Now this is actually a case where her mic remains on and audible the whole time despite a bit of a backing track. But it wouldn't have been possible without either 2016 or 2019's brave playback choices!

This one was hard because she's so consistent with using the same formula in every performance, but I tried my best.
Did Mariah Carey lose her belting range?

Basically my theory is that there are four times in Mariah's career when her belting range permanently decreased, which divides things up into five phases. The losses are probably a combination of both natural lowering and vocal damage.

The belts in this song are so underrated! I was surprised how little she lipped this song in the 2010s too.
She never dodged this belt

I'm not talking so much about the notes she hit, but the fact that she always tried to belt this part as hard as she could in literally every single performance of VOL, no matter what condition she was in. It's not like other parts of the song that she would sometimes just dodge altogether.

I'm really grateful for the late 97 great performances of very hard songs like Butterfly and My All! SNL's My All and Letterman's Butterfly were very close to the studio version before developing her rasp in 98. 97 had few imperfect days (to her standards), but giving that she recorded the whole album that year and had great performances of even harder songs in late 97; I'd still say that her prime was 1990-1997.

This is fantastic! As a long-time fan since her first album came out when I was a kid, I'm so happy with the songs chosen for this. We don't get enough of Make It Happen or Can't Let Go. I'm very happy those songs are included. They're two of my favorites from that era. Also enjoying the I'll Be There cover. Trey and Mariah are a vocal match made in musical heaven.

i hate how locals always put the Fly Like A Bird at grammys to knowledge Mariah live vocals and it's like 80% playback 😭😭
ikr they should acknowledge stuff like VOL and MIH more often compared to that performance😭
Are you sure 3:58 is lipped? It doesn't make sense that she lips this low part then attempts the next belt because I saw the performance and all of her belts sounded and looked live.
