Parent Pages in Adobe InDesign are a great way to set up your book, magazine, or multi-page design projects quickly and easily. They allow you to input page numbers, sections, styles, and more. Then access them and input them into your design. In this tutorial, Gabby from Print Design Academy will walk you through how to set up Parent Pages and implement them in your design.
Parent Pages were previously called Master Pages. Same deal, just a new name.

It's honestly such a hard balance! Designs can change in the moment so a little bit of designing on the fly, but also trying to plan and lock some stuff in. It's a process for sure.

Hi- Quick question, working on a book in InDesign. I unlocked text boxes in pages 6-7 to insert content. These pages were taking on Parent Page A settings (fonts, etc). When I later made changes to Parent Page A (font size, etc) -- pages 6-7 where I had unlocked text to insert content earlier---did not take on the new changes made in Parent Page A. If I "apply parent to ___" page, the parent overrides the content that I had placed inside the text boxes of pages 6-7. Should I have done something differently? I also tried repeating this process and locking (CTRL + L) the text boxes in pages 6-7 after inserting content into them, and then making changes to Parent Page A, but nothing worked. Would love some guidance. Thanks so much.

Hey there! When you unlock your content it takes it out of that "same on every page" concept. The Parent Pages aren't about styling and more about objects that stay in the same place. So overriding will replace all your items on the page to match the parent. The best practice for large documents like books is to be using Paragraph and Character Styles which determine font sizes, color, spacing, all the thingssss. They work on parent pages and regular pages. Then when you go into those stylings and change anything, it'll update everywhere. Hope that helps.

When deleting a Parent Page, I assumed it would delete the applied elements of the pages where that Parent was applied. However, I've run into situations when I delete the Parent Page and the elements stay on the page....making me go page by page to delete the elements individually. What did I do wrong? It seems that once you Override the Parent Page, it unlocks those elements...but how do you lock them again so that later on they will be deleted if you decide to delete the Parent Page. Does any of this make sense? LOL.
Makes total sense! Ya, when you unlock the elements on a page they act as if they were there the whole time. There isn't a link after you release them from the parent page. The best thing is to try and work in your parent page as much as possible and if you have a few different design needs, create a few different parent pages but keep them locked. Unfortunately no real way to "re-lock" the elements after.
