I watched Togo and Balto and I love them both. Togo is more grounded in reality while Balto is more kid friendly. I would like to add that I hated that both dogs weren't even shown in each other's movies but they were mentioned so that's a plus

He didn't make it back on the ice, he threw Togo into the water to swim ashore and pull the team back 3. Several dogs died of burst lungs, meaning they ran themselves to death. I love that you made this video! I didn't know Baltos team was sold off and treated bad 😞
Those dogs were all heros. Dogs are so in tune with their handlers and I am sure they all sensed that this was a more important trip than they had ever undertaken before. They may not have understood the concept of disease and medicine, but they could all tell their handlers were more anxious and being more reckless than normal.
I can imagine the Behind-the-scenes story of the Togo film. A Disney executive wanted to make a Balto live-action remake, just to be told that Balto wasn't a Disney film to begin with.
My great grandma was one of the children being saved and she loved to tell me about the dogs, especially as she got to see them at the parade. When I saw the movie I remember how great granny said that it's very inaccurate and she was sad that Togo didn't get any kind of praise but the movie gave me a nice representation of what happened. Nowadays I like to watch it for nostalgia and still cry, even if it's not what happened. I love you great granny

Yeah I think his name was Fritz but I’m not too sure. I read a book on Togo a while ago so I can’t remember but I think his name was Fritz. It was part of a series called Dog Diaries that covers lots of famous dogs accurately

Both dogs were extraordinary. I have sympathy for Baltic tho considering after he wasn’t seen as “useful” he was sold for a quick buck. Togo earned the life he was given when he retired, and rightfully so. RIP to two national treasures.🐕🐺🐶❤️
My childhood best friend and I were OBSESSED with balto. We are from the Cleveland area and LOVED that exhibit as kids. I have a photo of us on the Cleveland zoo's balto statue's back somewhere
I'm 37 now. My 11 yo daughter and I have watched all 3 movies together several times. The story still hits my heart. But Thank You Jon for shedding light on the true story. Now we know that those men and dogs were real heros.
The emotion, the raw style, the originality...so many feels!!! I don't care how inaccurate the film Balto is. It's still an unforgettable gem for its heart alone damnit.
Togo actually got a statue put up in a New York park within the past few years. Much smaller, but someone was consciously trying to correct that mistake

I saw the Balto statue in Central Park. It definitely brought up a lot of nostalgia from the opening of the movie. It's just so tragic that some of those hero dogs were sent to a freak show. They deserved the life that Togo got.

I loved the movie until I read a book on Togo which turned the movie almost toxic to me from inaccuracies. You really do be ugly crying during Togo. I watched it when it was first released and as soon as is showed flashback I knew I would spend most of the movie crying and I did.
This is like a firefighter going into a burning house to find a missing person, carrying them back to the window through smoke and fire, handing them off to someone at the window who carries them down the ladder, and crediting the one who carried them down the ladder.
I read this book called "Togo" it's his life and about the serum run. It's written by Kate Kilimo. Totally recommend it. It's super short but really good.
Because it's TH-cam they only care about money anything that doesn't look like money isn't nothing, if it can make money then it's worthy of recommendation

I always knew Balto wasn't accurate (though reality is stranger than fiction), but I loved the message about overcoming being an outcast and accomplishing something important. And all the cute dog characters of course :3

Omg I screamed I love this story Togo and Balto are the reason I wanted huskies. Balto has a sad past after the sirum run. Togo is under rated because he was like 13. I'm so happy even though I haven't watched this video yet.
Jon didn't touch on how horribly Balto and the other dogs were treated. They were tied to a sled in a dimly lit room for months where they were neglected and reportedly even abused. George Kimble raised $2,000 the price for the dog's freedom. It was a big deal in Cleveland with even school children working to raise the funds. There has always been a little dispute about sending Balto's remains back to Alaska but he belongs to Cleveland they were the ones who truly valued him and gave him a peaceful retirement.

