You should listen to the September 2016 interview Norm did with Leonard Lopate. It was the only audio interview I’ve ever found where Norm talks about his troubled adolescence including leading home at fourteen, living on the streets and supporting himself through crimes like selling drugs, breaking and entering, and fencing stolen merchandise. He had talked about this in a print interview but I have not heard it in another audio interview, and I swear I’ve heard ‘em all.

I know that there is a sincere and deep individual inside of Norm, but it seems difficult for him to sustain at the foreground of his personality. Not that I expect it to be his modus operandi, to be serious and profound. He's a comedian, one of the greats. Mr King, you will never simply "not exist". Your legacy is not likely to fade in my lifetime. Rest in peace.

The funny thing about Norm is how mysterious he was. So many other times he told the story about Johnny Carson inviting him to his home and in that version he claims he turned down the invite. So no one knows which version is true. He loved being hard to pin down. I think the fact that he told nearly no one about his cancer was him adding the final joke to his mystique and he is probably laughing now thinking about how he was able to disappear like a magician. RIP Norm!
