This is another Floor Realization theme like Angela's, except this plays for the upper floor battles in the Library, and the one you have to fight this time is the game's _other_ main protagonist, Roland. Just like Angela, Roland rapidly shape-shifts between different bosses faced on the floor as he goes on a trauma-fueled rampage. I mentioned in one of your earlier reaction videos that the titular Library is a supernatural area that can shapeshift in response to powerful emotions, and all the art you're seeing here is all the stages the Library transforms into in response to Roland's unbridled emotions.
And he has a lot of emotions to work out, which is reflected in how diverse this theme is in terms of tone. I have heard traces of loneliness, sadness, despair, melancholy, wistfulness, malevolence, spite, rage, hope, and some combination of these throughout the theme. Without getting _too_ spoilery... Roland's got issues. In-game, the sound of the piano is the symbol of Roland's biggest traumas, and so it's very fitting that the piano goes out-of-the-frying-pan-and-into-new-exciting-lands-of-monkey-screwing crazy while he's reliving his worst memories in the fight. The one-woman wail is also symbolizes something significant to Roland, but that goes into endgame spoilers.
Unfortunately, the vocals were taken out of Phase 1 of this theme in the final version of the game. I understand the reason (the theme now goes from no vocals to some vocals to prominent vocals), but I liked how the beginning vocals made this track seem like a hurricane, easing up on the wailing in the middle like the storm's eye only to return with a vengeance in the finale. But even without them, this is by far my favorite theme in the game. There are so many things I learn to appreciate whenever I listen to Roland's theme again, like how the quiet beginning sounds like insects chirping in the dead of night, the ever-present piano, how the rhythm changes, how much of a dark contrast this is to Angela's theme, and how they managed to make a heavy EDM-like beat work in such a sinister theme like this. The music is a raging, chaotic blossom: Messy and turbulent, but so satisfying and beautiful to listen to. And yes, this theme's awesomeness is enhanced when you hear it in-game, especially when the fights are as tense and difficult as they are. On a related note, I've listened to this theme every day at least once for the past year, so a few hundred of those million views are literally mine.
P.S. That really is the Yellow Brick Road you're seeing in Phase 3. A few of the bosses Roland transforms into are based on the characters from The Wizard of Oz.

To add on to that last point, I love how Library of Ruina uses a lot of characters from folklore and fairy tales and somehow makes them thematically appropriate for each of the Floor Realizations, awesome stuff.

One thing to note is, many consider the Piano to represent Roland in both this and Angela's themes, while the Violin is Angela herself. So when you hear the Violin and the Piano coordinate in the first part, bounce off each other in phase 2, and go MAD in phase 3?
      Yeah.

The floor realizations are boss fights unlike floor themes. The song is even more incredible in context. It's SUPER thematic to the character it's connected to and plays during one of the most emotionally devastating parts of the story. I won't go super into story details but the piano and violin are major motifs in the game and are use beautifully here. A comment in one of the videos for this song pointed out that as the song progresses it sounds like the piano and violin are actively trying to beat the other out.

It indeed is, the Floor of Social Science's abnormalities and realization are based on an alternate timeline of The Wizard of Oz where Toto doesnt exist and the characters are all being manipulated and screwed over by the Wizard. Particularly, the book series is more of an influence for the floor.

I saw you pointed out the City of Oz! Without spoiling anything, a good number of abnormalities in this series are actually based on fairytale characters such as the tin man or red riding hood!
Edit: I’m really unsure about how copyright will play out; but honestly I wish someone would review Children of the City or Iron Lotus like others have mentioned. Hell, the intro song String Theocracy is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever listened to. If you can I’d definitely recommend them at some point! They really knocked it out of the park with the Realization themes!! You only get to hear them occasionally in important moments compared to the other songs in the game, so you can bet they wanted to really bring their all musically for these physical therapy sessions. During Early Access, they actually released the boss rush fights with a demo track which were already pretty damn good, but then updated them later with their final versions which gained so much slappage. I suppose compared to the regular battle themes where the phases change depending on how you are doing in any old fight, the realization phases are set linearly - usually in a set of 5 stages, phase 1 plays during the first 2 stages, phase 2 plays during the third and fourth, and phase 3 plays during the final stage, which probably explains why their progression is a lot smoother.
Roland is somewhat inspired by the main character of the Italian epic, Orlando Furioso (Orlando translated being Roland), which is where I think they decided to add in some operatic wailing, as well as a another somewhat opera related song for Roland in the OST. It's pretty neat, but as a warning learning too many details about the poem can spoil some things about Library of Ruina's Roland lol

