One big reason for his anger is most likely his betrayal from Lucy. In the end of the prequel, he feels Lucy betrayed him and played him for a fool. He believes Katniss is playing Peeta (specifically when he sees her kiss Gale), and he remembers his jealousy toward Lucy and Billy. He is reminded of how Lucy betrayed him. I think that is one of the biggest reasons he is angry over Katniss lying about being in love with Peeta. Also, Snow’s remark “oh, they are holding hands. I want them dead,” symbolizes his contempt for love. After he was betrayed by Lucy, he stated that he wanted to marry someone he didn’t love because love had made him blind.

    @c.w.simpsonproductions1230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4055

So, I finally read A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. And for me, it changes so much about Snow in the original trilogy:
I don't think Snow ever truly got over Lucy Gray Baird. No one ever forgets their first love, and he was never able to resolve his feelings towards her since their relationship ended so... violently. He just pushed those feelings deep down. And then, 64 years later, came the 74th Hunger Games. And Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12.
It probably started off small, noticing her during the Reaping. The way she made a loud first impression at the Reaping, just like Lucy had done so long ago. And Snow continued to see more and more of Lucy Gray in Katniss as that Hunger Games proceeded: Her unique clothing choices, becoming a darling of the Capital, Peeta’s love for her and determination to keep her alive, just like Snow’s own determination to save Lucy as her mentor. Snow probably saw his younger self in Peeta.
But a key moment for Snow was likely watching Katniss sing the Valley song to a dying Rue, the same song that he had heard Lucy sing in the meadow so long ago. All those dormant memories came bubbling forth, reminding him of the “weak” man he used to be and the girl he had loved. And then Katniss and Peeta managed to win the games, making Katniss the first female District 12 victor since Lucy Gray. And Katniss did it through stretching and breaking the rules, going to a similar extreme that he had done so long ago, dropping that handkerchief into the snake tank to save Lucy's life. And just like how cheating to save Lucy's life caused his life to take a tailspin by being thrown out of the Academy and forced to enlist in the Peacekeepers, Katniss had caused unrest and chaos to take place, putting Snow's position in jeopardy once again and threatening the very same power that he had sacrificed Lucy, Sejanus, and so many others to achieve.
I think by that point, Snow took all those feelings he had over Lucy and turned them on Katniss. In her, in Katniss, he saw the ghost of the girl he thought himself free of so long ago, and all those unresolved feelings he had for Lucy developed into an obsession with Katniss. A desire to regain control, both over Panem and her. Snow desired power and control more than anything, and Lucy defied him so long ago. To Snow, he was seeing a mirror of Lucy Gray in Katniss. A girl who Katniss was a parallel of in so many ways. A District 12 girl. A victor. A survivor.
When he came to see Katniss in District 12, it was likely the very first time he had set foot in District 12 since that day in the woods by the lake, when his paranoia and self-preservation consumed him. He must have been swamped with memories.
Imagine how he must have felt when Katniss was dubbed The Mockingjay, after the birds he loathed so much, the same ones Lucy had loved and sang to. Snow was already irritated by the pin, this was just a step further. Perhaps the reason he firebombed District 12 wasn’t just to punish Katniss, but to eradicate his past, another act of revenge against "the ghost of District 12". To do as Kylo Ren famously said "let the past die" and burn those memories away.
When he heard Katniss sing The Hanging Tree in that propaganda piece, that song would have stung deeply for him, bringing about painful memories of love and betrayal. Memories of the tree, the man screaming for his love to run, Sejanus's screams for his mother, Lucy Gray singing it for him at the party, meeting Lucy Gray beneath the tree. The song she sang to him, the last words she ever spoke to him. It turned into a blind obsession that he wanted to kill at any cost.
And after the smoke had settled and the war had ended, perhaps he mulled on Lucy Gray during his time imprisoned. About her, their time together. The man he used to be and the man he had become. About how he lived his life. What was the point? About the life he could have lived. About how he chose power and control over love and true friendship. Did he regret it? Did he wish that he had stayed with Lucy Gray, confessed the truth about Sejanus to her and begged for forgiveness? Perhaps, but he would never admit it. He did what he thought was right to preserve humanity and society. But when Katniss came to see him, he remembered Lucy Gray. When he apologized to Katniss for Prim, perhaps he was also apologizing to Lucy Gray for everything he did to her.
Perhaps it was spite, perhaps a determination about not letting Coin enjoy a victory. And perhaps it was an attempt to make things right. He remembered what she had said about freedom and happiness, about not having to take another life. Whatever it was, he turned Katniss onto the danger Coin posed. And in that moment, he let Katniss, and by extension Lucy Gray, go.
    And then came the execution:
As he stared down that bow, was his life flashing before his eyes?Perhaps he was seeing not just Katniss, but Lucy Gray as well. Remembering every moment, from watching her in the reaping to that day in the forest. And then she killed Coin. With the firing of a bow, the Hunger Games were gone once and for all. And in that moment, he watched Katniss let him go, something which he had never been able to do with Lucy.
Knowing that his words to Katniss made a difference, he managed to honor Lucy Gray's wish. He laughed, smiled and felt genuine happiness for the first time since Lucy Gray, a final moment of euphoria before his final end. And that was how the ballad of Lucy and Snow ended.
Truly fitting. In the end: a District 12 girl brought about Snow’s rise, and a District 12 girl brought about his fall.

