04/27/21 UPDATE: Mariah Carey referenced this performance by saying, "I didn't do so great on that - I need to watch it again, you guys." Yeah i read it somewhere to she was sick because of which her voice sounded different it was raspy. But that just added more to the performance. True living legend. I have only been listening to her recently. I wish the present generation instead of complaint that today's music sucks will search out for older artist like Mariah and appreciate her now rather than when it's too late.

The thing that separates MC from the countless list of other singers who use melisma is the insane musicianship. Her melismas always seem to fit perfectly with the melody and tempo of the song, to the point where you don't even realise just how much riffing she's actually doing. It virtually never comes across as excessive, to me at least. It always seems to add meaning and expression without being done for the sake of it or to show off. Too many singers often get carried away with showing off fancy runs that display great skill and technique but little to no musicality. That for me is why MC is one of the GOATs.
This kind of singing style still exists today. It's the reason why almost every great female singer in this generation is always called "The Next Mariah". Even in the Philippines, Mariah has always been the standard in singing.
No one will EVER be able to replace Mariah. Her recorded live performances from 20 years ago, still gives life today. And I love her hair like this. Goddess