  • @TheLastCurryRice
    @TheLastCurryRice 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

To your question about how the combination of the gameplay and the song feel, it's even better than you think. The core concept of this series is a technology that can make physical manifestations of human emotions. These fights are a sort of therapy. The pent up emotions resonate with the library and these two characters turn "vengeance" "loss of family" "despair" etc. into physical forms. Our solution? We beat the shit out of their manifested emotions and help them overcome their pasts.

The art for the thumbnails are the backgrounds for the respective levels with varying themes. Roland is the boss of the Floor Realisations for Briah, and he takes different forms based on the floor you're in.
    SPOILERS AHEAD
Phase 1 is Tiphereth: The Expectation for the Meaning of Existence, themed around (fallen) Magical Girls: The Queen of Hatred (Love), The Knight of Despair (Justice), The King of Greed (Happiness), the Servant of Wrath (Justice), and the Jester of Nihil(ism). The fight is won by freeing the magical girls from their prisons, symbolic of clinging to hope and fighting back against the vice and nihilism of the City that Roland has embraced.
Phase 2 is Gebura: the Courage to Protect, themed around excessive violence: The Red Riding Hood Mercenary (revenge), the Big and Will Be Bad Wolf (giving into bloodlust), Mountain of Smiling Bodies (endless hunger), Nosferatu (unending bloodlust), and Nothing There. Victory is gained by strategic aggression, countering the rampage of mindless violence that Roland undertook following the death of wife, which is the reason why 4 out of the 10 Ensemble members Distorted into abominations.
Phase 3 is Chesed: Those who are Faithful and Trustworthy: themed around a dark version of the Marvelous Land of Oz: The Scarecrow Searching for Wisdom, the Warm-Hearted Woodsman, the Road Home & Scaredy Cat, Ozma, and the Adult who Tells Lies. As the floor of Social Sciences, the key to winning this Realisation is keeping allies alive and team synergy. It's an allegory of how he lost his home and family due to being denied immigration thanks to him antagonising another Fixer, who later joins the Ensemble.

The music standalone is great, and because sessions of the game last so long you hear the music loop alot. You really get attached to these songs while your handling how to defeat enemies in a puzzly card fight way. You're jamming out while thinking of a solution to your round per round problems. It helps that story wise, these songs really bring out the emotions they are going through while this fight is happening. Also because the game started out early access, the first time I heard Angela's boss theme when they updated it, I could NOT get enough of it and just had to look for a youtube rip asap after finishing the fight, and the same goes for Roland's as well.

I'd advise playing the game itself, because while the mechanics and gameplay are good, holding your attention with good difficulty spikes here and there... Nothing beats the storytelling element of the game itself. Between each battle you see these character's interacting with eachother, making it something akin to a visual novel. You watch the character develop, forge bonds, speak of their past, and reflect on it. Even if the voice acting is only in Korean, you can feel the emotions in their words, the tone of their voices.
Then we all sit down, listen to Mili, and use .jpeg composer's floor to steamroll an emotional trainwreck in one glorious sweeping motion.

