I’ve bought several books to make bespoke garments. None have made as much sense as your tutorials. I’ve made up the skirt block which fitted perfectly first time. Can’t wait to draft this bodice. You’re really building my confidence. Thank you so much.
Thankyou so much. This is the first time I have been able to really follow an explanation of drafting a bodice block. I am looking forward to the upcoming videos, In particular the fitting adjustments. I had a unilateral mastectomy a number of years ago (right side without reconstruction) and have been working on how to eliminate the side bust dart. I’ve had some success but it’s a continuous learning process and now I have the front darts to consider as well😅. Thanks once again.
I am 76 and just now getting around to drafting a fitted bodice. Didn't have help with measurements but I persevered. After a week's time, two drafts and 3 toiles later I'm there and very pleased. I'm now ready to make a wrap blouse with slightly flared peplum. Thank you for the very clear instruction and quality visuals.
This is really helpful! By far the most in depth and understandable pattern drafting guide that I've seen so far, I'll definitely be using this when I sit down to make my own!
Old, retired noob here. Can your excellent instructions in this drafting series be made applicable for a man's shirt. I what to take a shot at drafting and sewing my very own bespoke shirt. My daughter says - "It can't be done Dad - not at your age!" By gum, I'll prove her wrong! 😂
Hey! Maybe you know about this video but check out Cornelius Quiring's video "How to draft a shirt pattern and fix fit issues". His videos are really helpful. Hope this helps!
Made my bodice block today. I would say to anyone following, just trust the process and go with the flow. I didn't understand it per se, I just did it as Izzy said to. Some things looked strange (my back armsyce looks ridiculous compared to what I have seen on paper patterns) but when you sew it up and continue the series everything will fall into place. That is what happened to me when I made the skirt block. So have faith people 😉 Sewing this up as a toile next. x
I can't tell you how thrilled I was when I got the video's notification!!!! I tried tu draft my basic block from a french book, (English is my third language 😊) .... it was drafted from the exact body's measurements, and I was left with no clue how to add ease!!!!! Can't wait to see your next video. Thank you
This is excellent. I shall make this today. I just padded an inexpensive styrofoam dressmakers dummy to fit my size (it actually worked out well), so I am going to make this block and check how it fits onto the dummy. Being on my own, measurements and fitting are always a bit cumbersome, especially the back. I could not find any video giving hints how to measure yourself without help. The front and sides are easy, across the back is very difficult. I am going to follow your videos for sure. Thanks for the clarity of your instructions. You do not waffle which is great.
This was absolutely outstanding, have tried for years to get this right. Your ability to convey information is without a doubt the best. Thank you so much form this video will be following along for sure. Respectfully TNT
Fantastic video..I made my block today, it fits pretty good except a little too wide at the upper chest…my question is do you think If made a bigger bust dart it would make Centre front at neck to about 3 “ down a tad smaller??..the rest fits great❤❤❤❤
I love hearing your calm voice and detailed instructions. However if I may suggest to label the lines to make it easier for a noob like me to follow? I made some mistakes and find that I had to go through the whole video again to get back to the point/ line that I need to correct it. Thank you.
SUBSCRIBED! This is so clear and well paced. I didn't get lost at any point!! I need to have a friend measure me before I can start tackling this... Thank you!
My dear Izzy this is an amazing drafting series. I have just finished with the bodice draft and looking forward to sewing it. You are the best teacher I have ever met!!! I am blessed to have found minerva channel, you are excellent. I have a small request for a video to be included in the bodice series. Please, show us how to eliminate all the darts of the bodice and end up with a dartless bodice, so that we could use for shirts or blouses with no darts. Thank you so much in advance!!!
Good morning Izzy! I started to draft my block yesterday, following your tutorial, but my cat had other ideas, so I’ll continue today, and pray I got it right - (she was a real distraction the furry minx!) Thank you so much for the easy to follow instructions xx
Thank you so much for share your way of drafting the bodice pattern . Now is there a way please how’s to measure the height of your shoulder because I know that some people have one shoulder lower than the other
Thank you so much for showing us ❤. I have been waiting for someone to show me how to draw this bust dart and here you are. I very much appreciate your tutorial. I hope you will show us how to draft the jacket sleeves. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It is a few days and a lot of bodice draft making hours later: I now made the basic bodice from Izzy and another 3 bodices from other sources. Now the result: Bodice # 1 Minerva - excellent and easy, Bodice # 2 from a "professional": so complicated I threw in the towel after about 1 hour trying to follow, Bodice # 3: relatively ok but again - unnecessarily complicated and working from a spreadsheet with lots of calculations which took a bit of time because I first had to download the spreadsheet and do all the calculations which then were marked in letters and numbers. Bodice # 4: I drafted using a book by Natalie Bray: Dress Pattern Designing - again, fairly involved using a chart and my own meaurements. The best-fitting bodice was from Izzy which I then adjusted to her excellent video how to adjust for a rounded back. So, enough bodice drafting for me. I am using this simple but effective method and adjusting the toile on the body and my made-to-fit-me dress body. An interesting exercise and I learned a lot.
Thank you for this very clear and helpful tutorial. I just wanted to ask…… the measurements for the shoulder dart width and along the bottom etc, are they standard, or do they depend on your size?
I am impressed with your instructions please help me my bust and waist measurements is almost the same and my shoulders are smaller than average I cannot get the shape at the waistline, how would I be able to draft my size
Hi izzy i have just recently come across your videos and i must say i have found them inspiring and engaging so thank you. So the reason for me getting intouch is my first love is photography and when my mum passed away i took on her sewing machines and have tried to make some outfit for my own photoshoots. But the problem i have is that i work with different models with different body sizes, so was wondering which would be a good overhaul Bodice block size to start with, thanks again and look forward to hearing from Chris the photographer