I genuinely think Snow doesn't get half as much credit as a villain as he should. This man has done so many countless horrible acts in the name of saving and keeping Panem the way its supposed to and gave such a realistic response from a gov against a revolution. The "there is no district 12" still gives me goosebumps, taking Peeta away and torturing him instead of killing, stopping Katniss at every turn, trafficking Finnik and giving him a "player" image, poisoning all of his rivals, throwing them all into the games again and so many other little games inside of the overarching one is so chilling. The worst is how he always remains calm and collected despite it all is what made him so truly unnerving because there's almost nothing he won't do to get what he believes Panem needs. A truly underrated villan

I think his speech to Katniss both sums up his villainy but also why he's not as rated compared to others as he is so good at coming across as a reasonable (!) Man as well.
We both know I'm not above killing children, but I'm not wasteful! I take life for specific reasons.
I mean that right there encapsulated Snows villainy but also weirdly to himself and maybe others it's a hint that he sees it as doing good. As explored in TBOSAS guided by Dr Gaul, a little bit of death to keep the greater peace is seen as necessary. I'm NOT saying it's right or that I agree merely that the motivation is coming from a twisted ideal that it's better to have some killing to keep the population in line than a full scale rebellion or war. Where many more will (and do die)
      These things happen in War.
Additionally, he does use his final moments to address the future. He may have lost control and it may just be bitter that Coin outsmarted him but I don't think so.
I am not wasteful. Everyone could see the game was up at that point.
I truly believe Snow who has witnessed his worst nightmare, what he'd dedicated his life and his murders to preventing - a war again in his lifetime - and didn't want it to go to waste. If the rebellion was to truly succeed there was no purpose to simply replacing him with another tyrant in Coin.
She intends to take my place.
Snow in his own way was a patriot. He felt he was doing his best for the people in his.own twisted way. Even at the last he did what he felt was best for Panem, and ensured the next dictator was killed before they could get started.
That's what makes him fascinating and thus hidden as a true villain for some, as he is way more complex and hard to say, from a rounded perspective he is a pure villain in that sense. We can understand his motivations even if we don't agree with them. He definitely fits the every villain is the hero of their story trope. In many ways at the end he is. He helped Katniss to save Panem one final time. To avoid the mistake of allowing Coin to become Panem's ruler.

