I started making patterns when I was five. I had learned to sew a bit by hand, but mostly wrapped and tied doll clothes. When Mama gave me scraps from my Easter coat, I cut out a dress for my Terri Lee and asked her to sew it together. It was so perfect she was awed. She informed me that I didn't need a seam down the front but SHOULD put extra fabric in the back so it would lap over and I could add snaps to close it.
"Remember when you couldn't sew, and then you practiced, and now you can 😃" It's so true! Love that reminder. When I got my brand new sewing machine I was so terrified of breaking something, haha -- now I've made a dress and have improved quite nicely on my hand sewing, pattern tracing, and more. Next: pattern making!! 💪🏼
As a recent retiree, one of my goals was to learn how to draft my own patterns. Your vlog has really encouraged me just to get started. I have some books and with the wonderful internet, I know I can do this!
I actually do sheet metal by trade, but my wife is great at sewing. It’s slightly different but there is a lot of overlap, going from flat patterns to 3d, so I’m trying to learn how to do some drafting to help her in patterning and design. She’s much better than she gives herself credit for, afraid to jump into more complicated things, even though she’s an expert in paper piece quilting lol. Thank you for the video, my wife and I both will be able to develop our skills further
I am So So glad to have found you…have had a longtime desire to sew with custom patterns! Life got in the way, and even after gathering machine and supplies…they all got stolen a few years ago. Now I have more incentive to get started, and so I will stick with you for learning~ funds are soon enfolding, I can”t wait. 🎉
I'm so sorry to hear your equipment was stolen but i'm glad you're here and have found this useful! Yay to getting started and I really appreciate your kind words!
I have discalculia too, but sewing has been immensely helpful with getting more comfortable/confident with numbers. Thank you for this encouraging video-- I've done some pattern cutting, but would LOVE to do more-- esp. now!🧵💐🌷
Hi. Thank you for a great video. I had a career teaching, and I focused a lot on ergonomics. Regarding your fingers and pencils, I noticed a bending of your index finger. Try to keep it as relaxed as possible lying straight along the pencil. It relieves so much stress and tension in finger, hand, forearm, shoulder and head.
As a man I'm a little jealous that I didn't have my mother or grandmother teach me at a young age. But I started in my late 20s and got to learn from professors that are amazing costume designers in my city.
Thank you for all the lovely tips! I’m fairly new to pattern drafting but I did recently attempt a jacket from a bodice block I made (I still have to put the lining in) and I’m so pleased with the fit so far! It truly makes a difference when using something that you know fits you as a base. I’m really excited to make a 50s style linen halter dress next ❤❤
Thank you. There is a pattern that I have been putting off making just because it starts with a sloper and goes through slashing and spreading, and adding pleats. I need a little bravery to overcome the overwhelm.
I've been trying to learn sewing for a while now, as I can't find affordable clothes that fit me. Even sewing patterns aren't usually the right fit- would you recommend learning pattern drafting early on, or should I start with purchasing patterns? (After I learn the machine and basic sewing, of course)
How wonderful to be starting out on your sewing adventures! And such a good question ~ I hope I can answer it helpfully! I think sewing patterns and pattern drafting are 2 different skills to learn really. Being successful with either is greatly helped by understanding garments in the first place. I think it's easier to learn to pattern cut as you're then free to make anything you dream of and it will fit you. Sewing patterns are great fun but you're still restricted by what's available, having to compromise on design and often have to do a lot of fitting. I think spend time analysing some garments you really like, and do as much research on garment construction as you can. Try out techniques ~ seams, zips etc so you learn to sew in a way you enjoy, try some simple sewing patterns and try some very simple pattern cutting projects then see what you feel! Good luck and let me know how it goes!
@@TaraDeighton Thank you for the detailed reply! Most of the clothes I dream of wearing are incredibly hard to find patterns for. I'll spend some time to learn basic sewing techniques and then have a shot at pattern cutting! My previous failures have all come from being impatient and trying to sew things with only knowledge of the machine and not garment construction. This time I'll take it slow so I can end up enjoying learning to sew!
i wanna make mascot costumes. i have the head nailed down and the shoes and hands but the clothes are always a struggle as i dont know how they works. so what your saying is if i make my own custom blocks for the suit i can tweak it to the design i want?

Thank you! I have arthritis in my finger now so I shall take your advice moving forward if I can!

I'm sure you can do it! I tend to practise complex patterns in quarter scale first which makes it much less daunting!

Hi! What kind of paper did you used 02:00 .

I use spot and cross from a company called Morplan.

Creating your own bespoke blocks means you can tweak them into almost anything!
Thanks ❤
Hello 🥰
How do you store your pattern drafts? 🤔
Hi there! I store all my patterns in plastic wallets in folders in collections ~ so dresses in 1, blouses in another and so on!
Patternmaster = A Klingon Bat'leth 😂
Things don't fallout of your ears, they get buried in your subconscious.