The reason I believe alot of people don't put too much gameplay or what not is because this game shines in your "first experience" and thankfully most people realise that and don't spoil things.
Unfortunately that means that all the fans can do is try and convince others to play it but when they search it up they don't see too much online. It's truly a fascinating, probably my favorite turn based game despite hating this genre.
The story presentation method are phenomenal and you can sit hours for a single fight in the end game (which is why the music needs to be good and you don't get bored of it, also why it cuts oddly because it's meant to loop)
The pictures you see so far in all your Library of Ruina videos are background of the fights it's really cool.
See it this way, you're the head of a dungeon (library) and you lure people in to this gladiator based fight (there's a deeper reason explained later on but it's spoiler territory). Hence you get to decide which "boss" (library floor) fights them. Therefore, the background and theme that plays will be related to the selected floor. Library of Ruina isn't a normal library but a magical one (origins explained later in the story) and thus heightened emotions can change the flow of battle. However some enemies may have extremely heightened emotions where they can forcefully change the appearance (and music) of the floor to suit them. It's also a really cool nod when you're like OMG WHATS HAPPENING WHY DID THE MUSIC CHANGE and yeah. The music also relates to the enemy and their thoughts, anxiety, fears, traumas etc. And vocal tracks? Gosh.... Insane.
Anyways really happy you're liking library of Ruina! Just know there's alot more than you searched but it's spoilery so not many people spoil others! In fact in a certain fight, there's this track- and then an amazing vocal tracks immediately after. I would have added it with this Roland track but suddenly remembered how huge of an impact it was for me during my first experience. It's definitely something we shouldn't spoil others so props on the TH-camr for not spoiling it.
Truly an underrated and gorgeous game. Only thing is the learning curve is vertical as some have said- and you gotta be able to read to play the game (inside joke that many people ignore the passive skill of bosses and end up getting wrecked 🤣)
I don't normally like to comment but it's Library of Ruina and you seem to enjoy it! 😊 Hope you have a great day regardless if this comment is read or not, enjoy your stay with project moon games! 🥰

Please in this song focus on the wailing: its the beloved of the character who owns this theme and tells the whole story in a sort of Tale.
First part the cries are mostly in sadness from the separation
Second part is flat out a cry in shock while the theme just pumps up the beat which makes you feel the character fall in a terrible curse (most of his fights involve Fairy Tale monsters)
The third and final part is just a cry of desperation for help while the song hammers the feeling of "this is the last chance go all or nothing"
And the best part? The vocal was added in one of the final updates of the game back in Early Access because Proyect Moon said "we can make the theme EVEN better".

Posted 2 months ago, so I am too late to the comment section, but I will comment anyway. All of Library tracks are absolute bangers, the best soundtrack for a game in my humble opinion, and thats even if you never played the game, BUT if you actually play the game it FITS so much. Every Floor theme corresponds to a Patron of the floor, a separate character representing this floor, each with traumatic past and specific traits/mannerisms/character in general which makes them unique, AND they actually become more unique the further up you go (First 5 floors have a very easily destinguishable leitmotif, while the ones after that have their own thing going, which also fits the story). Same goes for Realization themes, both for Angela, the Head Librarian, and for Roland, unfortunate-dumbass-turned-right-hand-man of Angela. If you enjoy the music and if you also enjoy a good, tragic yet compelling storytelling, I can't recommend playing Library enough. I have never encountered another recent original piece of media that captivated me as much with its twists, turns and real tearing up moments.

The music as standalone is great enough already. In context you have an extra layer of attachment for what you're doing in game.
The violin and Piano makes sense, as they represent the 2 deuteragonists themes clashing.
This song plays 5 times in-game, in the last one there is an extra stage with Mili's song "Gone Angels".
-SPOILERS- Just as a taste of what kind of scenarios does it play in, since you recognize Oz map. The third time it plays you're fighting against your friend who is resonating with the Wizard of Oz creatures emotions, and you need to both keep him at bay while also helping these creatures recover their "good ending" (help the Scarecrow see it has a brain to think, help the cat/lion use the courage to defend its friends, stuff like that)

I wouldn't say that context is needed to understand the song, but plot for Library of Ruina is good, and the moment you feel emotional from the context, the song does a good job highlighting that moment. Probably when you'll review other boss themes(most of them are vocal, from performer Mili), then lyrics gonna be connected to context pretty tightly.

