A Little RAV4, A Little Highlander And A Lot Of Corolla = The 2022 Corolla Cross

  • The Corolla turns out to be one of the most versatile nameplates in history. It's been around forever, there have been sedans, hatches, liftbacks, coupes, and wagons. There have been boring Corollas, cute Corollas, ugly Corollas, diesel Corollas, hybrid Corollas, and sports Corollas. So why not a crossover Corolla? That's Toyota's logic to bring the Corolla nameplate into the 21st century, and I'm kind of OK with that. Although the interior is a scale model of the Corolla sedan and hatch, Toyota absolutely nailed the exterior design by mixing a little RAV and a little Highlander into this subcompact CUV.

I doubt it will be that much Horsepower, because it will want to save fuel because of North America strict standards. It will have Prius system with over 121 hP. But if you know Toyota's Hybrid system, they have plenty of power because it uses two motors powered with the hybrid system, so there will be alot of torque. Carries the torch of the Corolla name fairly well I'd say. The driving performance is boring, but that's not why you're buying this - it's because you absolutely, positively need a daily that will go 100k+ miles before you ever have to worry about long term maintenance issues. If the money matters to you, then this vehicle is on the short list. AWD (or really good snow tires) is a must if you live in a place where winter is a thing.

Toyota is very smart. They are putting their highest/most sales car and slowly converting it into a SUV/CUV class category so that in the future when the sedan car categories are dead or almost dead or even when the sales slumps then their Corolla SUV/CUV still remains and have already had a strong foothold in it. They are targeting all the customers in their mind, if you want a sedan here is a Toyota Corolla sedan and if you want a SUV/CUV then here's this too.

I suspect this will sell like hotcakes in Canada assuming the price is right. Canadians are more price sensitive since cars are usually 20% more expensive due to currency exchange. Corollas are more popular than Camrys, as are Civics vs Accords compared to the US. These CUVs are the hottest selling segment too and if the AWD add-on is reasonable, it's going to be a hit.

I loved that he concentrated mainly on the LE, which will probably be the volume seller, with a bit of info on the other trims. It's refreshing seeing anything but a fully loaded model.
However, what's also noteworthy is how little price spread there is from the base L up to the XLE, just around $4k, plus more if you want AWD. That's a huge bargain given how much content is added.
I'd definitely get an XLE, if for no better reason that the silver trim cuts down the apparent size of the grille. The oversize schnozz is the only really ugly part of this model. The interior I could definitely live with, and that generous cargo space is super.

This car has every safety feature I believe in existence. the car looks and is much bigger than the corolla sedan. it looks like a RAV4 from the front and similar to many other sun's from the rear. Its 8.1 inch ground clearance gives it a bigger stance and a higher seating position. Handling is extremely good especially on curves and the noise level is much lower than expected. I work for a dealer, which cut out employee discounts due to ver few cars, so I paid full price, without some of the ridiculous add ons that some of them do. $30,050. Used RAV4 AWD are going for $40k so i opted for the Cross and am very glad I did. this car should sell very well, if they can get the chips to go in them. I am a sedan driver and usually prefer sedans, but this might be the first crossover that I'd be fully interested in. Back when I bought my '17 Camry I also test drove a C-HR and wasn't impressed at all with it (performance/styling/etc) so if Toyota wants to introduce something that seems more like a Corolla in a crossover form then I'm in, especially with a hybrid. When they introduce the hybrid it'll probably be about the time I look for my next Toyota anyway.

Toyota is wise to stick with the Corolla formula. It's worked for them for decades. I personally find it a bit boring, but it obviously sells well. Hope they at least offer options for interior colors other than boring grey/black. And too bad they didn't design out that piece of the dash that protrudes into the door opening. It's a knee bash hazard. Wouldn't it be nice if Alex showed us the rear cargo area with the seats down so we could see how practical it would be as a cargo carrier? Is it flat, does the hatch shape and size allow loading of large items? Most buyers don't put people or roller bags in the rear of our cars, so we'd rather see what can fit in there from places like Home Depot, Ikea, etc. I'm sure journalists visit airports frequently and fill the rear with roller bags, but that's probably the exception.

It's a step forward in so many ways, though it looks like Toyota took a step backwards by making a combined brake/turn signal, even though it looks like it has the provision for a separate amber turn signal (probably does in other markets). Maybe when they do a mid-cycle refresh, they'll go back to that style. At least the LEDs for the brake/turn signal are brighter than incandescent bulbs.

Nice for 30k. This would definitely be my favorite new vehicle. But, I'd rather get a used Volvo V50 and pocket 25k. These are tough times. So that's what I did. I really think expensive new cars are a very American thing. In Europe, the Middle East and South America, people buy used cars. But with gas prices here, and the Illuminati's economic covid reset, it's a good time to buy used. My friend just paid 30k for an almost new RV which comes with a car, and a huge house on wheels.

So many vehicles with all this black plastic wheel moldings, also along the bottom and front and rear bumpers. Looks OK on this Corola Cross but in a no go for me on the Mazda CX30 which has way to wide wheel moldings. Guess they save money doing this vs metal and paint which I prefer. I have a 2019 Highland and it looks good, but I do keep up with coating the plastic with UV protectant products. The CX5 looks a lot better than the CX30 but does cost more. I'm going to be helping my daughter with a car early next year and it will probably be a Corolla Cross LE or XLE or a base model Mazda CX5 which does come with a lot standard. I just caught that now all SUV/cross over Mazda's come standard with AWD. I guess to help steal sales from Subaru. My only concern Alex is this 2.0 motor enough power to deal with busy suburbia traffic??

I would definitely buy corolla cross in this segment

    • @markmiller3279
      @markmiller3279 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yup. It's not a very impressive segment. The Kona is nice, but getting dated. The Kia Seltos is better, and may be the best current alternative. The lifted hatchback aspect puts me off the CrossTrek. It doesn't have the packaging advantages of a CUV, the main reason for getting one over a hatchback. We'll see whether the HR-V has been improved enough, as the old one had a feeble powertrain, weird styling, and a cheapish interior. It's only plus was the massive cargo space and clever rear seat. The Corolla Cross feels far more premium for similar money. The Kia Soul is homely and cheap-feeling, if well packaged, and the Venue is just plain cheap, without being cheap enough. The Nissan Kicks has questionable Nissan reliability, but looks like decent value as nobody would pay list for it. The Mazda CX-3 is old and cramped. The American brand options are all unimpressive.
This looks like the best mainstream subcompact UV (SCUV?). The Kia Seltos gets honorable mention, and maybe the Kona because it comes in so many variants.

The hybrid is going to be the version to get for sure. If Toyota bumps the horsepower to 185 with at least a 5 mpg improvement in the hybrid then this thing is going to fly off the dealer lots.

    • @markmiller3279

@@markmiller3279 I am hoping for that but then I thought about what Toyota would probably do if this got better mpg than a Rav4 Hybrid or Venza. But I'm sure you are correct, it's logical. I guess Toyota would give the Corolla Cross better mpg at a huge expense to performance.

I'm cross-shopping this vehicle with the Kia Seltos and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. They all have their pros/cons. The Toyota is the most powerful. The Kia is the most efficient. The Toyota will likely be the most reliable, but it also has the shortest warranty by a huge margin. The Toyota has better resale value, but the Kia and Mitsubishi can typically be bought for a lot less money with bigger manufacturer rebates. Tough decision.
