As you can see, the classic dissonance between Mili lyrics and music strikes yet again! Yeah, this is one where that disconnect hits particularly hard. The boss where this song plays has some very tragic circumstances, as well. It's basically about someone who tried to break free from their fate as a cog in the dystopian city he is forced to carry out injustices for, only to realize that everything he did to assert his freedom has been part of the city's plan from the beginning. The fight happens while he is the middle of a violent existential breakdown from this realization. It's one of the game's most depressing story arcs, and this song is appropriately melancholy and bluesy to fit the sadness of the fight.
The song's lyrics fit the game's events really well, but they also can have a non-game interpretation. The lyrics are full of these arbitrary, nonsensical orders that people have to carry out as part of their roles, which can be metaphors for all the mundane and meaningless jobs and routines adults are forced to take to survive in the urban/modern world. And when people try to assert their freedom and individuality in this world, they get quickly beaten down and absorbed into the system. It goes back into the game's whole existential theme about how much freedom we truly have, and how much we can truly be ourselves in a civilization that expects so much out of us. The song in general has that neon, late-night-city sort of atmosphere to it, and it can easily be seen as the backdrop for the singer stumbling through the dirty streets going through despair over their place in life. Oh, and the whole "don't go home until you finish reading the value of e" thing with the numbers at the end? The number e is an irrational number, which goes on forever, so the "joke" is that the singer can never go back home. They cannot go back "home" to innocence. To happier days. Nothing.
Yeah, this song just gets heavier and heavier the more you think about it. But it gives you a lot of food for thought. And it's a big reason why I enjoy Mili's songs.
I play all sorts of games. RPGs, puzzle games, adventure games, stealth games, visual novels, Eastern games, Western games, AAA games, indie games, etc. So it doesn't surprise me that I stumbled onto this game, now that I look back on it. I usually find out about games through their soundtrack, and this game is no exception. But let me tell you, this series (Lobotomy Corporation, Library of Ruina, Limbus Company (the newest one)) really is bizarre, in the best possible way. It has this special, unique brand of grimdark and weird and twisted to its stories, that I can tell a game is a Project Moon game from a glance. But their stories also give you much to think about, and they have more depth to them than you expect going in. You don't know what to expect at all going in, actually, but in the end, people stay for the great characters and story, complex gameplay, and the amazing soundtrack.

The flower on the icon is the blue aconite, also known as wolfsbane, representing caution, treachery, and misanthropy.
Even without the context of the game, Children of the City is a song about the futility of free will and depression, made clear by the very first line.
"Sleep for 800 hours per day"; improper sleeping habits and lack of regard for self-care is considered a symptom of depression.
In case you're confused, the last line "Do not go home until you finish reading the value of E" is effectively telling you that you can never go home.
E is Euler's Number, an irrational number like pi. It DOESN'T end.

In an interview with Mili, Cassie Wei (the vocalist and lyricist for Mili) said that she has a hobby of making stories but never really liked writing, so she uses music to tell stories. Pretty much all Mili songs have some form of narrative/story to them (even the ones written in fictional languages). It’s one reason why Mili is such a good fit with Project Moon, who like mixing narrative and gameplay.

To give a bit of context to the song:
Basically, this is the theme of a character that has realized that all of their actions to try and expose what can only be described as a “machine prophet” that gives out ludicrous orders (like putting nails inside a child’s birthday cake) under penalty of death if not carried out as a hoax were actually preordained by said prophet. Realizing this, he falls into complete and utter despair, realizing that everything he did to try and get people out of this stupid system was in vain. Through that despair and utter hopelessness at knowing he never had free will, he ends up transforming into an entity made solely to carry out the prophet’s orders.

For Context: There is a orginasation called the Index and in their organisation and part of the city that they control, everyone follows the order of the "Prescipt" which are letters with specific orders. If you disobey these orders, you die. Nobody knows what is written until they recieve the order. Sometimes it can be something like - sing a song 3 times or something cruel like - eat glass. These orders make no sense but still they somehow maintaine some sort of hierarchy within the organisation. The boss where this theme is from is one of the agents of the Index. He basically figured out what the origin of these Prescipts is and basically couldn't take that information.

    • @simonnikonov2577
      @simonnikonov2577 ปีที่แล้ว +26

To be more precise: you don't necessarily die. The execution is done by special members - "proxies", and for them it is a prescript as well. Pretty much everyone, except Gloria, knew certain someone was trying to not follow prescripts, but they didn't get prescript to deal with them

Fun fact unrelated to E/Euler's Number: the lyric "I desperately wish to be included in the City's nights" can be taken two ways in-universe.
One is to imply that the singer wishes to be recognized as one of the City's "neon Stars" - as someone powerful, someone others look up to, or as someone to be feared. At the time the battle this song plays in takes place, your Library is already considered a "Star of the City" on its own, having managed to cut down a number of reputable opponents before this point - the only rank you can reach afterwards is "Impuritas Civitatis" (Impurity of the City). In a sense, we are turning them into part of a Star by defeating the boss the song is associated with and using their book's contents to empower ourselves.
The other meaning, well... in the City there's this thing called the Night in the Backstreets - at around 3 AM, a bunch of entities called Sweepers will start roaming around the Backstreets (which are the City's slums) for about half an hour, viciously murdering anyone unlucky enough to not be inside and making their corpses disappear.
Take the above-mentioned lyric, put it into this context, and it goes from "I wish to be a star shining above the City" to "I wish to be out at the time when people who are out are horribly mutilated and never seen again".
TLDR: depending on how you look at it, "I desperately wish to be included in the City's nights" can be seen either as a longing for a better place or a suicide note.

