What impressed me the most about this video is that you are including your son in the experience and what he is learning about raising worms. Memories that will last a lifetime. Quality time.💟
No kidding. It seems like most of the comments in other videos are of grown people talking about what their parents is grandparents right them about catching and working with worms when they were kids. They seem very fond of those memories.
I have had one of these going for several years, our old chest freeze was repurposed, now I have 2 on the go. After the one is full I make a second batch, and move the complex one onto our raised beds. I use alfalfa pellets and peat moss mix, for the base , or even used a bale of hay, I mounted a 2" valve on the drain, let the original hay/peat soak for several days, then drained into a large 400gallon tote, and filled with water to use as a watering tea, then let the alfalfa compost usually takes a week + and when heat is gone dump grocery store veggie scraps, Starbucks coffee waste. and bump some of my soil on it, and if needed a few handfuls of worms from bin. My 0.5 organic matter Arizona desert soils are alive with worms, cover crops, wood chips, manure, alfalfa hay, pellet plant wastes. And neighbors get to benefit from my food forest. It sure is better than watching Fox News getting mad at the blame for food prices, get to share and bring cheer and good tasting food to neighbors. Let's ask what can I do for America, not what Gov can do for me. Cheers.
My parents gave us their deep freeze when they sold there house and went to work on the road. I’ve had it for 5 years and it’s finally gone. In the time I’ve had it we’ve built a house, had a third kid, and started a homestead. I’m going to be composting scraps, yard debri, and rabbit poop with worms in this freezer. Over 20 years and it’s still serving our family and helping us keep food on the table when things get tough.
Had mine since my three teenage children had stomachs like bottomless pits. That was 16 years ago. Remember Crisco? I loved it❤, as it done everything for me. I F##king hate shopping.
@@jojozepofthejungle2655my freezer is 22 years old, has been through 4 sons, the closing of Sears where I bought it, Hurricane Irene 5 feet of water, Hurricane Sandy and a couple of light flooding of the basement! She’s been a fighter when needed. Wow your comment got me to thinking about my old Beckie! Wow thank you for that
Thanks for this just acquired 1 of these today and will be building a hydro dip tank out of it. You are the only person on youtube converting a standing freezer instead of a chest. Gave me a starting point.
I’m glad it helped you. It will be real easy to make one water tight. You could completely line it with thin plexiglass and silicone if you needed too.
Don’t forget to put a lock on the freezer. In Florida the law says you have to remove the door of throw away refrigerator and freezers because kids can climb in. My grandmother put a paddle lock on her freezer so I couldn’t climb in and get stuck.
Growing up in Florida an old refrigerator is one of the most used items for a worm bed that and a bathtub. Refrigerators were good because they kept out the 100 degree weather.
I was hoping it would help keep out the harsh weather. That is the only reason I haven’t had an outdoor bed yet. It rarely gets over 100 here in Kentucky but we do get several upper 90 days in the middle of summer and it gets down to the single digits some during winter. I’m excited to see how they do in it.
My granny currently has both in her backyard. I'm watching this to see how I can better streamline and consolidate her beds so she doesn't have so much up keep. She's 88 and I told her I'll help keep her hobbies going but we gotta get more efficient.
Hello from my northwest Florida homestead. I was looking for videos on repurposing my chest freezer that quit working. I have vermicomposted on a small scale before and that was the first thing I thought about to repurpose the chest freezer. My second choice is to use it as a large ice chest, my third choice is possibly a root cellar, but not really sold on that idea, and I also saw some people using theirs as a raised bed but not sure about that one either.
Great video, thank you. I hope you and your family are well! I am also wondering like the people above me of an update. I randomly found your video and it's quite interesting. I have an old freezer that I would like to try with. Please when you are able, update us on the success or even mishaps, I would like to learn as much as possible.
I shared with a group if your in a cold area, you could save the internal wiring for the defrost cycle and provide moderate heating for below zero and not freeze. A real simple timer or thermostat could easily operate it.
If you juice the food scraps and add the juice to cardboard with rain water and add the food pulp from the juicing process to the damp cardboard, and coffee grinds and tea leaves, ground banana, it helps speed up the process.
