If you're not worried about looks, and want to save time, add them all to a stocking and tie shut or into a wool sock and tie shut, then use it as that. Wool will act as an exfoliant while keeping soap contained :-) Cheap life hacks 101! Love your videos!
Yes, my grandmother used to use a stocking for that. Ebay is actually selling tiny pouches/tie bags made out of some exfoliating stuff, the kind of stuff the sponges are covered with for washing your back. I prefer bar soap to shower gel. It is cheaper and more natural than all those shower gels. So much crap goes in those gels, but I hate when the soap gets small. My kids often mess with the soap, they split it into pieces or make silly shapes out of it and I buy organic soaps so they are not cheap so I finally decided to find a way to rebatch them. I'm not so keen on the stocking method and I don't have the melting pot. I need to find another method.
I think I'd do this instead. I used to grab a new bar and get it wet and use it a bit because they tend to lather really really good and I use that with the old soap bars like a glue to hold the other ones together. So I'd would just heat them up and with some new soap stuff just press them together and let it dry and it work good enough for washing hands at the sink.
My teen son loves dr squatch bar soap which is $8 a bar & he’s been saving the slivers saying how cool it would be to make a bar out of them. I’m gonna try this & surprise him! Thanks
I think if people would recycle more and spend less, they would be amazed at how much they save. I have a nonstick pan with mini loaf molds that I use for baking mini bread loaves for gifts at Christmas. I use that for mold pan for my soap recycling.
It's not a matter of price ... it's that feeling that you're using something made by you (although you didn't make it from scratch). I would use this soap to wash delicate things, such as silk items, or very thin items which require hand, delicate wash. Thanks for the idea :)
ctianas just don’t use too much soap and it really only works in the hot water cycle because of the oils in soap. It’s pretty neat though to try making your own detergent
My grandma always used a sardines can as a mold: back then, lots of people knew about using a can opener sideways instead of upright, and she would do that to take the lip right off the can. Without the lip, most times she could get the soap right out without having to destroy the can.
I wish I would have seen this sooner. Somebody told me I could do it in a microwave and it did not work It was just a mess I made a video tonight epic fail. But I will be trying this method Thank you so much for sharing. Stay safe and healthy and may God bless you always!
I just put the small pieces in a plastic container, put a little water just on bottom, and put on the lid. In a couple days they are mushy on bottom. I turn them over, and do the other side. Then take them out and squish together. I use those for hand soap.
I like to recycle if I can and keep the left over soap from going to the landfill...other videos said to use silicone molds for easy release. So I think I'm going to try this. I'm a crafter, so to me it looks like fun...thanks for sharing...hugs from Arizona...:)
I used to throw away soap bars I don't like and small pieces, then I found out how many go to the landfill, millions, so I save it for hand soap and hand washing clothes.
I put my bits and pieces in a cool whip bowl. I make my own soap and every time I have a little left over from filling my molds, I pour it in the cool whip bowl of scraps. Eventually the bowl is full and I cut it into bars. It makes for some pretty interesting designs.
My mum and I did this in the 50s the home smelled so good n clean mostly Ivory then. I mostly watched and stirred a bit. I have a wealth of high end fragrance soap bar leftovers I saved for this day. Thanks so much The best method I've read over the years. I was waiting for you to post this. Thx💖💞💖
When you factor in the costs of raising, slaughtering, transportation of the animals that the soap is made from and the cooking process, we’re doing the earth a small favor by doing this. I wonder how many vegans know what their soap is made from. But that’s a different video.
Interesting. I looked this up, and your soap will contain mostly animal fat if you see "tallow" or "sodium tallowate" on ingredients list. Other kinds of fats used in soap are olive oil or other kinds of vegetable oils. Good use of animals instead of wasting them: when other parts are used to feed people or overpopulated animals starve to death.
As a disclaimer, I would also like to point out that God commanded humans to be kind to their animals. Such as Proverbs 12:10. But he never said they were the equals of humans. We live in a fallen world, and people do sin against animals as well as their fellow man. However, no longer having to kill animals or defend ourselves from them is for a future era, outside of our current realm.
This is definitely good for more expensive soap, like Mechanics Lava soap. Its not cheap. I have lots of small pieces of it, so you would definitely be saving money in that case.
That's why I started doing it, I buy natural hand made soap which is expensive and if I buy one I don't like in the shower, I use it for hand soap, not throwing it away.
I bought some soap from The San Francisco Soap Co. for like $6 a bar. Now I know how to save it for later. I also remember a friend telling me that you can fill some pantyhose with soap pieces and tie a knot in them and use it that way. All I know is that for $6 a bar I getting my moneys worth!!😉
I've done this and it's amazing. I'm gonna do it again today. The soap I use isn't cheap so you better believe I'm rebatching. Oh for the mold I use is the silicon muffin liner. Repurposing!!!
I buy expensive natural soap too but I don't do this, I just fill an empty bottle of hand soap with water and use it for hand soap, let the left over bar melt.
Put the soap in 2 ziploc bags, then the freezer. Take out next day and bash with a rolling pin. Leave in the bag, in a warm place...on a radiator.. In the sun etc. Shape in the bag or remove and mould.

