Yep, we do it at our own peril. A police officer told me he would not be concerned if a biker was doing 5 - 10 km/hr faster than the traffic while filtering but doing stupid speeds will always get his attention. And of course they don't need to chase and stop. Noting the rego number is all they need to do. It comes down to personal responsibility I reckon. And riding to survive as you stated so well mate.
I know this is a while since you put this up Scotty, But I only came across your channel today, I am a fellow rider myself and have been riding since the seventy, I have lost a lot of mates over the years in accidents and four of my mate lost their live rom being pined between two vehicles on the motorways, I am a bit like you in the away with lane splitting and do it for my safety, Not to get there any quicker than the next guy. I have been enjoying your Video's and like to say Thank You, Stay safe and enjoy the ride...
When oh when will they finish that section on the southern?!! Two years of chaos and nose to tail. I've learned to watch for other riders coming up behind me because I was nearly taken out by two riders coming through doing 120+ in traffic doing 30 - 40, they passed me in my lane to both my left and right. Some genuine moto madness right there. But I do often note motorists moving aside for riders, and they get the friendly wave and a hearty "Cheers buddy". It's not the taxi and courier drivers that scare me most, it's riders in t shirts and shorts and jandals - or even barefoot, seen recently at Pt Chev on a scooter.... Did you pass me a few weeks ago at Lincoln Rd on ramp, a Saturday morning I think, me on The Beast - black Kymco scooter and skull face mask :)
I lived in Mata-Mata for three years and loved it, I do miss it. Lane splitting is now legal here in South Australia and I do it at intersections often as I don't want anyone hitting me behind. Nice topic Mate.
it does say in the road code the its legal to pass on on the left as long as the other vehicle isnt turning left, and lane splitting is legel in new Zealand, think about it, if you are in the Centre lane and u pass them them in the left hand lane u are technically passing on the left
Hi, I rode bikes for over 15 years on the road, but never lane splitted because I didn't trust drivers enough to look out for bikes coming through. I have been rear ended intentionally on my bike, have had objects hurled at me (including a cigar that got caught in my viser & burnt my face!) I got the feeling that most car drivers thought that I was a male & would storm up to me (usually at servos) only to realise I was female whilst removing my helmet & would suddenly walk away in the other direction lol! My point is, that most people who complain about bikers lane splitting are car drivers & there are not many questions asked in the road tests! I have experienced this both in Australia & NZ & have both car & bike licenses in both countries....
I can definitely understand why riders would hesitate to overtake or undertake, & also why some choose to lanesplit... My experience when driving a car is that once traffic bunches up, other vehicles tend to rapidly block a 'cage rider's' backward line of vision. Drivers can therefore rapidly lose the ability to see a rider (of motorbike, scooter or even bicycle) who's moving up between rows of traffic, until they're right beside your own car. Especially so if you're in righthand lane, vehicles aren't uniformly keeping left, &/or rider is moving over 20k and wearing non-reflective materials. This limitation on rear-facing visibility can cause major hazards if a lanesplitter arrives while we're manoevring to change lanes, or trying to dodge other crazy drivers around us? Your own situational awareness when riding between lanes is clearly acute, but alas I've also seen a lot of riders on various vehicles who move much faster between lanes & don't pay sufficient attention. Those factors make it hard for me to 100% endorse the safety aspect of lanesplitting... Are there any places in NZ where dedicated mini-lanes for motorbikes & scooters are being installed, to help insulate them from traffic risks as per what's been done in places for bicycles...?
I have a problem with bikers going 80+ while traffic is at a standstill or barely going 20+ this is the most dangerous situation as it just takes that one car to make a quick lane change in front of the biker and hes in serious trouble.
For the same reason as a cyclist I don't go full speed past stopped or slowed traffic. I limit my Delta-V to about 10Kph over the stopped or slowed traffic speed. Being relegated to the gutter on a cycle is just as dangerous though, so when there are two lanes in the city, I ride to the left of the right lane, and invariably, end up lane splitting with the motorcycles.
Simply, people that whinge about it typically come from countries where it’s illegal. In NZ it’s legal, and I will happily follow the law. Cars are the most dangerous things for bike riders - I try and keep them away from me, reducing the chance they will impact my day. I rarely lane split at speed - mostly in city traffic at the lights when all the other traffic has stopped. Your arguments about dehydration and overheating are laughable, really. How long are you riding for that you get dehydrated riding to work?
Hi Scotty, Thank you for explaining the reasons for your practice of lanesplitting- much appreciated. Just wondering, is there a reason why motorbike riders don't wear anything hiviz, like we do as cyclists...? I see so many incidents where cars just don't see bikers, and part of it seems to be that they're mostly wearing black...? (Bikes themselves are colorful but usually below eye-level, esp. in traffic). Just seems to significantly reduce the visibility profile, particularly in lower-light conditions? Many thanks...
know its a late comment but a lot hi vis actual gear is either really cheap and low quality or quite expensive from personal experience. I personally ride in very light colours with the silver reflective strips on as opposed to black. But yeah thats what Ive found in the UK.
while im on my bike, no matter the road, many drivers pull to the side, even if we are travelling at the speed limit, i dont ride up their ass, i always give them a wave, i find roundabouts the worst for people not looking or paying attention
Hi Scotty, as much as you seem like a respectful motorcycle rider, there are some riders who are complete assholes, who put not only themselves in danger but others as well. I as a car driver have seen it. Not all people who drive cars are wankers, some of us have proper road knowledge and don't always have our phones in our hands. I as a car lover, and love to drive, have seen a shit load of awful car and motorcycle drivers. So please out of respect, don't put us all under the same category. Thank you :)
I agree there are a lot of very good drivers and not all are arseholes. Did I say in this vid that a lot of drivers move over to let bikes past 👍. I also agree there are a lot of bad and inconsiderate bike riders out there 👎. If I said in the vid, and I can't remember if I did, that all drivers are out to kill you, that's because that's a thought pattern that a lot of bike riders have to ensure we stay alert and look for every danger as we are very aware how vulnerable we are. Thanks for watching and the comment. Cheers
I indicate right as I am technically overtaking the car in the left lane. BTW - It is illegal to drive with your hazard lights on unless there is a real hazard.
Hi. I use a GoPro hero 4 on the front of my helmet and a real cheapo mic off ebay out of China (a few dollars only). It is a wired mic to the GoPro. Thanks for watching. Cheers
It’s a shame you illegally use the right lane so often in this video. You could have educated people on the very important rule of keep left unless passing.
Hey Scotty, at 4:44 you were illegally lane splitting. :P Nah cool, I like your video. I'm studying up on riding in NZ traffic as I am getting another bike after about 4 years without riding... so trying to get all the habits and practical practices back in my head. Do you get paranoid of painted areas/lines in the wet? I dunno if its just me, but they seem slippery as fuck. Any key tips you could bestow onto a returning rider to remember? Cheesr
Hi. Thanks for the comment. Wet road paint used to be like ice years ago but not so bad now. I'm always very cautious of it though. Watch out for the manhole covers, they are like ice when wet. All cage drivers are out to kill you!!! Best advice.... Do some riding courses. I'm doing a Ride Forever course this summer. So cheap and so good. Take care and ride safe. Cheers
@@scottydakiwi I thought everyone was complaining that they were forced to split instead of using the unused lanes? Has that changed now? Cos that's great news

What are you riding? Looks a bit wide for Auckland. I still split but as my bikes have got bigger I do it a bit less.
It's a C90T Suzuki Boulevard with factory bags and yes it is wide hence why I am probably the slowest splitter in the country 🤣. Cheers