For messed up murders Jon should do Jonbenét Ramsey. Today in class we watched part of a documentary about her, and it was the first time anyone in class had heard about her. I had only ever seen pictures of her in magazines but never really knew who she was. I’m really curious to know who Jon thinks the murderer(s) is/are. Just a thought.
I always knew that not everything was true in the movie but I still love Balto. Even though the sequels sucks. But it's interesting to know the true story. Heart goes out to all those brave men and dogs who saved all those people back then.
I went through a Balto faze when I was a kid, still love the movie even though it isn’t accurate at all. When I watched a documentary about what actually happened I was heartbroken to see what happened to Balto after the race. Although I’m glad to see Togo and his master lived long happy lives.

Togo and Balto were not the only dogs there and there is no singular hero. No one dog is more heroic than the other. i went to see call of the wild having never read the book and sobbed so hard. I cried the entire 30 minute drive home, too. expected it to be a fun movie about harrison ford and a dog. wrecked me.
I know it's goofy but I teared up several times watching this. First when the nostalgia hit from seeing the clips of the cartoon movie from the childhood, and again hearing about the selflessness of the brave mushers who risked their lives to do what needed to be done. The dogs were absolutely amazing too, my favorite animals on earth are dogs. Nothing on earth compares to the loyalty of a dog.
Thanks again, Jon, for bringing us the story behind the story we've heard. I've heard this story about 3 or4 times before, but never from someone who researched and divulged it in such detail. And I so appreciate the your attention to what happened to two of the "important" dogs after the run. Thank you once again for a story behind the story rendition!
I don't know about everyone else, but in my opinion, all the dogs and the mushers are heroes! I hope that the person back then took down notes on everyone's dog's names and the musher's names too. They should all be remembered for their bravery. I certainly cannot image driving through -79.8° F (-62° C) freezing condition to get to the destination. Jon, please make another episode explaining/giving us more details into back what happened afterwards. Thanks!
I'm from Alaska originally and grew up hearing these stories, even went to the races. It makes me so happy to know that it earned its place here and that people are truly interested. Great job!
What an excellent nutshell history! Thank you! Leonhard was my maternal grandfather's first cousin, and my parents knew him, although I never got the chance. Togo was always his pride and joy -- the best of the best. He also raised and trained Balto, although he didn't think he was as reliable as Togo.
I live near Cleveland and have been to the museum dozens of times and Balto has always been my favorite to see and he is very well loved and praised here.
The story of Togo is taught here in my home state of Alaska as part of our Alaska History classes. I still love the Balto movie but its funny to see peoples reactions when they find out Balto was not the hero.

I watched Balto as a child and I loved it and thought it was so under-rated. It wasn't until recently that I actually watched Togo and realized the details that were omitted and how many people and dogs worked together to save the children of Noom, AK. It was an amazing story and a true definition of a journey.

As someone who's been to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, yes, all that's true and there's a nice section for Balto there.
They also have a statue of him near the wolf exhibit at the Cleveland Zoo.

Freaking loved this movie as a kid!!!! As I got older I learned the full story about Togo and Balto, yet I still hold the movie close in my heart
You explaining it almost brought a tear to my eye as I realised how fricking wholesome this is!! Men that could have minded their own business and choose not to risk their LIVES for random strangers tackled this feat. As a _team_ who have never met... what a story!
I always knew Balto wasn't accurate (though reality is stranger than fiction), but I loved the message about overcoming being an outcast and accomplishing something important.

I got so excited when I saw Balto in the title. I Love that Movie!!
Jon didn't touch on how horribly Balto and the other dogs were treated. They were tied to a sled in a dimly lit room for months where they were neglected and reportedly even abused. George Kimble raised $2,000 the price for the dog's freedom. It was a big deal in Cleveland with even school children working to raise the funds. There has always been a little dispute about sending Balto's remains back to Alaska but he belongs to Cleveland they were the ones who truly valued him and gave him a peaceful retirement.
When you automatically like it in the beginning and then watch it.. And think to yourself wow that was a good video ima like it and realize you already did haha
For messed up murders Jon should do Jonbenét Ramsey. Today in class we watched part of a documentary about her, and it was the first time anyone in class had heard about her. I had only ever seen pictures of her in magazines but never really knew who she was. I’m really curious to know who Jon thinks the murderer(s) is/are. Just a thought.