hey Dr Chill, thanks for the video...just a quick comment about adding essential oils (or fractionated oil) to soap while on the heat....please check the 'flash point' of whichever scent you are using or it can combust.. traditionally fragrance is best added after the soap comes off the heat.....
Yeah, I'm thinking about doing it for Christmas next year for gifts, maybe add essential oil and wrap it pretty. Melt down a few cheap dollar store bars, and add a few things, tell everyone I made it.
@@dinarusso3320 Now that I've tried it, I have to say, never again! The soap never really does melt down, and it certainly doesn't 'reunite' well. I shall go back to sticking my leftover bits of soap onto the new bar - which also stops them being wasted. I'm glad I tried once though.
I’ve been saving all my soap pieces because I knew there was a way to recycle it. By the way. I love your fancy expensive tools and molds!! 😂 Great video! Thank you!!
I hate bar soap. But the best soaps come in bars. So, bring about 4 Cups of water to a simmer, and add in a shredded bar of soap, gradually, until melted. And now it's liquid soap. And life is good.
That box of tea you had ... would you be able to throw some of it in the batch? Or, make some tea water and use that for the bit of water used to melt it? Would that give it a nice (new) smell?

I think the entire process is unnecessary. When a bar of soap gets small I start using it for handwashing, and when it's almost too small for even that I use a new bar of soap on my next shower, and press the old one against the new bar while it's still wet, and let them dry together. The reason I'm even here because I was curious if anyone else let their bars of soap dry together like this, but the "sanding" down method seemed to waste more soap than I would save with this method looking at how much is actually clinging to that foil.
I bought some "Natural" type of soaps but I don't like how they smell or almost no smell at all, so I melt them and put some essential oils, flower leaves, put them into a mold, and now they smell good and look better :)

For " leveling out", after molding couldn't it be easier and less messy to just use a warm washcloth then when done just throw the wash cloth into the washer?
When my bath soap is thin or once it's super mushy, I just press it onto the fresh bar. Into the embossed part of the fresh bar. I press it hard enough and let it air dry for hours. I'd probably try this on my other bar soaps that does not have any embossed brand names on them. They're usually handmade soaps and it's impossible to fuse them together.
I buy natural soap too but I just fill up an empty bottle of hand soap and fill it with water and let the left over bar melt over night and use for my hands. If it was cheap soap I'd probably just throw it away.

Well it's not about being cheap, its about being recourceful and reduce the waste you leave :)
So true, less waste.
Its called recycle, not cheap 🤗
It’s about using what you pay for. Would you throw away 12% of a gallon of milk or 12% of a loaf of bread?
That’s what I was thinking 😊
The carbon emissions from the melting process cause more issues than just throwing out the scraps.

You can still find cheap soap but I can't use it, like Ivory, etc, tears up my skin, I buy expensive natural hand made soap and I just use it for hand soap if I don't care for it in the shower.
