This is an excellent point - I have only recently realized that I have become addicted to all of these "success", "motivational" type videos that are all over TH-cam. The problem is the algorithm. Just by watching this video there are at least 10 similar "success" videos on the right side of this page. I feel as if I have accomplished something by watching this video, I get a dopamine rush and then hey... why not watch a related video? And then I watch that video and another suggested video shows up. Next thing you know I've spent an hour getting pumped up and have accomplished nothing LOL.
But I have made changes as little as a month ago. I started a new system by creating a list of ACTIONABLE GOALS - nothing goes on this list except actions that could yield a real result in the real world. I highly recommend everyone try it. It works!
Someone could start a TH-cam channel based on ONLY action and forget all the other stuff that's out there making everyone procrastinate.

Such an important reminder! SO often the plans change as soon as the doing begins anyhow. Thanks for the extra push. It's nice to know I am not alone in feeling this one. I think I have been erring on the side too much thinking and not enough action...I like the idea of 90:10.

    Hi Chase,
Awesome video as usual! On the flip side of this, often times feeling stuck can be 'just' a feeling. It's difficult to measure wether you're really stuck or not. We can easily become impatient and use the feeling of being stuck as an excuse to not put in the consistent work. Repetition is the mother of all skill. When we put in the consistent work, we're bound to make progress over time. And sometimes taking some time off can give us new ideas or perspectives. However, when we're feeling stuck, typically we should ignore that feeling, don't overthink, and keep putting in the consistent work.

Thanks Chase for the straight talk. It's a good reminder, and motivator to stay in action. I know you won't mind if I say that when you say 'ideas are cheap, a dime a dozen, and worthless if they are in you head and not made into something' that I have heard that line before. I know you didn't make that one up. I want to question that line, and how it's been said out in the world, not just by you. While it has a kernel of truth, I don't think it's helpful for everyone. By minimizing the value of ideas, and saying they're worthless until they are done, that amplifies perfectionism and fear for some people. I think it feeds shame. I believe the intention is to encourage people who need to get out of their head and get into action - I'm one of those people- I need to be reminded to do that. But I don't think the times I've heard it said that way have contributed to me getting into action, but made me feel shameful for all the ideas I haven't tried or finished. There's a great book called What Do You Do With an Idea, and it basically puts forth that you need to embrace and welcome your idea. When I hear that my ideas are a dime a dozen or worthless until realized, it just makes me want to hide more.

It's always good to re-fill your creative well, at least weekly (reading, watching, walks lol). But also note that, the only thing that matters is the DOING, as you can plan yourself out of what your want to do or create. Some fears and anxiety may begin to creep in. So, plan because that is a way of outlining your NEXT STEP, not what's going to happen in the future, or results/where you want the project to go, just FOCUS on your NEXT MOVE. TODAY. Right Now.
You have no idea how happy you'll be when you're doing that which you know you're capable of, but was afraid to start, only to think, what was I so apprehensive about.
Try to do, daily, Like everything from diet to practising mindfulness, it becomes a habit. A natural do-er.
(I'm currently reading/Listening The Daily Show (The Book), An Oral History as Told by Jon Stewart by author Chris Smith, so check it out!)

Hi Chase! I am a Speed Painter from the UK, and I get so much inspiration and useful knowledge from watching 'Chase Jarvis Raw' And 'Creative Live' . To be honest, I don't get to speak to many other artist or creatives these days, As Im locked away in my studio in a small town, and I travel alone to events that I perform at!..So, It really helps to listen for hours to creative entrepreneurs who always steer me in the right direction and inspire me to keep pushing forward with my Art and allow myself to be venerable when business just aint going right! Thank you for providing me with so much advice about improving all the little things to further my creativity and lifestyle, and I would like to also add, that this video in particular has spoke to me perfectly after a tough week of Over planning, and not DOING!..I hope one day our creative paths meet in person. Thank you. DS

Good advice. Got similar advice years ago from Gifford Pinchot at the MBA school he started (after a bit of planning). His mantra was along the lines of faster doing beats longer planning. He was speaking in terms of entrepreneurship. The underlying premise of this was that reality will have a lot of impact on your finely polished business plan. You can't plan for every eventuality and even if you do, the world you are working in will change and you need to be able to adapt. If you are good at "doing" you will be better at adapting.

