I mentioned in the last Mili song reaction video that for her work in Library of Ruina specifically, her songs are either used for the opening and ending themes or for a major boss theme. What's cool about her boss themes is that in the game, the boss fight starts with the typical floor battle theme and floor background, only for the boss' power to absolutely warp the background into something befitting them, with the boss theme replacing the normal floor theme. Imagine you're gearing up for a normal fight, when suddenly the environment melts into the blazing Great Wall imagery you see here and this amazing Chinese-style song starts playing. Boss fights in Library of Ruina are something else. When you hear Mili's vocals in a fight, you quickly learn you're -about to get your teeth kicked in- in for an incredible experience.
The experience is even more amplified when you know the context behind the fight. The boss in question is basically a woman on a tearful mission to avenge her dead husband, and the song is essentially about how unfathomably sad she is about not telling him she loved him before he died. Her conflict makes up an entire arc in the game's second-to-last chapter, and the boss fight where Iron Lotus plays is the culmination and climax of her story. The context alone elevates the song from simply great to unforgettable. It also helps that the boss itself is hard. Ball-bustingly hard. Mostly because she burns everyone with prohibitive amounts of fire, and then proceeds to set the fire on fire. So much freakin' fire...
Ahem. So you were on the right track when you said that Mili was contracted to do several songs for the game. The band, especially the singer, Cassie Wei, were pretty famous before Library of Ruina, so it's safe to say that having her songs in-game attracted a lot of players. Cassie's Chinese (the boss is also Chinese-inspired), so she managed to fill this song to the brim with Chinese cultural references you can look up. You're also right in that her songs tend to be telling a story most of the time. Figuring out and analyzing the narrative of the song is a popular pastime for Mili fans. If you're enjoying her work now, she might be coming back for Library of Ruina's sequel, Limbus Company, so her time with Project Moon likely hasn't ended yet.
P.S. It's great that your reaction videos are encouraging more players to try out LoR. Project Moon is still an indie studio, so any exposure they can get for their games is welcome, especially since they are so uniquely great in story, worldbuilding, gameplay, and of course, music.

I personally consider Purple Tear to be way stronger because of sheer amount of powerstacking and way better cards (Xiao has nothing on Duel or Violet Blade, especially when the latter also happens to deal extra damage and benefits even more from power, usually resulting in a half-dead librarian in one hit you can't really stop). She also teleports to another floor and most likely kills everyone there for free emotion levels, which also happens to reset whatever you had going on the first floor.
      Kali is a joke though.

Except Iori's Reception effectively gives you 3 floors. Even in spite of her power buffs, she can be worn down by sheer attrition, especially if you're the type of person to have floors pre-ready in case of stuff going pear-shaped.
Xiao's fight is single floor. There's significantly less room for mistakes in comparison.

    • @anothenblue2630
      @anothenblue2630 ปีที่แล้ว

@@elvinmacospag6989 one of those floors is more likely to get killed off in two scenes after she teleports and whichever floor is the last can also fall really quickly if you don't have like Fullstop stuff since everyone's gonna be at EL0 while she's at max. There's no guarantee that the other floors even have decent keypages on them yet.
Xiao is TWO floors actually, but she's also far less threatening on her own since she doesn't have enough power or dumb cards (aside from one, but you can block it at least), nullifies what little she has and also has means of staggering herself faster. She doesn't fully recover from stagger either.

Spoiler alert: The second Philip fight when he awakens his ego. Project Moon actually has an interview with Cassie, the singer, on their channel as a bonus video for their 5 year anniversary last year, and yeah she has a pretty normal speaking voice lol, though I do think she has like a very cute quality to her voice that I feel contributes to her unique singing sound. Mili has 5 members in total with her, a bassist, a drummer, an illustrator and the overall composer + guitarist (who is married to Cassie! :D)
Iron Lotus is probably my favourite of their LOR songs, being Chinese myself I love all of the traditional music inspirations and cultural references in the song, and it's just a banger on top of everything. The character the song represents is such a badass too and I'm glad she got such an amazing track that drives home all her convictions and regrets that fuel her story :')

Cassie Wei, the singer of Mili, is such an inspiring person for me as she's a Canadian living in Japan with Chinese descendance, so she sings English, Chinese, Japanese and French in her songs - and then sometimes even the own language Mili made up, which I don't think you have heard (yet because I have requested one song with a bit of it :'D )
This one is surprising for me again now because lately I've been listening to an official remix version and it's different at parts, so I was caught of guard a few times here xD (If you're interested, look up the Key Ingredient album, both String Theocracy and Iron Lotus have been remixed by Mili in that one!)
Also yes, Cassie's singing style is so distinct which makes it so hard to sing along Dx

Mili and Project Moon have a weird love story.
Mili songs always had this beautyful, intriguing flavour of an futuristic, doll-like yet synthetic sound, like innocent AI. Someone once made an AMV to her song "Execute(me)" with character from PM first game, Lobotomy Corporation. The lyrics fit the game theme SO well the amv soon exceededpopularity of top uploads of the song itself, and people begged that two creators get in touch.
For the Library of Ruina, being LC sequel, Mili made most of the important songs, including very opening.
Shortly after someone made a fake-opening video of LC and LoR using one of Myht&Roid songs.
The next PM game trailer and opening song is made by both Mili and Myth&Roid.
A thing about Mili that's more unique by her voice style is how she paces words in the songs. Her lyrics are AMAZING, three- or four layer deep at least, awe-inducing images and graphic stories. Yet the way she paces the sentences feels like english was new to her, like she herself was AI learning how to speak. It makes singing her songs really challenging.