yes that is Oz, the tldr of it is in lobotomy corporation they were researching taking energy from monsters (think SCP foundation if you know what that is) that they created from the human subconcious and a lot of them re-appear in library of ruina as fights that you have to complete to make the floors more powerful with the 2 main characters gaining their power during their mental breakdown boss fights
some of them are based on fairy tales, the 5 abnormalities of the social sciences floor being based on an alternate telling of the wizard of Oz where the wizard granted the wishes of dorothy and her friends in a genie like fashion turning them all into horrible monsters ie "the scarecrow searching for wisdom" sucks people's brains out

All the backgrounds shown are battle scenes in the game. As a lot of people mentioned they are, a lot of the scenes are based off of Fairy Tales and books. Most notable, Wizard of Oz, Dracula, and Little Red Riding Hood. With other story characters coming in. Like the Big Bad Wolf from Three Little Pigs.
As for the story of the character, Roland, the character the song belongs to, is emotionally unstable during these fights hence the large amounts of instrument variety. But the main instrument, the piano is a reference to a character in the game "The Pianist" who killed his wife and unborn daughter.

The stuff the Project Moon studio has made are absolute gems and for many of us who came into their works through Lobotomy Corporation, they are definitely underrated and it's exciting seeing both games start to garner more traction. Lobotomy Corporation had a rather 'cult' following as the game's a management simulator of sorts with absolutely cruel levels of difficulty that pushed away many players unable to struggle through it. Library of Ruina is much more reasonable with it's difficulty and story telling, along with all of the higher qualities they were able to apply to the new title, it's just a shame that it became more difficult to financially support them through means outside of purchasing their games other products but that also means that some people actively bought and gifted the titles to try and lure other people into the franchise. The story they tell and experience they offer are truly remarkable, and the music absolutely hits harder in-game where you experience their tracks, particularly the songs produced with Mili!

