The Ultimate Tip for Perfect Mixes Every Time in Cubase (A/B Referencing)

  • Hey guys! I created a poll a while ago about which DAW you guys are using and the vast majority seems to be using Cubase - which happens to be my favourite DAW too :) So I thought I'd do more videos on Cubase!
    On this video, I show you how to do A/B referencing in Cubase when mixing, mastering and producing. This is one of my favourite Cubase Pro tricks of all time! And the best part is it's FREE to set up and use :)
    Cubase Pro: new.steinberg.net/cubase/?_sp...

    If I am not mistaken, the only thing in your setup that is missing is level matching. The processed channel is way louder than the unprocessed one; so you don't fall for the louder-better illusion. Cheers from Serbia!

    Having an average of 5 track versions of the same song to master in one session makes setting up Control a perfect reason to say a HUGE thank you to you Master Dom of Cubase and everything music production. Loving your Cubase tutorials, which are really helping me understand its functions way more clearly. I also love and need to setup my Keylab61mk11, so I’ll be going back to closely watch the ‘controller’ setup tutorial you made - which is also fantastic mate!

  • @Art_Of_Sound
    @Art_Of_Sound 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great contributions to the community Dom! Just a note re: other perspectives...I used similar to this previously but the missing element is loudness. Its vital to make equal loudness comparisons for anything except loudness which these days (loudness) is a moot point (level is now set by the streaming services etc and squished 'loud' mixes sound tiny). I ended up eventually using 'Reference' (Im not getting paid for it hehe) but Im sure the others are quite good and what it does give you is instant loudness levelling and a lot of other comparison eg dynamics/freq distribution etc. It saves so much time and so much faster to setup etc but if you dont want to spend $ this is a great way to get started; but you get what you pay for.
    More than the referencing you have shown, is the fact that you cover aspects which are a bit blurry in the manual and give them real world application. Excellent!

    Nice Dom. You´ve just made my Cubase project Template even more sexy. We´ve been using Mute / Unmute /Solo and it´s OK so long as you don´t start turning on and off tracks in your mix. This is a much better solution... "All our times have come: DON´T FEAR THE CONTROL ROOM!".

    I have a much simpler way. Ctrl-Click a channel's solo button and it will be the only one soloed. So you can just Ctrl-Click the two solo buttons back and forth with all the same benefits. I always use a separate mixbus bus all my tracks go to instead of the stereo out. The mixbus does go to the stereo out which has no plugins on it. I mute the commercial reference track(s) and then can just toggle its solo button on and off which is better than my first way. So clicking the solo button on the reference track plays only the reference track while everything else is muted because of that one solo button, and when I hit solo again on the reference track that solo goes off and the mute which was also on the reference track automatically pops back on. Seamless switch between the two.

    Dom, Love everything you do! It's a good tip that I will try. Question: Can you also do something similar by having a muted ref track in your project and using the Listen button to go straight to stereo out while bypassing everything on the master buss for similar effect? I don't know if its the same but I use all my cues while recording and was hoping not to burn one to ref. thoughts?
