  • This video has been highly requested for so long! I hope this helps you out and clears some confusion you had about tracing your clothes and patternmaking :)
This is how I trace my clothes to create patterns. In no way am I teaching you professionally how to patternmake. If you want to get even more technical, I recommend purchasing a patternmaking book or taking a class.

An important thing is do not ignore darts when you are making a pattern. Measure how wide the dart is, double it, and add that width to the pattern. On another channel I saw someone make a pattern from a fitted skirt but they ignored the darts in the skirt and just traced around the edges, so the front and back of their home-made skirt was totally flat and had no shaping to fit a 3-D human body. If the fabric has no stretch, you need those darts to make a flat fabric conform to your body curves.

This is so helpful! Mark the grain, fold in half, trace along seams, may need to play around with clothes with oddities (the weird overlapping in shorts, elestic items, etc.), make sure to mark pieces and seam allowances. Bara-bing, bada-boom. My favorite t-shirt ever is starting to get holes and I've yet to find one that fits me as good, so I knew I needed to be able to make a pattern for it. I don't sew, but I wish to learn, and that simple t-shirt is the inspiration for it lol.

I've been making patterns for years. I actually studied pattern making in college 35 years ago. I have one of those folding cardboard "cutting boards." I place the garment on it and push down pins to hold it in place. I can then use the pins to mark the placement of the side seams, etc. I have a small place so I put the board on my bed. Thanks so much for your tips. I learn something new every time I watch your videos.

@@hippiechicksmomma8691 You can find it at sewing centers. I think walmart has them also. It is a large cutting board made of cardboard with grids laid out. It folds up for storage and unfolds to about 3x6 feet. They also have a similar product called a Superboard that has a laminated surface. It's more durable but costs more, about $20. Have fun. Sewing is exciting.

What side to trace patterns on with the fabric. I made pants and cut pockets but they weren't all facing the design side of the fabric and I couldn't tell from the pattern (Simplicity) if I was doing it right. I also mistakenly cut off too much fabric from my pattern pieces because I thought the pieces were supposed to line up, resulting in. Very tight fit at ths hip and waist. Then I realized that the size I wear off the rack doesn't necessarily match the various pattern sizes so I have to make sure each piece fits. My measurements are not proportional or standard so I'll be pattern grading a lot but don't really have a clue how to. I'll definitely be purchasing or checking out books on the topic, but maybe you can do a video of helpful hints you learned from cutouts and share some of your favorite book resources? I've never sewn before and am inclined to dive in and learn from my mistakes and experience as I go, but I'd love to know how to avoid any mishaps. Also, do you have to use muslin for your practice pieces or can you use another fabric?

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

It looked like she moved the zipper to the back center seam, which would use a simple inseam zipper instead of a lapped fly front. She also skipped the back yoke which is more troubling because that is what adds the shaping to fit over a butt. I think if you skip the yoke, you would need to add back darts to compensate.

You can turn regular jeans into pregnancy jeans by replacing the zipper area with an elastic band. There are tutorials for it on TH-cam. Dresses were also my friend because you can get a cute flowy/stretchy dress and it will look good for most if not all of your pregnancy. Also, some thrift stores (like value village) will often have a maternity section. The clothes are usually in awesome shape since they weren't worn that much and a fraction of the price! I hope this helps and congratulations! My little man is 7 months old and it is an amazing adventure. 😊

I have one suggestion: All of the pre-made patterns that I have ever used use 2 notches/marks to indicate the back and 1 notch/mark indicate the front. I use a lot of pre-made patterns and I think that keeping this standard for self-made patterns would deter possible mix-ups down the road, especially if someone is already a pre-made pattern user and is venturing into the self-made pattern world. Just a thought.

hi Coolirpa! great video, thanks. If you have time for another video, I would really appreciate to see how can we trace a pattern from a shirt, dress, top, that has darts. I try it two time from very simple clothes that I have, but without a good result. Thanks in advance!!

April- I just found your page and I’m LOVING ur helpful, amazing content!!
I know it’s been a while since you made this video, but I would REALLY be interested in what comes NEXT…
Once you make your mock up from your home made pieces but now it doesn’t quite fit right… please can you show us how to make the right adjustments so it will fit perfectly!!
    That would be SOO helpful!!
Thank you so much! ❤ keep up the great content! 😍😃

Jennifer Xiong don’t say that, I always thought it would be too hard and watched all her videos just for fun, but in April last year I got a sewing machine and without any experience I started learning it and so far already made a skirt, some pants and lots of little stuff. It’s really not that hard, you should try!

I’ve always wanted to learn how to make patterns from scratch to make that perfect clothing item that you just can’t find in a store. Creating a sleeve pattern is particularly daunting for me. Specifically getting the sleeve to fit the shape of the bodice. I would love to see videos on how to make patterns from scratch, and done so in a slow and clear way so I can wrap my mind around it 😅

Pattern-making for fashion design by Helen Joseph Armstrong is a good book if you are looking for one. It's a bit pricey but it's what we used in fashion school and it's relatively comprehensive. If you have a dress form I can recommended a draping book also... Draping for fashion design by Hilda Jaffe and Nurie Relis. 😊