Word. I love doing online photog courses and listening to photog podcasts and coming up with ideas, etc. But sometimes (like now) I feel brimming with that planning and that 'how'... and just so ready to go and 'do'. Your vid is a nice affirmation of that need to go and do (the 90/10 ratio is right on). Ps. prefer these chilled out talkies sometimes to the flash bangs. Thanks Chase.

I love it. Ive been thinking through much of the same thing lately. I put a video out a week ago talking about Done being better than perfect, and how perfection tends to bring with it paralysis and overly excessive planning. Action is the seed that will sprout to growth and progression. Also no need for an apology about the lack of graphics and such, it wouldn't be Chase Jarvis RAW if there wasn't a RAWness to it. Thanks for the video chase - you (and others i.e. Bernadette Jiwa) say to be "different" not better. I heard about "blue ocean strategy" on one of your creative-live courses, so i bought the book and still... don't have any fantastic ideas about differentiation for my photography (largely due to market saturation) - couple this with an obsessive desire to do photography as my career... and be "successful"
Question is - do you have any thoughts on how to work out difference, differentiation, blue ocean strategy for creatives - or is this just a cause of "stop analyzing - keep doing, and work out the kinks as you go".
Nobody ever wants to talk about the volume of small business failures, we are inundated with success stories and "best of" so im trying to be "smart" about my approach (or else im in analysis paralysis!).

I have a different opinion about this planning.
Planning helps to get shit done, if you do it right and dont overload youre agenda.
Lets say you have a shit load of stuff to do and looking at this list alone will make you procastinate or will make you pushing them further away. By planning all the stuff to do away in your agenda you will notice that the emotional side that is blocking you from starting doing shit will ease up.
Once you have a date atleast for all the stuff you need to do, you can easily start doing. And its okay to shift things according to situation. Things can take longer than expected because nobody is perfect.
Key factor is though, you need to start doing ones planned. I aggree that planning has no benefit to the actual doing side and you lose time when making it, but on the long run it will help to keep you sane, see overall process and kind of reflection of how well you estimate youre time wich in turn will give you better judgement of estimation of how long stuff wil take.

I agree with the sentiment. And would be great to hear a story from your personal experience. But I think you're confusing brainstorming/inspiration/learning and planning/strategy. white-boarding and watching youtube videos are the former, and not planning. a plan would be a document with specific tasks and schedule to complete a project, at the very least a basic outline (brainstorming/learning might be part of the plan but for a set time). that way you, or those you're working with, understand what needs to be done to complete a project or achieve a goal. otherwise you waste time figuring out what to do next or you don't move forward because you don't know what to do. a good plan structure should be refined over time, and eventually become second nature, allowing you (and the team) to focus on getting things done and less time figuring it out as you go along. Hope that's constructive. Thanks for the great content!

    • @jayober
      @jayober 7 ปีที่แล้ว

thanks kelsey. in my reply to you below, what i'm trying to communicate is draw a distinction between planning and open-ended discussion. these two are often confused. proper planning includes a clear objective and desired outcome(s) and then determining the tasks that support the objective and lead to the desired outcome. and should be clear who is doing what and by when. and the plan should be flexible such that over time if something is discovered the plan can be modified as needed. this is especially important when working with other people so we're all on the same page.

Hey Devin, I've watched a lot of your TH-cam films. Sinds december 2016
I have a Canon 750D wit a 18-55 kit lens. Rode mic Pro for audio.
Mefoto Globetrotter aluminium tripod. Now trying to transform information I know into knowledge.
Went into Utrecht City, The Netherlands and started filming and later creating my own film in Magix
    video de luxe 2013. th-cam.com/video/c5Vo05KRnus/w-d-xo.html
In Video Deluxe it looks sharp, in the Windows media player
film it looks a bit les sharp, on TH-cam it's realy not so sharp
    annymore. Do you know why?
I'm new in shooting RAW film. White
balans and getting good colors is just trying out stuff. Do you think
Video De luxe 2013 is till a good program? There are 14 kinds of film
formats to select when i start with creating a film. I select the one
    below.
    NTSC FullHD 60p 16:9 (1920x1080; 59,94fps)
Hope you can give some thoughts of the next step to make sharp films for TH-cam with good colors. Feels like a long way to go.
