Raddy RF760. The Most Compact AM/FM/CB/HAM/AIR/SW Radio I've ever seen, and it even has SSB Mode!

  • I honestly don't know how they pulled this radio off. I imagine a lot of work went into stuffing all these modes and features into a literal pocket radio. Years ago a radio this size would be AM only, and if you were lucky you might get FM as well.
    But this game changer gets the entire radio broadcast spectrum as well as all the modes needed to hear it, and it even comes with a long wire antenna to help with reception.

    It’s pleasing that you can get all this in one elegant package. You can use it to listen to the football in the garden, the pirate stations in London, the numbers stations from the intelligence services. If also has DAB and satellite reception, it could be a world beater.

      @radellaf ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a surprise how that has become sort of a standard flat battery, lately. I just wish there was a trustworthy name brand version. I don't think Nokia makes them any more, though I have seen "new" old stock ones. XHDATA brand is good enough for me but even then gotta watch out for them swelling. Lotta people don't like them but I kinda do. I might prefer a single 14500 but, hey, some advantage to flatness.

  • @wtmayhew
    @wtmayhew ปีที่แล้ว +21

    The takeaway is not to expect miracles, but Raddy looks nifty. A tiny radio with digital tuned direct sampling and no preselector electronics for HF isn’t going to handle overload situations very well. The problem is you could have a very strong signal in an adjacent band to where you’re listening that kills sensitivity. Also strong FM stations can be an issue, which using a a low pass filter on the HF antenna input will help solve.
    I think I’d also consider the Eton Elite Executive. Yes, it is larger and runs on four AA cells. The price is about $155 as of August 2022, but it is still in the ballpark price range of the Raddy and it has a much larger display and direct entry keypad. Using AA batteries is helpful because you can keep some lithium cells on hand to pop in for emergencies where recharging is not an option. The SSB clarifier on the Eton lets you hone in for natural sounding speech output, but you get squelch chuffing when making 1 KHz steps in SSB. I’ve got a 40 year old Radio Shack/Sangean which chuffs - you’d think designers would have found a fix for inexpensive radios by now. No respectable amateur or commercial radio chuffs.

    • @harveypost1841

      @@harveypost1841 The radio I have in a Radio Shack DX-440 made by Sangean which originally belonged to my parents who bought it about 40 years ago. It is only a BFO, so no LSB/USB, no AM aviation band. The service manual can be downloaded, so I am set if I ever want to give it a tune-up on the bench. It is a nice radio for casual listening thanks to the fairly large speaker.

    • @radellaf
      @radellaf ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OTOH, I've picked up the Eton and the nearly identical Xhdata D808, for under $100... I'll live with chuffing at that price. The PL660/680 don't chuff... but much heavier. None do VHF (apart from air), either. I wish more portable SW radios would throw in 144 and 440 ham bands.

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @FarpointFarms There are numerous small municipalities in Allegheny County including the City of Pittsburgh. I believe that the cost to upgrade the literary 1000s of radios and the hundreds of radio support systems (repeaters etc) would be too high and the loss of interoperability among them would be lost if even one major municipality switched to 100% digital would be something not worthwhile. Even NYC uses a lot of analog frequencies (trunked and conventional
      .)for the same cost reasons. It's stuck In the 70s, but nice for scanner fans as a sub $50 Beofeng UV-5R is a useful "scanner" here.

    Selectable sidebands? BFO? Smallest step increment 5kc or 1kc? Selectivity? Sensitivity seems good however a strong nearby station could wipe out a weak signal. Hundred dollar bills don't exactly grow on trees ya know.

      MrRadio,
      Ham since 1962 & Ch19 CB mobile while travelling, I bought the Tecsun PL-330 to see if I'm now in a radio dead zone or if I should bother putting up an antenna in my transplanted QTH.
      I have found the Tecsun works very well on the HF ham bands even with a simple indoor long wire and I will some day put up my G5RV & fire up my keys, keyer and tube shack.
      The PL-330 receives FM (stereo with headphones) better than any radio in my house and has a long life battery, chargeable with my phone charger.
      Since my only ham hobby is CW, I wonder if this unit has selectable VFO settings or ANY VFO at all?
      I'd like to see an evaluation of this unit by some other hams.

    If you plug in an external LW/MW antenna (Like the one from a Tecsun PL-368), you may discover another band - longwave. Kind of useless in the United States, unless you're into listening to NDBs (Non-Directional Beacons for aircraft), but an interesting Easter egg nontheless.

    Should have an internal ferrite antenna for the medium wave.

    • @radellaf
      @radellaf ปีที่แล้ว

      It does according to the manual, and how it is behaving for me. The long wire hooked to the antenna jack, also, may not be _wired_ to the MW circuit, but enough crosstalk happens that it does help some. Ferrite coupler is better, homebrew or the C. Crane.

    The Tecsun PL-360 (good) PL-365 (better) PL-368 (best) I've bought each of them for under Cdn$100 each, shipped. They're far superior to this one, and not that much bigger. VHF-Air band not included. On my next trip overseas, I'll be bringing the PL-368 as it does everything I need.

      If it wasn't for the bad receive performance, and a few issues the radio in the video would be far better that any of those receivers for the simple fact it is a handheld, supports AM/FM/SSB, and covers Medium Wave 520KHz all the way up to UHF 520MHz

      Well, as an owner of the Tecsun radios you mentioned (plus others) I have to disagree with you regarding the size of of this compared with the Tecsuns. It is substantially smaller. I have no doubt that it won't have the performance of the Tecsuns, but what else can you expect at this size?
      If I can get one in the UK then it will definitely join the radio family.

    It's unlikely the radio uses the whip antenna to receive AM broadcast. There's likely a many turns loop antenna inside. The wavelength at 1000 kHz is just too long to use that little whip. Very effective on VHF/UHF, though. Pretty full-featured for the price.