  • @AnemoneMeer
    @AnemoneMeer ปีที่แล้ว +61

I would suggest listening to "And Then Is Heard No More". Iron Lotus is the theme of one of the last bosses in the game, who's narrative is a mirror of a much earlier bosses theme. As another commenter has said, the boss is all fire all the time everything is burning. Both Iron Lotus and And Then Is Heard No More are tied to bosses with very similar mechanics, stories, and completely different resolution.
For Iron Lotus, the boss the theme is attached to is, by the point this theme kicks off, bleeding from the head, bleeding from the mouth, bones broken, body failing, and has taken more damage than any human enemy in the game (even bosses after her) would consider reasonable. She is a dead woman walking, and in that state of near death, has found absolute resolve. Cue an absolutely gigantic healthbar showing up, theme music override, and the boss turning your party into charcoal with fire magic in a setting where people *don't have magic*. Even if she wins, she's probably not able to walk out of there alive anymore, so that leaves just one goal before she passes on. Killing you.
    ------------------------
As for Library of Ruina itself, the game is niche for a good reason. While the game itself, and its content, is legitimately some of the best indie work ever produced, it asks a LOT from its players. Queen of Hatred, a relatively early game boss is such a casual filter that it's been referred to as a vertical difficulty spike, and she's among the easiest bossfights in the game. The game is a deckbuilder RPG, and you'd think that would preclude it from having boss fights with double digit phase counts and enemy passive lists so long they need a scrollbar for their scrollbar. There are fights where you straight up feel like you just read a whole novel trying to just figure out what the bosses gameplan is, realize you did not fully grasp it, and end up steamrolled.
On the flipside of this extreme player investment requirement though is the fact that the game rewards said investment with one of the deepest battle systems in any game ever. The game demands that level of investment because it wants you to engage with the mechanics and plan ahead, and while there is often a ton of stuff orbiting the core mechanics in the form of passive effects and status conditions, once you grasp the basics, the core system is both very easy to understand and VERY strategic. You play cards against the enemy cards, and resolve the events on the cards with dice rolls with the higher roll winning. Faster characters can redirect slower characters to force specific card duels. The core is simple, but when there are 25 actions on the field being thrown around by 10 characters, even that simple core can result in mental pretzels as you try to figure out who deals with what and what abilities you simply have to take to the face.
I would highly suggest playing it. You'll almost certainly get sucked in once the game picks up steam. There's so much to it.

The fact that you recognized Mili form Ender Lillies after listening to 2 vocal songs of Library of Ruina shows the power of the individualism the band has and the voice of Cassie Wei being unforgettable.
The thing with Mili is that it falls of the "Trignometry" of modern songs, most of Mili's songs work as Adagios with a story and a reflection for the listeners and its the main appeal of Mili as a band.

This is just one example, but to me it's like the potato chip and chocolate combo of music. It's two tastes that you wouldn't expect to complement each other but hearing the song of a grieving widow pulling herself from the brink conveyed with a voice like Mili's really highlights the tragedy of it all.

The way you said that Mili song is like telling a story is a big hit, because all of Mili song, not only in Library of Ruina, she sing always like doing a storytelling of the theme or character in their animation MV illustration or video.
For this song, in their original MV in Mili channel, they using a cute mascot character and just doing some cute dancing, why a cute chara mascot rather than the boss in library of ruina? because The boss in this song is a woman that love a cute things, so they're using a cute mascot instead of the boss it's self so it's not gonna spoil everythings in game too much
For this Iron Lotus, is basically a story from the woman dragon boss PoV about the boss rage feelings toward us (The Library) for taking away her beloved man on some fight before and her regrets because not telling all of her feeling toward her beloved before they going to The Library and gone just to become one of many collection books in The Library.

I won’t lie, since I was a fan of Mili and Limbus (another game Mili did music for), so I listened to Iron Lotus well before playing LoR.
I eventually bought the game, played 100 damn hours, and got to the fight where this plays.
God, I don’t think a boss theme could ever have such a big impact even _after_ I listened to it. It’s just a whole ‘nother thing when you listen to it in the game, I can’t believe it.

So, while you are correct in that Mili is a much larger group than just making Library of Ruina songs (they have done opening themes for a LOT of popular anime), one reason that Ruina fans go crazy over her involvement with the series is that for the songs they typically make that are not created for anime, they usually go for a vibe where the sound of the song is innocent or even upbeat, but the lyrics of the song are about things like betrayal, suicide, and other very depressing themes.
For Ruina, the game already has a pretty depressing vibe, so they were given full reign to make that exact sort of song for every song, and it works out fantastically. If you want a non-video game song to listen to that has the sort of vibe they usually go for, Nine Point Eight has always been a very good example.

you were mentioning Gospel... The sequel to Library of Runia, Limbus Company, has a song called "Between Two Worlds" (also by Mili, who did many of the Runia songs) that is both Gospel and... well I guess the typical 'stage' progression of their songs. heh

When this music plays, after all the bangers of the Library, for the very first time, you realise that you're no longer the boss in the game.

It’s less their lawyers and more so just the Automated system most music producers/distributors have when it comes to content ID. Project Mili themselves stated that if it’s for the game, or transformative work, just refute the game and they’ll accept it.
It’s mostly there to prevent straight up re-uploads.
