I can almost imagine the speech he gave to his son before this rite of passage:
"The world outside loves it meat, but it hasn't the first clue where it's meat comes from. They process it in giant factories hidden away in the countryside, were immigrants making less than livable wage break their backs butchering animals who've been force fed to the point of organ failure. They put an air gun between their eyes and they pull the trigger. They barely have time to register the animal's fear before they move on to the next one, but believe me, they can still smell the shit. In the factory, that smell is everywhere and pervades everything. That part, at least, they cannot avoid. They take the meat, they inject dye and preservatives into it, and then they wrap it in plastic and ship it out to the supermarkets. So much of it that often they can't even sell it all and have to throw it out. The people who buy it never have to smell the shit or look into the eyes of animals who gave them their next meal. To them, those two pounds of pink chuck may as well have appeared by magic.
That is not how I want you to go through life, never questioning where it all comes from: the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the water you drink. The whole world is connected, and what you take from it will not go unnoticed. You want meat? You can have it. But first I would have you look your meat in the eye and feel the life drain from its body. I would have you understand just how much that piece of flesh in your hand is actually worth, what it took to get it there.

We honestly don't need to eat animals anymore. We can and people enjoy, but it's mostly unnecessary. I say this as someone who has eaten meat my entire life. It's just that I'm acknowledging more and more over time that fruits, grains, vegetables, beans and nuts are nutrient dense, are excellent sources of fiber, and have almost everything a human needs to feel satisfied and be healthy. I am naturally muscular so I really enjoy a good source of protein like steak, but have found myself just as satisfied with a bowel of lentils. I think eventually the only going to keep on eating is fish because I've just always loved
Seafood and the majority of my diet is just gonna end up being vegetarian.

THAT was hardcore! Not even with a bow, just with a knife. And of course, the deer died quicker and less painful than with a bow. Because its difficult to kill instanbly with a bow.

A good arrow head kills plenty fast enough. I can honor my kills just fine. Besides, even our ancient ancestors weren't stupid enough to jump on wild animals & cut their throats with stone knives. They used long, sharp spears, & then bows once they discovered them.

Hunting today is an unsustainable, romanticized idea by the privileged, who desire cleaner meat, or who wish to simply roleplay hunter for fun. It isn't necessary at all. This is such indoctrination into hunting, while beans, nuts, seeds, grains, fruits, and vegetables are far better, especially since they contain fiber, and on average, 16x more nutrients, and 64x more antioxidants. Plants have always been the practical sustenance, requiring far, far less land, no matter the picturesque propaganda you may have in mind. Hunting = luxury. Plants = serious survival.
Yes, I get it, our ancestors hunted to survive *at certain times and places* throughout history. And factory farms are gross. And I'm sure you breathe in the essence of your victims very respectfully and seriously after taking them from their families. I get it. Indoctrination. Doesn't change the fact it's an unnecessary abuse to the animal now, even if we are training to survive in the wilderness. It's unrealistic. Buy a book on foraging and gardening, and learn not to live off the backs of others. Just because something has been a tradition, or is comparatively better, doesn't make it right. Look at slavery for example, and ask yourself if you can really respect a victim of rape, no matter how gentle you are to the victim. And please don't compare yourself to some wild predator. An intelligent species knows its options and is willing to adapt.
I can't take Captain Fantastic very seriously, even if it's not his or the director's fault.

Mercymurv it’s a fucking movie m8 get over it. And no our ancestors hunted game frequently, as it was there only source of protein and iron. You literally compared hunting to slavery and rape. What the hell is wrong with you.

What a ridiculous comment. The only reason you can even string together those words is because humans developed their frontal cortex by killing, cooking, and consuming animals.

Bad movie. If they are going to show skinning the deer at least make the scene somewhat correct. Unwatchable.