But I got stuck for the back bodice,, my accross back went further than the shoulder line,, i saw other youtube videos and try to implement their tutorial, but i also got stuck in the same place.. how can i fix it? 🥺 Edit: i fixed it, there is something wrong with my across back measurement. And everything fine, thank you 💖

This is only the bodice and too small size. Can you show us how to use this bodice to be a classic long and short sleeve blouse. How to add size to be tight ,medium and loose fit? Can you put the measured number and calculated number on here? I need look and think it. Thanks
Great tutorial, but I'm kinda creeped out because my mesurements are almost exactly the same! I have 89, 74, 21, 12, 42, 18, 33, 36. And these are measurements I did a few weeks ago, before discovering this video! Made the video very easy to follow along to though lol
Great video but please can you explain why you're adding certain amounts to the measurements taken. I assume it's extra for ease and the amounts added are some sort of standard (but can these amounts be altered?).
They can be, you could add extra inches depending on the amount of skullduggery given & received; the size of a black hole is one of the factors which indicate the force of its own gravity after it collapses in on itself. There’s no determining proof of where matrixal worm holes go, so confidence would be a must if your thinking of travelling through one on one of your adventures.
On my back bodice, the across back(27cm) line extends beyond the shoulder line(23.5) from center back. When it's time to draw the armscye, it isn't round at all. Any ideas? The front is ok.
I recommend checking out The Closet Historian on TH-cam. ALL her patterns/ projects start with using her bodice block and she talks you through step by step how she manipulates it in all different ways!
Thank you so much for this very detailed instruction, it was so easy to follow even though it’s rocket science to me! Question I ran into though: my cross back (divided by 2 + .5 cm) measurement went out further than the end of my shoulder point, in turn messing up the arm hole measurement + line drawing. Is there anyway I can fix this or did I do something wrong? I checked all my measurements multiple times.
I got stuck because my shoulder length was 19 cm and the lines ended up crossing over eachother from front and back - do you think I measured that wrong? Please help! :)
Hi, darts can help with shaping and helping the fabric to fit correctly, however for a flat chest, bust darts may not be necessary. We would recommend basting the darts in place so you can try the bodice on with the darts, and then you can simply remove the darts if you feel you don't need them.
I really enjoyed watching this. I manage to draft the block fine but wondered where some of the numbers come from in some of the calculations, is there a chart i can follow please just so that i can understand it a bit better.
Thank you Jane. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the tutorials 😊 We don’t have a chart to follow to explain the maths any further for this series. However if you’re really enjoying the drafting techniques, you might find purchasing a few pattern drafting books interesting. There are so many different methods of pattern drafting so it’s worth trying out a few things f them to really start to understand the maths. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be looking at refining the bodice fit and then we look in detail at dart manipulation. This should also start to help us all understand the drafting process and the maths behind it all then. Thanks for following and please do share your progress with us all here at Minerva!

Hi Emma, the block does not include seam allowance. In the next video we will show you how to add seam allowances and sew up the block to check the fit.

Oh yikes...I followed to the T (it took me 3 x the length of the video because I,kept stopping so I could write out the directions in obscenely explicit detail) and STILL my front dart lines aren't the same length when I use the dart width I calculated. I hate math😢
The width of the front neckline is one cm larger than the back neckline, which is absolutely wrong and will lead to an overflow of fabric at the front neckline. It should be the same as the width of the back neckline or 0.5-1cm less
Hi there! We are sorry you find an issue with this specific video - Part 27 and 28 of this series goes into more details on refining the neckline, both front and back and will allow you to achieve a more perfect fit for your garment 😊 We hope this helps
