she started fully lipping songs like Honey, WBT (at least not as much), Shake It Off, or even Love Takes Time.
She really start lipping VOL at the perfect time because Bey lips CIL fully now and only do the last adlibs already and Celine been lipping where does my heart beat now since 2010.

It makes sense too because the vocals of these shows are all new (which i can appreciate and salute her for resinging everything) and because they're new she hasn't had time to learn them like she knew her older pre records so she has no other choice but to heavily rely on the monitors. As a fan, it's so distracting, but as a person...I totally get it.

12:38 I said this before I think, but I don't think it was intentionally dubbed out. With the way the special was rushed out, I feel like it was just a case of they just so happened to use the night 1 audio with the video from night 2 (cuz there were two nights recorded for the special, iirc).

I don't know... she is just not breathing right... she looks and sounds constricted, throaty... her voice is not coming out and when she tries, she's hoarse... I wonder why she doesn't go to a good voice coach and revise her tecnique from scratch, at this point !
This is my first comment on this channel but I want to say thank you and I appreciate you for making this kind of content because it’s not easy to reveal the truth and deeply analyze the whole tabooness of lip syncing, especially with Mariah’s case. I do believe that there are certain key factors that could be the reason why Mariah isn’t as confident with her voice or seems low energy on stage. 1. Menopause (and I’m sure a lamb linked a video about singing with menopause), 2. Medication for her Bipolar Disorder (knowing these medication have very strong effects and can make you lethargic), 3. Her Breakup with Bryan Tanaka (it was her longest relationship to date), and 4. Knowing that her voice isn’t the same/changing (it’s pretty obvious that Mimi knows that her voice isn’t the way she wants it to sound or how it used to sound). I know some of the lambily have said that maybe it’s time to get rid of the nodules. While I agree with that, the entire process is very difficult and even with surgery, they can possibly end up growing back. Im also thinking that she doesn’t want a similar incident happen to her that happened to Julie Andrews. For context, Julie Andrews was in the Sound of Music and had a 4 octave range before the nodules. When she found out, she tried to remove them with surgery but ending up losing her voice. This was back in the 90s, the same decade where Mariah found her fame. Also, I think that Mariah feels like if she removes her nodules, she loses her prized possession (her whistle register). Another thing is that some of the lambily has also expressed is that she should get a vocal coach, full time. I know that she has had vocal teachers before throughout her career but I don’t think that she has been working on getting that voice semi back through vocal training, maybe she has behind the scenes but who knows? Again, this was a great video and I can’t wait to see the final part of this topic

What makes me feel sad is Mariah herself is more aware than anyone else that her voice is slowly changing and become uncontrollable compared to her young self.

Ppl don't realize mariah is still human and critics are always on her and that really affects her mentally I think the reason why she seems to have low energy is because she goes through depressive episodes wich makes her have low energy and the sad thing is she can't controll when they happen and I think the stress really triggers it too. I do think that we as a lambily need to stop and take a step back on focusing on her voice and look at her mental health state. I also do think after 2024 she shouldn't do any touring except for christmas touring and stop and get therapy if she dosent have it and get a vocal coach to help her.

I see you're points about the 2022 Emotions E6, but I still do think it's live! if she knew her whistles were in good quality that night (which she clearly did based off all the amazing attempts), she wouldn't need to keep her face relaxed to focus on whistling. Back when she consistently performed Emotions live, she always scrunched her face just for the drama of it all! And the texture could just be how she chose to hit the note. I'm not 100% sure either way to be fair

As a vocal coach and a huge fan of Mariah I can say she does all this because she understands she’s a legacy act with a very delicate instrument and it seems she’d rather preserve her voice for studio recordings as opposed to fleeting live moments that only the fans are paying attention to which honestly makes a lot of sense. She’s focusing on her legacy and on the future of her children

Thing is…I think her voice became over-rested in quarantine. If an olympic sprinter doesn’t exercise for 2 years straight and just hit the ground thereafter, they cannot expect to be top notch.
I used to think so too and idk why everyone forgets it but she mentioned in like 2021/2022 on twitter spaces she had 170 (unsure on the exact number but i remember it was really close to 200) hours of recorded music

4:06 I think the main reason is that in these first performance after quarantine, she wanna prove that she still had that Quarantine era’s consistency in serving live vocals which were before always lipped in those days. So basically she just wanna prove that she can sing the old lipped notes live by recording raw, new lip tracks at that time 😭

To be honest, watching Lovers and Friends live made me kinda sad for one particular reason. I became a fan of Mariah in 2018 when I watched her Vision of Love performance at SNL and I took a deep dive in her career and realized she's never lip synced that song. It made me happy that the song that made her famous is so sentimental to her that she chose to never lip sync it. So when I noticed she was lip syncing VOL, I was so disappointed. I really did not care that she lip synced her other songs, but idk, Vision of Love is different to me. Anyways, I am being kinda dramatic haha.
I m amaze how her sound engineer keep up with her lip sync trick,because it change here and there lot of time.

Yeah that one was interesting. But then again it is a super low note (G#2) even for current Mariah. I think she was just going crazy in the studio as always and decided the vocal was almost too good to not use or something. Like she didn't have to go that low obviously, but maybe she thought since it sounded extra impressive it would make up for any of her inconsistencies in live singing that day

Ok so I was thinking what would lead to such a drastic decline in Mariah’s voice other than being overworked. Usually tours like Rainbow and TAOM make sense cause her chords are tired. But honestly 2022 kinda reminds me of Oprah 1997, cause I think she said she hadn’t been singing for a month- and 2022 is probably similar except for losing more technique. And I’m glad in a way that 2022 happened because I think it definitely forced Mariah to take care of her voice better- it was the first time she realized that resting chords and sleeping 14 hours isn’t really going to save her voice.

Also for the final 2022 Christmas show, I think someone said she might’ve warmed up. I think it makes sense considering Dec. 13’s vocals 💀. Like she probably was kinda sad about her vocal state, and cared about the fact that it was televised. But obviously she did not warm up nearly as much as Beacon- or maybe she tried but realized she couldn’t without getting more tired

This is the best and most accurate investigation of her voice I have ever seen. The interesting thing is that the Hark intros from 2023 Xmas are some of her strongest vocals for about 5-7 years

I haven’t finished watching the video, however I do want to point out that I think she used different tracks on December 13 (the night we all want to forget) because she was probably planning on that being the date she would air on her televised performance, but as we all know, her voice was not up to par, which is why she probably opted to take clips from both MSG dates and mix them up. On December 13 she also used her Christmas Special Joy To The World vocals as her lipped track, so I assume that’s what she had in mind.

I want to share my thoughts, I Love Mariah like everyone else here ( I hope ) since i discover her i haven’t stop listening and watching her performances, As a lamb make me sad to see her in this stage but more than lip syncing. Look at her, she seems different, well at least of what i seen in the last months she looks with lack of energy, we would never or at lest now know what is happening to her, but wish her the best cause she said that #mc16 is coming but, is she ready? are we? i think she should take time to you know, feel her self, instead of doing more shows, or maybe im wrong and she is fine and she just wants to lip because she is recording her next album, that might be too. But yeah thats a very good observation tho because this is a very unlikely behavior from Mariah where she lips straight up everything INCLUDING vision of love. I wanna be optimistic and say she removed her nodules and thats why she stuck to lip syncing in 2024 specifically and her tone suddenly changed to a very light and nasal voice. Almost like daydream where she had smaller nodules which can definitely be a sign that she removed them. But once again we don’t really know so only time will tell.
Removing the nodules would likely mean she'd lose the whistle register - I think that's the reason why she hasn't and she won't have surgery.
