Casca's one of the many people in this series who's story ends in tragedy. History will always him as a monster. His only legacy being that he was the man who created the Hunger Games. when in truth he never wanted the hunger games to happen and wanted nothing more than for them to end.

That's what's so sad about Highbottom: he resented Coriolanus for what his father Crassus did: submitting the blatantly hyperbolic idea to Gaul and making it disturbingly real. Had he maybe try to lure him in the right direction in a supporting way rather than trying to break him down, maybe he could've stopped him from becoming the megalomaniac we knew Snow to be. By the time Highbottom finally revealed the truth, it was the day Snow killed him.

I really liked the character of Casca Highbottom
Even if it was unfair from him to make Coriolanus paid for what his father did to him (the treason about the Hunger Games), Hightbottom is far more compassionnate and moral than people who live in The Capitol. Those enjoy the Hunger Games and see it like a good show where tributes are deshumanized whereas Highbottom feels so guilty about tributes's death that he became addicted to drug. He has a good heart

I love that last scene so much. All through the film, he tried to undermine and defeat Snow, stop him from rising high like his father had done. Then when he failed to stop him, he tries to hurt Snow by attacking his heart. He should have realised by then that narcissists and sociopaths are incapable of love.

Does anyone else feel like Casca’s situation mirrors Gale and the bombing of Prim? Both characters made a proposal. Just an idea they threw out, but neither were necessarily responsible for putting it into motion. However, they are still indirectly responsible for what happened and all the deaths since it was their ideas in the first place. It’s sad though. Especially for Highbottom who had to live with the guilt that all those children are dying every year because of him. Maybe I shouldn’t feel sympathy for him but I can’t help it

I believe the majority of responsibility for the Hunger Games´ creation goes to Dr. Volumnia Gaul, who prescribed an assignment to her students on what kinds of punishment to inflict on your enemies in the first place... As well as Crassus Snow, who got Casca Highbottom drunk, and used his "drunken, purely hypothetical" ideas to write down the basics for what would become the Hunger Games, AND handed it in with both of their names on to Dr. Gaul, despite having promised Highbottom, his "best friend" not to do so. Hm, I kinda see a male-Snow cross generational pattern here about betraying your "best friend", and being involved in lies around assignments to Dr. Gaul... Unfortunately for Highbottom, he was on the butt end of both at once when it comes to the older Snow, but it didn´t end in his death, but almost something far worse: being named the official creator of The Hunger Games for everyone to know, when he had only done an assignment with his best friend... No wonder he started to hate the Snows so much, and turned to morphling to cope with the guilt and other emotions. Point is, I really don´t think he would have thought up, and nevermind suggested, The Hunger Games as a "Peace offering" to the Districts and the Rebels, after the Dark Days and the War unguided, unstimulated, sober, alert and conscious of mind. It looks to me like Dr. Gaul and the President of that time were looking for some way to remind the districts of their place, so capitols could go back to being blissfully ignorant, shallow, spoiled, privileged, untouchable, pampered First Class citizens again. So, she basically had her students brainstorming on how to break people and the masses. Highbottom just happened to have come up with her favorite idea to implement for that purpose. With a good dose of help from Crassus Snow, his leading questions and alcohol. The president and The Evil First Head Gamemaker were the ones to actually make them happen, and Gaul, being the sadist that she is, is shown to love them, going so far as taking steps to change The Games more into a perfermance show, when the viewings rates were low due to the sheer grotesqueness and brutality of the Games. Nevermind adopting Coriolanus as an assistant Gamemaker after seing his potential, at the end of TBoSaS. While Casca Highbottom is a highly flawed character, it is hard not to feel a little bit sorry for him at least. Not all legacies are worth a name in the history books.

The thing I liked most about Casca Highbottom, is that despite knowing who Snow becomes in the end, the movie does a great job of convincing you that Snow is the good guy, and Highbottom the bad guy for standing in Snow’s way…
Then we get to the third act, we watch as Snow slowly drifts down the path of darkness, until finally we get Highbottom’s final scene, and it’s revealed that he never wanted to create the Hunger Games, it was merely a drunken joke… that turned into a horrid nightmare that claimed the lives of 1701 children and traumatising 75
(For anyone curious about the math, 24 tributes per year, 74 Hunger Games in which Catniss and Peeta are the victors of the 74th, so 24x74=1776 participants, then subtract 75 victors, one from each Game except the last which has two victors, so it’s 1776-75=1701. I didn’t count the 75th as that’s the Quarter Quell, and I wouldn’t call anyone in that one a child, but feel free to add numbers on if you’d like.)
The movie painted Snow as the Protagonist… but somewhere along the way, it made us forget he was also the Villain.
It painted Casca Highbottom as the Antagonist… but unbeknownst to all… he was the Anti-Hero, all along, trying desperately to end the games, and the nightmare he inadvertently created.
(Also, quick aside, that number was bugging me for some reason, so I looked it up, 1776, is the YEAR, in which the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, was adopted by the original 13 States, HOLY FACKING CHRIST 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱)

Question: How responsbile do you think Casca was for the Games beginning? He made the proposal never expecting it to be used, and it seems as thought once Gaul discovered the idea and gave it to the President it was out of his hands. Still, he never resigned as Dean. And constantly acting unenthusiastic about the Games is NOT the same as opposing them outright

I feel like he truly did oppose and tried to end the games originally, but by the time they came around to the 10th installment he just sort of gave up and why he became so dependent on morphing to cope with the guilt. And I don’t think resigning as Dean of the academy, which is separate from the games themselves, would have been necessary to exonerate him of his role or interest in them existing in the first place.

      He explained at the end
His beef was really with Snow’s father
      When they were both students
Highbottem wrote his idea of the Hunger Games as a school assignment
He wrote it as a joke and while he was drunk, and instantly regretted it when he sobered up
Snow’s father stole his paper and handed it in to Dr. Gaul, with his own name on it, to steal some credit
Gaul implemented the idea of the HungeR Games, and Highbottem felt guilty every year for the blood that’s on his hands
He hated Snow for being his father’s son, the man who made his own legacy that of murder
Highbottem had to dope himself in morphine to cope
He did everything to try to end the games and Snow worked to make sure they’ll continue
It was a mixture of pettiness but also seeing how Snow was a threat to make the Hunger Games continue and tried to stop him

    • @sigriddaaemland8486
      @sigriddaaemland8486 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I think Highbottom´s character kind of mirrors that of Severus Snape´s from the Harry Potter series. Both were adult men who hated a young man/boy's war glorified dead father (understandably I might add) so passionately, that that hatred spilled over to their innocent, orphan sons. The main difference in the two cases, at least for me, is that Harry was utterly appalled at finding out that his father and Godfather used to be horrible bullies towards Snape (this is made way more clear in the book), and for all his flaws, Harry is a good person when it comes down to it. Coriolanus on the other hand is arguably even more cruel, cold, selfish, entitled, power-hungry and prejudiced than his father, and works tirelessly to make the Hunger Games what they were by Katniss´ time. He was totally unbothered by the news of his fathers involvement in creating The Hunger Games and betraying his "best friend".