You could use plastic canavas same way as hardware cloth. I have some so that would work. People get them in craft stores as they make tissue boxes or ornaments out of plastic canvas etc etc. They have different sizes, too. I cut circle ones and put them on top of my shaker in my kitchen.
If you farm black soldier flies eggs, larvae, and maggots, their compost, compost tea, they will help your compost and also collect it for sale. If you sell the worm eggs etc. Both species will give you a decent income if sold in the right place
tip for future if you hole saw a 3inch hole in a piece of wood you can lay it on top of your mesh and hole saw your circles out using the wood as a guide instead of a pilot bit
I stripped an old fridge in less than 3 minutes with a torch and about $5 worth of propane/oxygen. I even burned the holes with the torch. Just keep a jar of water to quench the fires from the insulation.
Have you tried putting coco coir at the bottom and separate with a weed cloth, or burlap? Then add the worm grow medium on top. I have not done this but will do it today in a 17 gallon worm bin.
How would the worms do in the heat? It’s 100° quite regularly here in the South. I could put bins in an out building that would keep direct sun off the bins and maybe a little cooler, but not much. We’re go too much to try swapping out ice jugs. I need a set it and forget it system that can handle idle periods.
As long as it stays in the shade it should do pretty good in hot weather. If the outdoor temperature stays 100 for several days though it will heat up the bin no matter how good it is insulated. I would partially burry the bin in a shaded location if our summers got crazy hot. That will use the earths consistent cool temperature to help regulate the bin during the harsh weather.
Here in AZ I feed them cooked compost-manure and/or coffee grounds, crashed eggshells, woodchips. Always under shade and sometimes I even throw some ice-cubes over top.
As the worms have no teeth they need grit either oyster shells or egg shells to digest their food The recommend with egg shells you should microwave them for a little while to kill off any salmonella You need a small separate bowl of water putting in the microwave with the egg shells to save damaging the microwave
Muhammad Salman I think it would keep them safe without the holes! Once you make those air holes you're losing your insulation and letting the cold in! And how much cold depends on how many and how big you make the holes!
I would say with a little extra care they would do fine in -45 for a period of time. My thoughts for this winter even though it only gets to the lower teens and sometimes single digits here is to put gallon jugs filled with hot water in the bed a couple times a day or if you don’t care to use a little electricity you could put a reptile heat mat on top of the bedding during the harsh weather to give them a safe haven to flock too. Adding extra food to get the bed hot composting would help to but it isn’t consistent. -45 is crazy cold though. 🥶
Much appreciated. Subscribed. Do you recommend using heating pad during winter or will it do fine as is? I live in Ocala Florida zone 9a. We drop to 25 degrees sometimes. Your knowledge appreciated
Be Careful when setting up a worm bin like this. I went from 4 - 28 Gal totes that I did well in to a freezer like this. Hoping to increase out put and have less work. I'm not sure where I went wrong but the freezer bin built the way they show all looked good. I set up the freezer bin like I would a 28 Gal tote proportionally for the size. The freezer bin ended up getting way to hot and killed about 2 thousand worms. I would like to see a play by play youtube video on how this works in the 80 to 90 degree temps. The 28 Gal totes never got to hot! Any Ideas?
Hi, great idea! Unfortunately, I do not understand English! can you tell me what kind of white powder that was? Approximately how many worms did you put in the box? Thank you in advance for your answer!

Put wheels under it. Or a frame with wheels. You can drive it inside to protect it from the winter.
If you have a source of 110V power, you can incorporate 2' x 4' seedling heat mats. This size is typically 100 watts.
There's an old freezer in the shed of the old cottage I just purchased...this is what I plan to do with it.

More ventilation usually helps. Your bedding might be a little to damp to causing condensation on the lid.

I thought same, too. I only started one small bin last week in my house.
How did the freezer worm bin turn out kinda sad that is the last video on this channel 1 year ago
It turned out good. Not as easy to maintain as the tote bins though. I had a lot of trouble with heat in it this last summer.

No update on this?
I would have made the mesh circles, square. it would have been easier to cut.
I just received 500 red wigglers and 500 European night crawlers how long before I can harvest the worm castings
bigger is for less work. build smaller if you need to run out of room for worms quicker.