I always knew that not everything was true in the movie but I still love Balto. Even though the sequels sucks. But it's interesting to know the true story. Heart goes out to all those brave men and dogs who saved all those people back then.
I went through a Balto faze when I was a kid, still love the movie even though it isn’t accurate at all. When I watched a documentary about what actually happened I was heartbroken to see what happened to Balto after the race. Although I’m glad to see Togo and his master lived long happy lives.

But the reason why Togo is a bit more the hero then Balto is bc Togo was already to old and he never suppose to be a sled dog bc he was to small to be one. But he proved himself to be a real sled dog so that’s why he was one. (Srry bad English)
@@LadySamurai88 I feel like attributing the hero title to just one dog is very insulting to every single dog and musher than ran that relay. Togo and Balto were not the only dogs there and there is no singular hero. No one dog is more heroic than the other. They all did their jobs as they were suppose to and saved lives and all deserve equal recognition.

Even though Balto was initially given the heros welcome, it was really Togo who got the better end of the stick as you mentioned Togo living the rest of his days with his owner and giving birth to a line of sled dogs
Regardless of what people say both the Balto and Togo films are pure gold in my eyes

i went to see call of the wild having never read the book and sobbed so hard. I cried the entire 30 minute drive home, too. expected it to be a fun movie about harrison ford and a dog. wrecked me.
I know it's goofy but I teared up several times watching this. First when the nostalgia hit from seeing the clips of the cartoon movie from the childhood, and again hearing about the selflessness of the brave mushers who risked their lives to do what needed to be done. The dogs were absolutely amazing too, my favorite animals on earth are dogs. Nothing on earth compares to the loyalty of a dog.
It’s the perfect note to end on and one we all need to follow

I don't know about everyone else, but in my opinion, all the dogs and the mushers are heroes! I hope that the person back then took down notes on everyone's dog's names and the musher's names too. They should all be remembered for their bravery. I certainly cannot image driving through -79.8° F (-62° C) freezing condition to get to the destination. Jon, please make another episode explaining/giving us more details into back what happened afterwards. Thanks!

I'm from Alaska originally and grew up hearing these stories, even went to the races. It makes me so happy to know that it earned its place here and that people are truly interested. Great job!
What an excellent nutshell history! Thank you! Leonhard was my maternal grandfather's first cousin, and my parents knew him, although I never got the chance. Togo was always his pride and joy -- the best of the best. He also raised and trained Balto, although he didn't think he was as reliable as Togo.
Such amazing heroes. Can't imagine how difficult it was to complete this task.
I live near Cleveland and have been to the museum dozens of times and Balto has always been my favorite to see and he is very well loved and praised here.
The story of Togo is taught here in my home state of Alaska as part of our Alaska History classes. I still love the Balto movie but its funny to see peoples reactions when they find out Balto was not the hero.

We went to New York on a Central Park tour, and I was so upset we couldn't go see the statue. I know the movie is extremely inaccurate, but the animation stole my heart and I still adore it to this day. Cool video!

Balto was a childhood tearjerker. But watching this more accurate version and I was still crying my eyes out. 😭 all the riders and dogs deserve more.

I watched Balto as a child and I loved it and thought it was so under-rated. It wasn't until recently that I actually watched Togo and realized the details that were omitted and how many people and dogs worked together to save the children of Noom, AK. It was an amazing story and a true definition of a journey.
Togo did something absolutely extraordinary, Such a hero ❤️ and so is the other sled dogs for making that run possible 👏 amazing