My favorite Mili song from Ruina, Yan's story arc and the idea behind the Gods of the City is just pretty neat and a good nail in the grimdarkness of the Proyect Moon setting. Like others posted this song requires a little of background to get it but in short its a song about yearning self affirmation of your existance and how the path of the Prescripts (and the cult like criminal syndicate that operates under them) grinds Yan to utterly cosmic despair and the erasure of his self.
All of this alongside the song makes Yan a fan favorite character in Library of Ruina by a wide margin.

Project Moon commisions for many of these songs, giving Mili and Studio EIM a detailed explanation of what they desire to obtain.
Both groups have mentioned how complicated, yet inspiring, these ideas have been, and how they love designing music for Project Moon games. There are some interviews to them in the PM channel, but it really gives a big insight on how attention to detail they put into making these songs fit the game context.

  • @droz74

Ah Children of the City. It's a great mood setter for the Project Moon world as a whole. It does a great job to make you feel like you were in this huge grand dystopia that's cool at first but really depressing if you think about it. The choice of vaporwave for this song was something that had to grow on me, but boy did it grow on me. This is probably my favorite track in the OST now. Most of what I had to say was already said by Kevin, but I'll tack this onto it. In the City the nights are extremely dangerous, full of violent crime and eventually the Sweepers come to "clean up" any dead.. and living that are still outside. So with that context, the lyric "I desperately wish to be include in the city's night" takes a whole new meaning.

As a huge Project Moon fan, as someone who wanted to get into the video game industry growing up, their games are difficult, wonderfully written story & character wise, and always seem to impressively incorporate their game's story & lore into the game's mechanics themselves. They have a ton of passion, and the studio's full of literature geeks which shows in their game's references to all sorts of classical literature and such! Also yes, they have a new game that recently released called 'Limbus Company', taking place after the events of 'Library of Ruina'.
I actually came to Library of Ruina from Lobotomy Corporation, was someone who got to enjoy the experience of the development process with others. I enjoy all sorts of games, and an "SCP Facility Management" game really caught my eye and grabbed my curiosity. And boy did it grab me by the ankles and drag me all the way in, definitely a worthwhile experience though lol.

So a little bit of Context in different thing because learning a bit more is always good.
Mili is the name of the group, the singer is Cassie Wei.
The Gruesome Lyrics and the lyrics that sounds like commans are to represent Prescripts, long story short if you belong in a group called the Index you sometimes get a Prescript telling you a random order that you need to fulfill to stay in the Index (and alive), they are random like "Place Needles into your neighbors birthday cake", "Walk into a three way intersection and wave 2 times to the north" or "Remove the Spine of the 27th person you run into". They are very strange and apparently very random but for some reason they always work into the Index favour.
And lastly, the numbers at the end of the Song are from the line "Do not go home until you finish reading the value of e", e is a mathematical value, kinda like Pi, is infinite.

  • @Lil_lunatic
    @Lil_lunatic ปีที่แล้ว +7

What i love about Mili's songs for project moon is they make a point of making the song relevant to the contextual plot, but also having a more general dual meaning
For example, From a Place of Love in context is about a particular couple and their horrific trauma as a result of being in the crossfire of ruinas plot, but the song to an outside listener can also be about an unhappy arranged marriage
Children of the City in the games context is about the character Yan and his struggles with the nature of free will
But taking the lyrics out of that context is about discontent with being part of the capitalistic machine but seeing no way out and resigning yourself to the fact that were all doomed to our fates from the moment were born
At least thats my general interpretation
This is why Mili released their Ruina related songs as part of an album rather than a soundtrack, because all the songs are intended to stand on their own without needing additional context.
On another note, Project Moon did recently release their new game which mili is also doing the music for (so far theres only 2 mili songs, but theres more to come with updates) but with the game comes several new instrumental tracks that are just absolutely killer and i hope to see you check out some of the Limbus Company soundtrack eventually!

I only learned about this game through Jesse's channel I can't remember what my thoughts were on the other songs he did but I think I liked them.
Fun synth chords, the lower end sounds kind of like synth wave. The speaking vocals give this a really unique vibe, I don't know how to feel about it but it gives me asmr vibes. The groovy parts in here remind me of Street Fighter Alpha music, it's a cool dichotomy having this super flowing and tender high end with the funky lower end. I just payed attention to the lyrics and they are quite saddening and I'm sure many can relate. That is an interesting ending, number then it cuts out. I would have never got that this was a boss theme but the song completely fits the context of the bosses character as far as I can tell from the comments.

