The first time I played this was in preparation for the Blockbuster World Video Game Championships back in 93. I didn't do too well with NBA Jam but this game shot me into the lead and Clayfighter helped keep me there. Interestingly enough, my family didn't have a SNES or ANY gaming console as my parents were dead set against them so I had to practice the games at a friends house.
Another mother asked my mom "Wow, he's pretty good! How long do you let him play for?" and she sheepishly had to admit the truth, completely embarrassed that I didn't have a console yet was doing so well. After losing in the State finals my parents decided to encourage me and my siblings love for gaming and bought us a SNES for Christmas that year.
My dad has resented it ever since.
I finally bought a copy of this game last year for the SNES. After years of playing fighting games I am surprised at how unbalanced it is, but it's still a lot of fun. Great video as always!

Yeah, it's pretty bonkers how unbalanced all the versions are, honestly, but I still dig them. I mean, MvC2 is wildly unbalanced, and people love it!

It feels like the Genesis version got the less experienced and talented team of all 3 games. The sprite work, the fighting system. Seems like the only big name there was Miki Higashino to handle the badass music (And the only true reason why I own the game). Konami totally wanted the SNES version to stand out among the rest.

The vast differences between these three games have always been fascinating to me.
The Genesis one is the one I happened to grow up with, and it actually had a good bit of influence on me, it had a truly creepy vibe I wasn't used to in games as a kid, but I totally dug it. Plus, I loved the idea that someone who's basically a normal human martial artist (Karai) was more powerful than Triceraton or Krang. That really opened up my mind when it came to storytelling, also Karai's laugh when you get a Game Over against her still gives me chills

Great video! These were good fighting games, all three unique in their own right. I like the SNES version the most out of the three. The Genesis version had a cool aesthetic and a great Soundtrack, but the AI was just not fair. I haven't played the NES version much, but it was alright. We all can agree SNES game knocks it out the park. To me this is how I felt what happened. The main team worked on SNES game. Konami was desperate to cash in hard on Capcom's SFII. They chose a team on the spot to work on Genesis game but they aren't familiar with the franchise. Which is why a team more familiar with it ended up doing NES game. Sadly that console wasn't created in mind for fighting games, it is still a good attempt at that there.

The NES game is actually very good, given the console's limitations; and, that is, really, the game's only fault.
There's a few changes I would make; such as, instead of having the two buttons designated separately for punch and kick (honestly, why is this even a thing?), I would have one button used for fast-light attacks, and the other for slow-heavy attacks.
The other change I would make is to have the Turtles use their weapons as special attacks (i.e. Leo's hurricane kick could be swapped for a spinning sword slash).

Whilst I love this game, the choice of War makes zero sense.
In the archie Comic where WingNut and Ray Fillet were main protagonists, whilst Armaggon was the main antagonist villain of a major arc, the character War appeared in only two single issues of the comic.
Thats not all, War was depicted as a personality-devoid grunt in a team of three underling working for a more important villain who was himself in service of the real villain of that arc.
All things considered, Rocksteady or some other big character would've made so more sense.

That's true, but very little was changed. The biggest change is Aska's butt attack which now shows a little less butt.

Turtles are reptiles, not amphibians. That little nitpick out of the way, I knew exactly how this would turn out. The SNES version is just too good to be on the same level as the NES and Genesis ports. The NES version definitely gets a pass from me, though, because it's really the best the system could do. Joy Mech Fight and Kart Fighter (which is probably the best unlicensed game on the system) are the only other two I can think of that are worth playing. The Genesis version, on the other hand, is sad. Much like Hyperstone Heist, it feels like a half-empty effort that could have been so much better than it was. I mean, two buttons, really? I more or less don't care about it not feeling like a TMNT game, since I never was into the original cartoons (I grew up with the 2003 reboot, and didn't see much of it at that), but that aside it's just a poor effort. And it's interesting that Asuka was based off of a character from the movie, because I was almost certain she was an original character.
Also, fun fact about the SNES version: Much like Blaze in Bare Knuckle 2, Asuka's high kick was censored in the overseas version.

    • @SameNameDifferentGame
      @SameNameDifferentGame  5 ปีที่แล้ว

A handful of changes were made to Aska. Her butt attack shows a lot less butt in the US version. (Which is fine, honestly.)

@@SameNameDifferentGame I'll keep my preferences on that to myself. But aside from the butt, I don't think anything else was changed. I could be wrong though, given how NoA was back then.

@@SameNameDifferentGame I actually softened up on this game. I think it plays better than any other version. It's just that some of the backgrounds are amongst the worst pixel art to be found on the Mega Drive/Genesis. Having said that, a couple of the backgrounds are really nice. It's just I don't know why this game is so overwhelmingly dark and purple...

@@SameNameDifferentGame It feels closer in tone to the original dark comics I suppose. It just feels like they rushed it a bit. I think they needed to spend more time doing the art work and maybe add a 6 button control scheme too.