Libarry of ruina is an underdog game for sure. Its also quite difficult so... that might put people off. Like I've been at it for almost 100 hours and I haven't beaten it, but thats due to difficulty.
Roland and Angela themes are their themes for their Floor Realizations. There are 3 tiers of floors. Angelia is tier 1, Roland is tier 2, and their finallies are tier 3. Realizations are these characters confronting their super dark pasts and their negative feelings about those manifesting themselves into boss rush gauntlets based on the bosses of that floor. With one bonus boss being the core emotion they were feeling at the end. Angelia's stuff is all based on her, Roland is more based on his own despair, but also the despair of the abnormalities themselves.
Oh, for music, look up Abnormalities for this game. Thats another good one. Part 2 plays for you whenever you 'synchronize' with some of them in some floors and its pretty fun.
--------------------------------------- Spoilers for Floor Realizations , sort of. (What they are, at least and the story at play for that realization specifically. ------------------------------------------------------
Before I start, some of these things come from outside material, or material you have to really look up, so yeah.
For the wizard of oz stuff, there are 'boss battles' with all the anomalies of a floor in a row. And yeah, one floor has a bunch of anomalies based on the Wizard of Oz, but a more corrupt tale where the green wizard was the bad guy(The adult who tells lies), not the wicked witch. And their boss rush is going through the story of Oz, but the corrupted version. The finalie is using Scardy Cat (The lion who wanted courage, but was given rage instead.), Scarecrow (who was given a brain with no wisdom, and had to learn it himself or take it from others.) Tin Man (who was given a heart, but it was an unfeeling, unbeating iron heart that pains him.), Road Home (The girl who wants to go home. She gets her wish, but its a road where she could never return home, as her home had been destroyed by the storm.), and Ozma, from the sequal book (Who was cursed by the Wizard's ally, the Witch of the North for wanting friends. She gave her friends, but they were sickly pumpkins.) to fight the wizard and defeat him, finding they could have what they wanted all along if they stuck together, even if it wasn't perfect and a bit twisted.
There is also another floor with this music, but instead your dealing with a corrupt set of Magical Girls. (Think sailor moon). And when you beat them, you have to fight the essence of their corruption. The Queen of Hatred (Who ran out of evil to fight, so had to make herself her own evil.), The King of Greed (A girl who wanted more and more happiness for all, but eventually coveted it for herself and became corrupted.), The Knight of Despair (A magicail girl who fell into deep despair after realizing fighting evil is a never ending, fruitless endevour.) and the Servant of Wrath (A girl who went berserk as she fought countless evil, striking friends and foe alike.) Eventually you reach the final magical girl, who corrupted(?) them all, the Jester of Nihil and they all fight her to be free and back to their original selves.
(Also this floor has an Exodia strategy where you play this story out with your 'level up' bonuses, eventually ending with a single character for that level who can solo basically everything, but its difficult to do.)
Third floor where this happens is the floor about evil and vengeance. Or at least, the messed up stories of its more messed up anomalies. First is Little Red Riding Hood Mercenary and the Big and will be bad Wolf. Little Red wants unending vengeance on this wolf for eating her grandma, and she will do what she can to get it with her sword and shotgun. She doesn't care about friendly fire, and gets mad if she doesn't get the killing blow. The Wolf does what it does in the story at first, but soon becomes the more celtic version of the story of a powerful wolf stalking its prey under the moonlight. These aren't that bad, but now it starts to get way more messed up. Next is the Mountain of Smiling Bodies, a mass grave formed from the evil deeds of lobotomy corp that was never cleaned up and gained sentience, and it hungers for more bodies. Next is Dracula, because why not. (Not much to him.) And the final one is fairly releveant to that floor named Nothing There, who was I think Lobotomy Corp's first attempt at making monsters.
And the final floor where this theme plays is the story of how three birds, corrupted by a prophecy spoken by someone from the city, eventually terrorized the forest they called home, and eventually destroyed it. In fact this is the only battle where the story of the abnormalities being used is told in front of you. Big Bird and its thousand eyes could observe the forest, luring those it found to be eaten by itself so that they wouldn't fall prey to the 'monster' they heard of. Little Bird hated evil, and punished any wrongdoing as it thought evil people wouldn't be evil if punished. If that person fought back, little bird devoured them whole. Finally Judgement Bird judged those who entered the forest and disposed of what it deemed unjust, however his scales were always weighted on the side of sin. Eventually the fear of the 'beast' caused these three birds to combine and become Apolcaypse Bird, the beast they had feared, which destroyed the forest and devoured everything in sight. At some point heroes managed to vanquish this monstrosity by destroying the essence of its power, the eggs of the three birds. They blinded Big Bird, destroyed the scales of Judgement Bird, and little bird couldn't open its beak ever again.
Yeah, lots of little stories on each floor, some told to you, some shown. And these are just the floors with Roland playing mind you. Although to be fair, Angela's floors are a lot simpler due to them being themed around the floor, not the abnormalities.

  • @TheBluePylon
    @TheBluePylon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I do believe that both the song as a listening experience standalone and in context with the game have its merits.
In game where this occurs, as you might know by now with the comments, is a multi-boss gauntlet with no checkpoints. It does mean that for most players who go through it the first time will hear the Phase 1 theme often due to losing and having to try again. Likewise with Phase 2 if they end up stuck there trying to figure out a solution to the fight.
However beating the phase you're stuck on and moving to the next section it brings such a shocking "wow factor" with it that makes the song with context worth it. Arriving at the last phase of the gauntlet and hearing the sudden rush of piano from the third phase of this song brings about so many mixed emotions. You've fought 4 phases up to this point and think it couldn't get any worse but it just keeps coming and coming.
The standalone listening experience does let you pick out those subtle instruments that they slide in there to help match the personality of Angela and Roland that you might've missed while focused on the fight at hand. There's a much greater appreciation from it if you have the context of the story as well.

Context and background of the song (the people at project moon are amazing with crafting interlocking components that mesh with the story even if they don't need to.
The instruments in the song reflect the character’s (Roland’s) motivations. The piano represents the thing that killed his wife “the pianist” a monster that used to be human who used a piano. The violin represents his motivation for being in the library. Revenge on Angela (violin is due to that being the lead instrument of her version of the song) as her actions in the previous game indirectly caused the creation of the pianist. Her revenge on the protagonist of the previous game and disrupting his plans to try and save the city due to the role he gave her.