The Index follow the prescripts, seemingly random instructions that if they don't follow then, the Proxies are sent to kill them, as for where the prescripts come from...it's revealed in the cutscene before the battle against the boss that this theme is for.

There's the Library of Ruina 'wait, what?' right there. And let's just mix in the Mili tendencies of somewhat upbeat tempo with utterly messed up lyrics.
The two really are made for each other. The song is great because it's both impactful individually, and yet also reflects the context that it refers to fantastically. It's a bit of a trip when the Mili song ends up a bit too literal to the Library of Ruina circumstances.

To answer your question about what kind of people play this game:
I started playing Library of Ruina pretty recently and I actually was drawn to the game because of the music! I mostly play a lot of indie games because I love games who have a strong visual and/or musical identity, and indie games are more likely to be more weird and intense and unique (and Library of Ruina is all of this). I've played stuff like Hollow Knight, Supergiant Games studio games (Bastion, Transistor, Pyre and Hades), Abzû, Darkest Dungeon, Othercide, Hyper Light Drifter... but also some non indie stuff like FFXIV, the Ace Attorney series or Prey (2017). What most of those have in common is good as hell music, I guess!
I definitely recommend Library of Ruina, it's got a really intriguing story so far (I haven't finished the game yet but I'm enthralled) with a cool deck building turn-based strategic type of gameplay.

Yooooo the Del drop! I was so surprised to hear Deltron 3030 brought up in this.
Its a comparison I can definitely see. Deltron 3030 is such a commentary on society, and Milli's works are so often the same. Deep lyrical complexity with a lot of double meaning, and its really beautiful stuff that you can just really dig into on repeat listens.
As one last thing, lots of LoR players have definitely moved onto Project Moons new gacha sequel to it, Limbus Company.
I'm sure you'll get requests for some songs from it, PM fans get...ravenous. Don't hold it against them! Liking underrated games can do that do someone.

Earlier on in the video you had mentioned about the next game after library of ruina that came out recently, yes it's a psudo sequel but it doesn't have any (current) cross with ruina as far as I was seeing. Later on when they add more to the story we might get that. The game is called "Limbus Company" and is a somewhat similar game to ruina, even has some music I'm sure you'd love.
Amd who can say no to more Mili music?

Little bit spoiler for the context of The few first gruesome lyrics are hint to the prescript that the follower of the syndicate and people they protect had and must to do without question or else the prescript will give prescript order to the syndicate to claim the life of anyone that didnt follow and finish their prescript as ordered... All of the prescript massage are are full of ambiguous words... Anyone who received the massage has to interpret it anyway they could(out of the box) some massage are straight forward which make common folk that received it hesitant to do it which cost them their live... All of the massage prescript gave are all entangled and connected with one another... Example...
    (WARNING ITS EXTREMELY GRUESOME)
To : *****, after 3 AM of second day of the 6th month this year, drive on the nearest highway for 3 hours at 80km/h speed, if you see someone wearing red hat and blue shirt on the middle of the road accelerate to 112km/h and paint the highway with their's color.
To : *********, come to the nearest highway after 3 AM of second day of sixth month this year while wearing red hat and blue shirt then stay at each of the highway line for 1 hours each until 7 AM, if you see any cars missed you throw a bag of nails on the previous line you stayed...
Note* actual prescript in the lore are mostly shorter and less elaborate rather than the example above.

Came from Lobotomy Corporation and went to Limbus Company 😎✊
(For context. The prequel and the sequel to Library of Ruina respectively.)
Jokes aside, I don't know, it's weird. Project Moon games and their music are kind of "their own thing", similar to Touhou in that regard, where you just randomly stumble upon it and may or may not fall into a rabbit hole, or you get dragged by someone who's already in there (and then you never leave and it melds into your life haha).

If i Had to say what types of games LOR players play, Strategy and RPGs that focus on really dark stories would first come to mind.
In my case Darkest dungeon was a big connecting point for me cause i liked the grim aspects and turn based strategy (Ignoring of course that i played all of Lobotomy corporation prior)
As for where after. if not Limbus company, (Which im sure you'll also get song requests for because they Slap.) I personally went into FF14. so i guess story and RPG is a good baseline for Ruina players?? iunno i'd need other peoples opinions on that.Whiiich i'll now just check comments n see lmao.
Also yeah getting into this series is a terminal condition. i started L Corp about 3 years ago and i still wont shut up about all of project moon's games lmao.

Yes, Library of ruina is really unique, there's nothing quite like it. Same devs recently released gacha-game named Limbus Company, which inherited many ideas from LoR, but for now there's little to no content.

If you’re liking the mili stuff from library of ruina might I recommend “Salt, pepper, birds, and the thought police”. That’s my favorite song in the game and has the biggest dissonance between lyrics and tone of music. That might call for some lyrical analysis.

I am once again asking you to keep Honkai Impact's cinematics in mind if you find your react queue is empty. Honkai impact has some of the best compositions cinematics-wise and song-wise. I guarantee you won't regret having reacted to them. What's more, there are a very large portion of honkai players and fans that love watching others react to these cinematics.
I'll leave one such cinematic below, there are many of these cinematics and they only grow in quality.