You didn't get it, did you ? That experience traumatised him. He realized how in the end we are all parasites who need someone to give us food and resources in return of loyalty (or at least superficial loyalty). That's why he sees the other Districts as underdogs. They remind him of his former self, and he doesn't want to be part of the working parasites. He wants to be part of the exploiting parasites, but for, that, he needs to earn that position, which means, he needs to act like the other exploiting parasites in order to be part of them.
Not to mention that, his desperation never lead him to destroy everything around him, which is why he sees the poor as wasteful underdogs that would rather destroy society instead of just focusing in earning their own rewards, or something similar.

I absolutely love his character. President Snow emanates such a lawful, calculated evil. And yet, you can respect him and his efforts as a statesman simultaneously. Like (the actor) Donald Sutherland says, Snow does not think of himself as a bad person. He is just running his totalitarian state with efficiency, grace, decorum and palpable fear!
    *My favorite lines from him:*
_"Would you like to be in a real war?"_
_"Tell me... at what point did he realize the depth of your indifference towards him."_
_"Show them what it costs to be friends with Katniss Everdeen."_
_"I told you what a fragile thing peace was. And still, like a child, you took pleasure in breaking it."_
_"Ms. Everdeen, it's the things we love most... that destroy us. I want you to remember... that I said that. Don't you think I know your friends and in the tribute center?"_
_"If the Mockingjay were gone, the rebels would already be using her as a martyr."_
_"Lure them into the city, and then our game-makers will make them pay for every inch with blood... We'll turn their advance into a celebration of suffering."_
_"We toasted a glorious era coming to its bitter end."_
_"Make no mistake, they are not coming to liberate us. They are coming to destroy our way of life. They are coming to bury us."_
_"That's a nice one, the colors are lovely of course, but nothing says perfection like white."_
_"I wanted to tell you how very sorry I am about your sister. So wasteful. So unnecessary. Anyone could see the game was over by that point. In fact I was just about issue an official surrender when they released those parachutes... You really think I gave the order? We both know I'm not above killing children, but I'm not wasteful. I take life for specific reasons, and there was no reason for me to destroy a pen full of Capitol children. None at all."_
*And of course, the best for last:*
_"I must concede, it was a masterful move on Coin's part. The idea that I was bombing our own helpless children to hold back the rebels. It turned the last of my guards against me. There was no resistance left inside the Capitol or the mansion. Do you know it aired live? There's a particular savvy in that, isn't there? I'm sure she wasn't gunning for your sister, but... these things happen in war. My failure was in being so slow to grasp Coin's plan. She let the Capitol and the Districts destroy one another, then she stepped in to take power with 13's arsenal. Oh, make no mistake, she intends to take my place now. But... I've been watching you. And you watching me. I'm afraid we've both been played for fools... Oh, my dear Miss Everdeen. I thought we'd agreed never to lie to each other."_

President Snow is one of the most delightfully complex villains in young adult fiction. He’s ruthless and cunning, running Panem with an iron fist and a sharp mind. He has no qualms killing children, but even he has his standards. He’s not needlessly bloodthirsty, only killing if he needs to.
And most importantly, he keeps his word. He told Katniss he wouldn’t lie to her. True enough, he never did. Even when dying, he took the time to warn her that Coin was dangerous.

“I take life for specific reasons” hits a lot harder after reading the ballad of songbirds and snakes

After having watched the prequel I can say that his biggest flaw that ultimately always leads to his downside is his paranoia and need for control.

When you realize he only has three minutes of screen time in the first movie.

After seeing the movie songbirds and snakes some of these scenes cannot be viewed the same way anymore.

omgggg watching this after reading TBOSAS adds so much more to his character. He is 10x more terrifying and things make so much more sense now.
Especially when he says “it’s the things we love most that destroy us.”

In my opinion, he isnt terrifying anymore. Now you can understand his actions and his hate against the districts. After he had heared Katniss singing the hanging tree, a very strong reminder of his love to Lucy, his heart broke again. I feel sorry for him. Love destroyed him and his entirer life.

Now that I know about Snow’s backstory, it’s interesting to analyse these scenes

The last scene of him laughing with blood running out of his mouth is perfect.
